  • Morning, tis lovely and sunny here today.  Can't believe it will be October on Thursday!

Your 7 1/4 miles is fab WM, I was chuffed yesterday to run a mile and half to the fun run and then walk back so 6 miles in total.  Legs aching a piece this morning!

  • I know the feeling about aching legs!!! I had to catch the train this morning and the step down from the carriage to the platform is a nightmare. Thank G-d there was an escalator to take me from the platform to the station exit.

Fortunately today I have to move very little - even if I had to I would need a wheelchair! I thought I was supposed to be getting fitter, healthier and more vibrant. I feel like a wreck!!!!!

Could do with an extra couple of weeks to prepare for that 10K - its on October 11th and although I'll be ready, the extra couple of weeks might have given me the chance of a sub-60 10K

    D

  • Morning.

How are your legs today WM?

My left shin hurts more today than yesterday but not the right one, tres odd!

  • Much better thanks Cinders. I dragged myself out of bed at 5am this morning and pounded the streets for about 40 mins on a nice slow run and that seems to have helped a lot. I think it's just the lactic acid settling in after the exercise so that everything just slows down. Plus the fact that I'm getting older and everything seems to be slowing down image

Funny thing about me when I am tired is that I become quite down/ depressed, so yesterday I was a grumpy old git and tended to keep myself to myself - probably the best way. But I'm back fighting fit again today, and feeling a lot happier for it. Off to the bookshop later to buy myself a goody - not sure what to go for ... I've just finished biographies/ autobiographies by Liz McColgan and Paula Radcliffe and enjoyed both. I've seen one on Arthur Lydiard which I quite like, but then there are a whole bunch of novels I want to read as well. Then there are all the CDs I really want to add to my collection .... and the movies I want to see.

Sigh ... I don't suppose any of you here know a 98 year old senile woman with a heavy duty heart condition who also happens to be a billionaire and fancies having a brief fling before she keels over and leaves her lover all the money? Not sure what Alison would say ... but if I walked in with a few million I'm sure she'd find a way to forgive me!!! I know the kids would.

    D

  • Well I've made the decision - I'm going to have a crack at a half marathon. It so happens that there is one near me in March, so I really will have very little excuse. I know I could probably fit one in earlier, but Alison is talking about doing a 10K at Christmas and I'd like to go around and support her. If we  do it will still leave me 3 months to prepare and, who knows, she might want to have a crack at it too image

    D

  • Exciting decision WM, which half is it?  Be nice if Alison was able to do it too with you?  I've entered Silverstone half in March.
  • Good news on the half  WM, will watch your training with interest.

Ive just entered Reading Half in March - anyone else interested?image

  • Evening all

Just a quick post, been busy packing everything away.  I can't believe 2 people can have so much stuff - and I'm the least materialistic person you're ever likely to meet.  Apart from my piggy back collection and 'ornaments' the kids have provided over the years I hardly have anything that's not needed.

Which 1/2m are you going for WM, there's so many to choose from, especially at that time of year.

Do you fancy the T.Wells 1/2 again HTF, you could egg me on up the hill image.  What marathon are you going to do after Beachy Head, you'll have to do a 'normal' one if only to make you realise that they aren't all like Beachy.  After that any other one will seem easy peesy.

Hi Cinders, hope both shins are ok tomorrow.

Must go now, being picked up at 6.30am tomorrow, we've got a stand at the construction expo in Chatham - talk about variation in your job!

    Nite nite all Dx image

  • Morning all,

Well I noticed that my home town (Stafford) are organising a half in March, so all I'll have to do is roll out of bed and wander into town. To be honest, I'm rather expecting my times at the 10K on Oct 11th will be rather poor, but I'm hoping that with some training I can bring myself up to a sub-60 for the one in December and then, ideally improve again so I can manage a half in about 2 hours.

Everyone else well? How are your shins Cinders?

  • Morning all

Couldnt face a run yet after the NF on Sunday, so I swam 40 lengths insteadimage.

Will think about T.Wells SL.  Wokingham is the following week and Im sure it doesnt have a big hill in the middle!

Not sure if I'll do another marathon after Beachy.  This could be my first and last.  Serioulsy starting to feel sick about how undertrained I am.  Longest run so far 13 miles.  Beachy - 3 weeks away.  SL  I was thinking about maybe doing 16 this weekend and  then praying I have an almighty tail wind on the day.  Any advice welcomeimage.

I have entered London, but hold little hope of getting a place, but I was rejected last year, so that would be my 2 of 5 rejections.

Cinders - Silverstone, interesting choice.  It is of course flat, but Im assuming you'll go round twice.

I would love to finish a half in 2hrs WM.  PB at the moment 2hr 10.  You'll have to let me know your secret.  I know I could do a sub 60 10k, but its keeping it going thats the problem.

  • Easy .. catch a bus image

Seriously, one of my faults is that I put myself under intense pressure with times and alternate my training with weekly speed and hill work. It's killing me .. lol

    D

  • I've entered London too HTF, if I don't get in this will be my 3rd rejection!   In my wildest dreams I'd love a GFA but that's really dreaming!!!

Silverstone is flat, its 3 laps but they don't follow the same laps, its a bit higgly but I've quite enjoyed the 2 I've done before.

  • Grief Cinders a GFA place.  I have more chance of learning to walk on water.  What is your quickest half marathon time.

