Your clubmate and I passed and re-passed each other from the turn onwards, and she certainly looked very distressed. Hope she makes a quick recover.
Time was 4.38.02 on my watch only about 1hr and 8 min off target.

My race was up by 4.5 miles.Along slog after that

The only thing I can think of is that I actually over hydrated Sat & Sun, and upset my electrolyte balance.I forgot my energy drinks did not have electrolyte in them. Hippo is this possible?

All in all there are other marathons and well done to all those who took part.

Well finally home after plane was delayed by nearly 2 hours, home to rainy Devon.

Fab weekend meeting forumites and well done to all those that did their first marathon.

This is a great marathon, disappointing time for me 4.59.41, went off too fast - i should know better.....
  • er not really alan not before the race
i though energy drinks all had electrolye?

it was a long slog cos it was slightly uphill second half and it was bloody hard and hot
    I lost it at 6 miles-trots=walk
    you did a great time

    Hi all

Well done everyone, and speedy recoveries to those that had to pull out on Sunday. Phew....it was, as they say, a "scorcher".

Lovely to meet lots of forumites, and catch up with some familiar faces.

I am still walking a bit strange, but hopefully my legs will get back to normal soon.
  • Evening folks

Got home about 7.30 pm after several stops on route to admire scenery and have lunch and had to make a business stop at Glasgow.

Had a great weekend. Thoroughly enjoyed the company and was great meeting everyone again and meeting new peeps.

The run was another matter. Too hot by far. Was 13 min up at half way on what I expected but well lost it on second half. Really struggled to get to the end but I am a determined b----- and have no sense and just kept plodding along when I should have withdrawn. Mrs Mac's comments at the end were very apt for those who heard them.

Never mind it was a PW so I can only get better.

Well done to all who did this. Thanks Sue W for the nice comment
  • Thanks Hippo, back to the drawing board.

A few other things I forgot to mention. What about Eeyin? 3 Marathons in three weeks ending with a 3.46, a cycle up to FW.
They must be putting something in the water down Greenock way as I noticed they were 1st & 2nd mens teams.

On a sour note I was disgusted yesterday to hear one of the very fast runners swearing at the kids manning the special drinks station at mile 5, because they could not find his drink. I know they are at the sharp end of things, but this was no way to treat a volunteer never mind a child. I hope they are very ashamed of their behaviour.
If it was not for these helpers there would be no special drinks.
  • To all of you who ran yesterday,I thought you were all so brave..the conditions were not ideal at all for running such a distance. I was helping at the special drinks stations along with my three girls, first at the 7 miles and then we drove on to the 15 miles one to give a hand.
It was a pleasure to help out and my children were inspired watching all who took part; so many runners were so kind to the children who gave out the drinks and that was really appreciated, it is not an easy job when a large group of runners arrive at the same time for a drink!
Congratulations to all who finished and I hope that you have a speedy recovery; to those who had to stop and not complete the race, my heart goes out to you and I hope too that you will recover soon..physically and also from the disappointment of having to stop.
    Best wishes to you all.
  • Sue please let us know how your clubmate gets on, sounds as though she had a very hard time of it.

Alan I thought the kids at the special drinks station did very well in the circumstances and my drink was handed to me without any fuss at all. But I guess if you get a group of runners together you may have to wait a couple of seconds or so, no excuse to swear at anyone though.
  • Sue, I stopped & gave your clubmate my water at around 21 miles as she looked pretty bad and just to show that good deeds are repayed, 1/2 a mile later there were a couple of full bottles of water left at the side of the road - hope she's ok.
Speedy, you know I meant 'you crazy fool' in the nicest possible way!! I knew you could do it.
Hilary, the drinks stations were great which makes a big difference when you're struggling so thanks very much - I thought the kids were great & seemed to be enjoying taking part.
  • I thought those kids were fantastic at the drinks stations
i had no idea we would be GIVEN our drinks personally
they even waited 3 hours for me at mile 15

made me feel like a real afflete-it did
    bloody brilliant
  • The kids were great. I felt they were really enjoying themselves. Good on them.

Mrs Mac I took your comments with a chuckle as I knew what you meant but you were so right. If I am to remember anything from yesterday it will be that and I chuckle everytime I think about it.

Only downside on the comments side was a marshall at about 11 miles when the first runner came past me shouting 'Here comes the first real runner'
  • Hilary thanks very much for doing a great job at the drinks stations.
  • Yes indeed I thought all those that manned the stations were great, greeting us with smiles and encouragement.

