  • I know what you mean - I can't even cycle at the momentimage My husband keeps going 'secret running' - bless him!

I was also at peak fitness and had just run a half marathon which will qualify me for an entry into the London Marathon on a championship time. I guess it's when you are fit like that that something gives. I run 10Ks and half marathons but would love to do a marathon and even an ultra, which my husband does. Last year I did half of an utra and just ran 32 miles as a training run with him! Basically, I'll have a go at anything but am stronger over middle distance.

I too am missing it horrenously. We have a 10K organised by the club on Monday evening and I'm helping out with that. it's good to keep in touch with my running buddies but I wish I was running with them.

I got quite upset at work yesterday as my job as a teacher keeps me constantly on my feet and I just don't think my feet are getting chance to heal. I spoke to my head and said we're going to have to look at opportunities to try and minimise me having to walk around. The thing is, if you have broken your leg then a pot is very visual and people are sympathetic. My feet look fine though and are not even swollen so I just sound like I'm moaning.

Typically my feet are much much better today so hopefully I am finally on the mend. Fingers crossed! image

  • Wow - just looked up championship time and that's impressive!  I'd be 5 mins behind you in a half marathon,  I wonder if all the interval sessions I did for my marathon training (plus the high - for me - mileage of 50/week) has tipped me over into this injury.  Maybe I can only tolerate more 'plodding' type running!

Must be tough seeing your hubby go running, especially those long distances.  Mine is more into golf but does the occassional run to keep fit - I get grumpy with him if he does at the moment.  I'm not sure I could live with an ultra-runner whilst I'm injured....

Sympathise with you being on your feet all day.  Do you think staying off them is the key to beating this?  I feel like I need to exercise them a bit to increase the blood flow and enhance the chances of healing.  To be honest though I've not sen any marked improvement throguh resting, but I suppose no deterioration either.

Today I went to the gym and read a running mag whilst on the cross trainer.  Reading about some trail races I'd love to do if and when I'm better!

So now just waiting for my next appt.  Got physio this week, then two weeks til specialist appt when I might finally get my scan.  It's my b'day tomorrow and all I want is a mended foot!!!!!

    Hope you're still feeling good.

  • evening all,

saw my doc today with my p.f and she said to try the gel heel pads (got some, v expensive, but if they work at least they should last a while!) and ibu gel (d'oh!) and had never heard of the strap thing i've ready about, which holds the foot more at right angles whilst asleep, to keep a gentle tension - cant remember the name now.

that well-known pharmacy chain shoes had the heel pads but had never heard of the strap device either - i must google, cos now i'm wondering if i dreamt it?

i wore the pads today from 10am to 7pm, which included 35 mins walking home, and i THINK i felt less pain, so, with tomorrow being 'day off' i have no NEED to walk, and will see how it feels after that.

i never would have believed a) how much i miss running, and b) how painful p.f. is.

hope we all get better soon! and it is such a lovely evening here!

  • Got my appointment with the Podiartist tomorrow-apparently a muscular skeletal appointment. My feet are as bad as ever and I'm feeling very low. I can't imagine a day without pain at the moment never mind running again. How dud they get this bad when I have tried to be sensible and rest???
  • Sarah - my GP was not a lot of use with PF but with persitance referred me to the muscular skeletal clinic (now waiting a long 3 weeks until the appt!).  There def is a strap thing but I don't have one as my feet are fine first thing, bizarrely.

Beth - you'll get there I;m sure as it sounds like you're doing the right things.  I hope the appt tomorrow helps you, do report back please!

Today I chatted to someone from my running club who had PF a few years back but at the weekend did a 37 mile run (and also runs sub 3 hr marathons)....so there's hope for us.

Physio for me today and all not too bad.  Am seeing her next week too and she wants me to try a little run before the next appt.  Am scared to try though!

  • i dont want to become obsessed with the condition of my foot (or other bits which tell me how old they are!) but today . . .  .

    it did seem . . .

    a little easier!

however - i have walked for only 15 mins (wearing my running trainers) and rest of time have been pottering at home shoeless, mostly sitting, sometimes with foot up - cant do THAT many days out of a week even if it DOES heal the heel!

if it feels ok tomorrow (i'm on leave this week) i will try a short trot on thurs.

  • Sarah - how long have you had PF?

  • about 6 weeks, could be more.

i THINK i got it thru walking funny due to favouring right leg after falling off bicycle!

  • no, its more like 8 or 9 weeks

  • About the same as me (in terms of time  - mine was def induced by running 600 miles in 15 weeks.....!!!).

  • Hi all. Diagnosis was posterior tibial tendonitus which was not really a surprise. The pod said it would most likely be strained and inflamed as it would be very unlucky to be torn in both legs! Going to pay fit a scan so that I know hit sure. The good news is that he has given me the go ahead for riding the bike which I had told recently not to do, and also that I should wear small heels! Yippee! I don't think this is a kinder injury than PF but ateast I know now.

