You're leading the "so near yet so far" competition! That's a bit of a bummer for you. I know how you felt at the end, but it hit me a good bit earlier, so I knew I wasn't going to do it with quite a few miles still to go. Having said that, I did rally a bit once I got back onto the Highway, knowing it was an easy run in to the finish with no cobbles.

  • Quick race report from me (copied from the daily training thread, sorry!): went out well, slightly fast in miles 3 and 4, but it's downhill so that was fine. Heart rate was bang on target at about 169, all very good. Hit a bit of a rough spot at 12 - 14 miles, but was really helped by seeing Drew in front of me. Got to within about 15 metre of him, then realised that trying to catch him was foolish. A few miles later he disappeared, clearly had a good run.

Hit 20 miles in 2:13:50 (plan was 2:15) feeling pretty good. From that point on my legs started to tire - everything else was great, fully fuelled so no danger of the wall, just slowed a bit. Bit of cardiac drift here, but only by 2 or 3 beats so happy with that. Maintained the pace pretty well (although mile 25 was pretty slow), and finished feeling great and extremely happy! 2:58:10, absolutely brilliant :-)

Splits are below for the interest, HRM was being a bit glitchy so missed a bunch of laps.

Saw Monique yesterday afternoon, she had to drop out sadly due to her foot problem. Hope you get it fixed soon, Mon!

Congrats to everyone, great results all round, even those who missed the target. The hot weather out there was rather unexpected, and certainly unwelcome. Special congrats to Mango for nipping in there - that must have been a bit worrying in the last few miles!

Just popped in to see how you all got on and say well done!

Monique, great to meet you at long last, but so sorry your foot didn't allow you to carry on. Hope it's not too serious and you're back to full strength soon!
  • Congratulations to everyone, especially those now in the club. Rest of us will have to fight another day...
Thoughts on cramping, I have never suffered like I did yesterday on any training run, so why yesterday? Yes I drank more than usual before, but not that much, it was hotter, but not that hot, I ate more, ...hum, maybe a pattern here, so next time I might try and treat the whole thing more like a long training run and not over cook everything. Anyone know any good Autumn marathon to try?

  • Hilly, thanks. I see you had a great one. Congrats.
Monique, hope your foot recovers soon.
Bluerunner, I'm sure there are a few! One I can personally recommend is the Lochness marathon in October. Not too big a field. A bit undulating so that's to be borne in mind PB-wise, but fantastic scenery. Very friendly and a great atmosphere.
  • Bluerunner, I have the same question as you, I've overcome exhaustion before to get home in a decent time but I've never experienced cramp like I did yesterday. My theory is that although it was not baking hot, the heat was completely unexpected (to me anyway) and I drank too much, possibly leading to salt deficits. That, combined with my poor race strategy, led to the problems. I'm still very stiff today and can barely climb stairs, whereas in training I was regularly following a 20-miler with a run the next day.
  • And Dublin is a good autumn marathon, although they've changed the route since I did it.
  • Bad luck to those who missed out, but there is always another..... Last year I ran 3:27 at London and then 2:59 at Berlin in September. Anyone considering a shot at sub 3 in the autumn MUST consider this one. It's dead flat, the atmosphere and orgainisation is as good as London (maybe even better), plus Ryanair will fly you there for 30 quid! What more can I say? Oh yes, there is the small matter of all the free chocolate and beer you can eat once you have finished!!!

    Great start, 7:20 1st mile, then 6:30-6:50s.
68 at 10, 2:17 at 20, perfect till hamstring cramps in both legs. Had to stop and stretch on at least 6 occasions.
But even though 3:07 is 4 mins outside my PB, this was my best effort. Its the first time I have got to 20 and known I had a good chance of breaking 3.
Masseur said the problems I had all stem from my back. Need to get to grips with strengthening my lower back.
Congrats to all of you, but specially those who hit their target time. Those who didn't - analyse what went wrong and, theres always another chance.

Suspect my cramps and dizziness may have been partly due to running through each shower, the cold water shocking the muscles and impairing sweating, as well of course a poor race strategy (started too slow) and not drinking enough water.

Next sub 3 attempt 'Cardiff in October' nice and flat with a finish in the millennium Stadium.

  • Just adding myself to the list - well done everyone, some really impressive times here. No sub-3 for me, but really pleased with a 3:05 on my first outing, my legs still feel absolutely shafted ...

  • Batfink - was that you I grumbled to about our Fartlekking pacer at around 6-8 miles, and then at the finish ? I was in the Children with Leukaemia vest (sure that really helps !)
  • OuchOuch - I'm planning on doing Cardiff half. No more marathons for me this year, but I'd love to have a crack at sub 80 at Cardiff. Very very flat apparently, and the finish in the Millennium Stadium would be cool
  • Crater
I know what you look like from the back! I was just behind you in the run-in. If you overtook a Dulwich Runner in the last couple of miles, that was me.
  • RB - nice to put a face to name ... that last couple of miles was just determination - legs shot to pieces and totally running on empty. Not helped by the guy in the Heart outfit sprinting by me effortlessly looking like he was running a 10k !
  • Crater
He did rather zoom past but he did get me on telly tho'. Just after he had overtaken me, they picked him out and Steve Cram mentioned him. I can just be seen running behind him, but only from the neck down!

I was dying too, but I saved a bit for a spint up the Mall so I'd look good on the finish photo! Haven't seen it yet tho'

Great run in FLM - well done. My plan was the half at Cardiff, but I was also planning a sub 3 hr in London, so its the Cardiff Marathon and third time lucky for me.

The finish in the Mill Stad is really something - although as a Cardiffian I am biased. You must be in with a great chance now of sub-80 - Good Luck and see you on the Cardiff thread.

  • Looks like a Cardiff sub 3 thread may be useful too - I'm also considering Berlin, but I'd like to take the extra month to work on my 1 mile and 5km speed.
  • I'd love to join you in the "2006 FLM Sub 3" forum, but sadly it's dawning on me that age and weight has finally caught up with me!

Doubt VERY much I'd get a place in next years FLM without running a qualifying time later this year... and with a doctors appointment tomorrow, and all comments regarding my knee pain - it's looking like cartilage and an arthroscopy...

I recall late last week someone on the forum saying some folk just aren't built to run marathons (i.e. at a decent pace - sub 3) - I contested it - dontcha just hate it when you put your foot firmly in your mouth!!!