    Thank You.
  • Well done everybody, I managed a new Pb by 27 mins. ending up with 4-53 but suffered badly in the heat, sunburnt an'all.I was badly dehydrated I did'nt go to the toilet for 10 hours and felt quite ill afterwards.

I'd still do it again though.

Sorry I missed you last night Hippo, I simply was'nt well enough.

Hilary - thanks for doing such a great job at the drinks stations. The kids all deserve personal thanks for being so fantastic. I was sorry to hear that some of the runners were rude to them.

OT - sorry I missed you - I didn't know what you looked like or would have looked for you! Congratulations on your fantastic PB! What was your number - I'll look to see if we have any photos of you. Mr Debbo was taking loads at mile 10/16.

    I can't sleep. :((

SueW - hope your club mate is ok.
  • Hilary - please pass on my thanks to all the helpers at the drinks stations, especially the youngest members of the team. The youngsters did a great job and really helped me along. In fact at one of the special drinks station I was asked by the kids several times if I had a drink there - they were obviously taking their responsibility very seriously and deserve alot of praise for their efforts.
  • Hi all,

Only got back yestereday evening, so my first chance to post a message.

WOW! What a race! That was tough. I was on for a sub 3:15, but by time I finished was on 3:32. Reading all your posts, I guess it was okay. We all seemed to have lost 15-30 mins somewhere.

Did anybody else get sunstroke. I was camping and had to go to bed at 7pm dizzy and sick.

Despite this being one of the hardest race I've done, it was one of the most enjoyable. Thanks Scotland:-) What a cool place!
  • Hey Slowboy,

I was reading your post about the pee thing! I had the same problem.

I think it is something to do with your gastric emtying rate. I am not an expert, but know that about 20% of your blood is around that area and when you run a big race it kind off shuts down a bit so the blood can go elsewhere. I think this means the water can not get through quickly enough to get the fuel to the body and also re-hydrate you. I believe the only way to improve this is to train!!! What's new?
  • Oh great, better get back out and start putting more miles in!
  • Morning everyone. Some fantastic results in that heat, well done!!! I had a great day, the support from the volunteers was superb and I definately hope to be back!

I don't feel too bad this morning, can do stairs up and down, just get stiff if I sit still for more than an hour.

I'm fairly obsessive about getting dehydrated anyway as I know I get really irrational if I am so I guess I was being extremely careful to keep drinking constantly throughout the race (as well as before and after) which I suspect is why I survived the heat so well. That and the fact that I have a super efficient cooling system (I sweat a lot ;-)). I didn't push it too hard because of the heat so I think all in all, although I could probably have gone faster. I had a good race. Looking forward to the next one now!

It was great to meet so many of you there as well.
  • Slowboy, don't forget to drink while you are training :-)

Seriously though, I think that is what you have to do, get used to drinking on the go while training....AAGGHHH!
  • Does anyone know if the results are going up on the web?

Oh, and can I add my own praise for the volunteers on the drinks stations, they were excellent, particularly the kids. Never been at a race where taking your own drinks was even an option, so was really impressed by how well everything worked.
  • debbodebbo ✭✭✭
RHG - did you get your sunscreen? I hope so. What's your next one?
  • Hope everyone got home safely.
Scotty and Moomoo had an eleven hour drive to get home.
Thank you to everyone for making my first marathon such an enjoyable experience.
You are all very nice - barking mad, but very nice.
  • Sorry i missed you too Debbo, i was number 119
  • NessieNessie ✭✭✭
Some great performances there, despite the heat. Sue - I hope your club-mate makes a speedy recovery.

I'd like to add my thanks to the kids (and adults) on the drinks stations - they were so friendly and helpful - and also to the mountain rescue team, who kept coming back to check I had enough water and that I was ok, until I gave up.

For anyone that's interested, there's a half marathon on 5th November, out the same route. Almost definitely cooler than Sunday...... :o)
  • Well folks,

    Just a few thank yous....
Dillo, Smitch, Gavo, et al for taking my kit across, EEyin and david for escorting me across the glens to get there, Debbo for taking me and my kit back. And a big thanks to my legs for not giving up!

Positive mental attitude was what I was trying on Sunday and OMG what a difference it made!

Great day, so much for "taking it easy" now where are those damn results!

[doffs hat in BIG respect to TC]

Fab time after your short (ahem) cycle the day before.

You were looking very strong (and very yellow) when I passed you. Those tri suits are fab!