WW I have heard if lots of people recovering from PF; it just seems like it is taking forever. I keep telling myself that in the grand scheme if things, this time is just a drop in the ocean. I was told I wouldn't be running again any time soon image
  • yeah wonder woman, i'd guess an average of 40 miles a week would give you a strain! lol!

i'm tentatively positive, and wil try a trot early next week.

  • Beth it's good you've got a diagnosis, if it's correct how long to recover? At least you can enjoy some biking now.

I tried aqua jogging today, really enjoyed it but probably because I was with a friend and we jogged up and down and chatted!

Am tentatively thinking of a 1.5 mile jog at the weekend to see how I get on.
  • sounds a safe bet, good luck

  • OMG for some reason I have not been getting updates on this thread so I have just dropped in and am horrified to see just like myself many of you are still suffering.Several of you mention the fear of getting fat and unfit and as much as I have tried to avoid it I am heading down that road rapidly.Because swimming involves getting into the car ,driving to the pool etc etc and it seems the kids are invariably on school holidays and the pool is busy its difficult to motivate myself to go.Like some of you I have mainly gravitated to using one of my bikes but because you need to ride some distance to get the same benefit as running that too is not  very motivational either. And like someone said its ghouling when you are riding out somewhere to see a runner clearly enjoying them selves. It must have been weeks ago now when I even attempted to run and because it was such a disaster and I pulled my calf muscle I am literally frightened to attempt to run again. When I read examples of runners returning after resting their injury I am envious because in my experience even that does not work. However since coming back on here and writing this up its been useful because it has made me want to yet again give it another go.So guess what tomorrow come rain or shine I am going to give it ago.

Having been informed by a Pod that I do not require orthotics I will just have to make sure that I fully stretch before I set off though.

  • How did you get on Ted - did you run?

I am terrified of trying a 1.5 mile jog tomorrow !!  Crazy when in April I was running 50 miles a week....

  • Ted! I was hoping that you were were better! Sorry to hear that like us you are still suffering. Try to keep positive; there will come a point that we get better - it just takes a heck of a lot of time and patience. I'm trying to think of it as 'character building'! If you haven't even attempted a run for a while then this might be the one! I'm still waiting for 7 days pain or discomfort free before I try. I managed 5 days on two occasions but then it comes back with avengence! I'm lucky if I get one day at the moment! Good luck with your runs everyone - hope they go positively. Ps. How is your pain on a day-to-day basis? Beth
  • Well I did my 1.5 mile jog today - not terrible but def a little soreness.  Unbelievable after so long that it hasn't healed.  Pinning my hopes on seeing specialist in a week's time when I hope I might get referred for a scan to see what is ACTUALLY going on in my foot.....

  • hello all ive been lurking on this thread as i have a bad case of PF. pretty much tried everything that you guys have already tried but I m still running twqice a week but onlyon soft ground and up to about 4 miles.

I've got a pedi roller which helps and am constantly stretching and icing. i see an osteopath which really helps and she thinks it linked to my achillies heel which used to cause me no end of problems. I am also trying to change my running style so I'm more of a mid foor striker than a heel striker and I have to say I have seen improvements ..well its kept me running. I cycle and swim as I hoping to do a triathlon next year and as I'm a hopeless swimmer I'm putting my energies into that.

I had PF years ago and had some custom orthotices made which sorted it, this time its proving to be more stubbon.

seriously thinking about cortisone injections as well as its done the trick for some people...depends how brave/desperate I get.

Beth, i alsways have a degree of discomfort during the day but alot of this depends on what shoes I'm wearing..fit flops seem to be ok but aren't always suitable for work. most of my pain is in my heel and not under the arch at all...grrrrrrr!!

  • WW how are you today? Has your foot any better? I trailed round meadowgall all day, cycling and then to a party so my feet were pretty tired and a bit sore by then end of the day!

ET7 - welcome to the group! It sounds like you are managing to do just enough to contain your condition. How long have you been suffering this time? It's difficult to know whether to keep running a little as you have done or stop altogether like me. I don't seem much better for not running but who knows, I may have been much worse if I'd carried on.

I've heard mixed reviews about fit flops - some people swear by them but others say that as they would ale you stabilise yourself they can be worse.

I guess I need to move threads now I have been diagnosed with PTT but they sound pretty similar ands are both an absolute nightmare to get rid of!

How are you Sarah and Ted? I'm going pool running now image

    Beth
  • Hi all - well my foot feels a lot better today, but then I did take 400mg of Ibuprofen last night so maybe that's taken the imflammation down.  I did pool running yesterday too - really enjoy it but only been with a friend and we chat so far.....can imagine v. boring on your own??

ET7 great to hear any advice you have.... and particularly good you can still run.  Most of my pain is in the heel too, right at the back 'corner' where you first hit the ground with it on a heel strike.  I also wear fitflops at home, have found them really good.  Then any shoes with my orthotics in when I go out which is not great.  Have been naughty and worn heel for some work meetings as just don;t think I'd feel smart/the same without them.

If my foot continues ok today I may try another 1.5 mile jog on Monday - only because I have the physio on tues and she wanted me to try so she could pinpoint the problem area a bit better.  I don't feel like I'm doing a lot of damage by this little running to be honest as resting it for 3 months doesn't seem to have been any more help!!!

Beth do pop back in here as would love to hear how you get on.  What is the treatment for PTT and how long have you been told to stay off running?

On verge of signing up for a sprint triathlon in Sept...hoping 5k run may be possible by then, or is that just wishful thinking??????

  • morning all,

hi beth w, thanks for asking - not too bad,

i think there MAY be some improvement following three full days doing nothing and using gel pads for next three days when out walking (antiques fairs and car boots - rough stony ground, grass), but its improvement only in the lessening of intensity of the pain.

i have a short 1.5 mile walk to work and back today and a rest day tomorrow, so if i wake up feeling better i'll try a run/walk.

hi wonder woman - i'm sure with your determination, a min of 8 weeks to your sept tri will be long enough, good luck.

i dont use the 'fit-flops' but i have worn easy-tone trainers for walking (when dry) since last year and personally i'm sure they have helped get my leg muscles toned up. i like them and found them comfortable (prior to this latest saga)

  • Hi all

I've had PF for about 3mths and to be honest I've found not doing anything of much help really. Went on holiday during half term and hardly did anything but the pain was still there.

I think a sprint tri is a good thing to focus in as it gives you something to motivate you which is what I have done. Whilst I'm having a break from any serious running, I'm trying to use the time to improve my cycling and swimming techniques.

I run off road as much as I can as the road hurts too much. Have to say I'm seeing a slight improvement and my heel isn't so painful as it was....time and patience I guess!
  • Thanks Sarah and ET7 - I'm really enjoying focusing on swimming and biking.  I'm SLOW in the pool (a mile in about 40 mins) so plenty of scope for improving.... and tomorrow going to a big bike shop to look at road bikes as I'm pretty sure I want to get one.  Plenty of scope for improvement there too as never owned a road bike!  Whereas with my running I feel I'm unlikely to have too many new PB's.

I did a 10 min jog on grass this afternoon.  So far, not too bad.  Can feel the foot a bit but then I could before too.  Have stretched and iced.  Physio in the morning......

  • WW you are way ahead of me! I can just about do 25 m front crawl but I'm really enjoying it..am rolling my foot on an iced bottle as I type! Ho hum...osteopath for me in the morning.
  • I ran this morning and it went ok - i was home by 8am.

so pleased i went out, even tho foot not yet 100% pain free.

wonder woman - did you get your bike?

  • Hi everyone,

I've been following the thread for a while and have seen how much of a pain PF is to manage. I'm a Physio, so I've done some research for you and written a fairly extensive blog on it. I'm sure you will know a lot of the information in there but hope it might help. Please let me know if there's anything you might add to it, or if anyone would like to write a post for the blog on the perils of PF, always nice to have guest writers. Anyhow, here it is...

    Thanks

    Tom
  • thanks tom,

i'll certainly have a look! still sore and its frustrating.

  • Hi all

Sarah, I spent 4 hours in the bike shop yesterday and tested 6 different ones!  It's down to a final two - and a budget decision.....whether to go for the entry level model or one up (and extra £250!).  Decided to reflect on it for a couple of days but think I'm nearly there...

Foot has been feeling ok today - but then it seems totally randon so not sure that's significant!

Tom, thanks for the link, interesting reading.  Am seeing muscular skeletal clinic next week and bit worried they may suggest an injection - which is not necessarily the route I want to go down given what I've read.  But the icing, stretching and resting don't seem to be getting me anywhere.  Can't believe I ran 26.2 in April and now can't run anywhere!

Sarah are you going to keep running even though painful?

  • evening wonder woman,

i'll try another session on friday unless in agony walking, cos i THINK there is a little improvement.

i have an appointment booked with doc to either have or discuss having an injection myself, next tues, so will see what it feels like from now till then, treating it normally.

the injection scares me a little, not only cos i've been told it hurts, but also because if it works and i can run again, am i not just making it worse but not feeling it? if you know what i mean - pain is a warning after all.

so, is it the upper level bike you're going for? would the extras GAIN you anything or help with your progress?

    anyway, new bike! mmmm!