Good luck with Silverstone, went to watch the F1 there last year.  Im assuming it is on the race course.

  • Yes, round the track, starting from the starting straight!  Sadly its 2.05 and that was 4 years ago.  Just a dream for a GFA image

Talking of London though, on the clubhouse section there's several threads about the VLM site now having a "accepted but not yet paid" button and if you put your details in (if you entered of course) you get various messages including, congrats payment ready for processing, which is what I got!!!

  • Cinders - amazing how I really didnt care about London, until it looks like I didnt get in.  Dont like rejection meimage.

Hey, there are so many other good marathons to enter, shouldnt really care.  Keep repeating ..................

  • Lol HTF.  Seems the VLM site now been changed so its anyone's guess again!
  • CindersCinders ✭✭✭
Just got my VLM acceptance mag, cripes, best think about some proper training image
  • Bloody Hell, I just got my acceptance mag too image !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  Fingers crossed for HTF.  I'll have to do some proper running now image.  I was so chuffed I was jumping up and down waving the mag about infront of the man who'd come to do the gas check, I bet he thought 'what's that mad overweight middle aged bird exicited about'.

As I will be 50 by April I will go into a new GFA category.  All I need to do now is pull of a sub 4 marathon somewhere between now and the FLM and I'll get a guaranteed entry for the next year.  It's not likely though, my fastest was 4:02, but that was16 years ago, lots of things have deterioated since then image.

HTF, if you do T.Wells with me I'll do Wokingham with you - where is Wokingham?

I'm working at home today but it's proving difficult.  There's still so much needs doing and it's distracting me but I feel on cloud 9 now so a good time to crack on.

  • CindersCinders ✭✭✭

Well done SL.  Fingers crossed too for HTF.

Cripes, euphoria wearing off now and panic setting in!!!!

  • Dont Panic Captain Mainwering - there's plenty of time  to return to being a lean mean running machine image.  Don't forget we used to have over 2 months less notice when it was the postal entry and we managed to get to the finish line then.    How old is Buttons now - maybe you've still got some of the post pregnacy effect left - you know how all these women have babies then run like a rocket for ages afterwards.
  • Congrats to all those who were accepted for the VLM!!! I am deeply and seriously envious. It's something I would love to do one day, but I need to be realistic and build into it gradually. With a bit of luck I can spend the next year getting healthier and then join all you guys in 2011.

With a VLM acceptance under your belt I'm sure you'll have all the incentive you need to go training. Will you be just running for the fun or will you be running for charity?

Hope your post was just late hopeto and that you were accepted as well.

Cinders/ hopeto - what's a GFA? Good For Anything? Gooey Food Agent? Generally Feeling Awful? Going Flippin' Ape?

    D

  • Huge congratulations SL and Cindersimageimageimageimageimageimageimageimageimageimageimageimageimageimageimageimageimageimage

Just what you two needed to kick start that running again properly.

Fairly sure I didnt get in.  Website said it didnt recognise me as being successful, but never mind.  I could support you two at mudchute armed with jelly beans!

Okay SL, you tell me when youve entered TW and then I will too.  Wokingham is about 1hr 19 minutes from you or 65 miles.  Checked on AA route planner.

  • CindersCinders ✭✭✭

Seeing you at mudchute with jelly beans HTF would be a very welcome sight indeed image

Tis indeed just what I need to get going again, have sneaked in a wee plod this pm while Buttons in nursery as have college again tonight.

He's now 20 months SL, would love some of that post preg speed but I didn't have it before ha ha!

WM, yep its Good For Age, in my case of 18-49 year old women, I'd need a GFA time in another marathon of 3 hours 45 and I'd get automatic entry to VLM the following year.  Pipe dreams for me but hey ho image

  • Hmmm ... if they ever have a GFA of "reach finish line before retirement" I might apply.

    D

  • Still keeping my fingers crossed for you for a day or two yet HTF.  How can you check online to see if you're successful - I couldn't see where unless it's the accepted but not paid bit which some people said wasn't working.  Have you been getting post - the posties are on strike in some places.

I've just entered the T.Wells online HTF.  I can't afford to do wokingham too today but can do it on 20th.  Can you remind me then as I've a memory like a sieve.  I'll stick it in my outlook calender too just to make sure.

My good for age category is for (fingers desperately trying not to type the right figures) 50 - 54 and to qualify I would have to run a sub 4 hour marathon.  The times and categories are different for men WM, its 41-59, sub 3:15, 60-64 sub 3:30 and 65-69 sub 4:00.

Jelly beans sound great HTF but can you request bananas too please image.

Cinders, the whole thing about the post preggers speed is that women usually run better and faster after having a baby regardless of how fast you were before.  I don't know how long the effect lasts but I know it's not 19 years so no hope there for me.

  • SL - went onto vlm website clicked on accepted but not paid, put in my details, and  it said they couldnt find me as being successful.   So no chance im afraid.  Which is a crap, but i'll live with it.  Really enjoyed going up as a spectator last year, and bananas now on the list too!

Okay I'll enter TWells and I'll remind you about Wokingham.

Massive descrepancy between the mens and the womens GFA, thank god im a woman!  Knew there would come a time if i waited long enough to say thatimage.

  • You'LL  have to wait longer to catch up with me image.  It really is a big difference though, the guys have to be at least 15 years longer for the same GFA.  Serves most of 'em right to think they're better than us most of the time ( WM excepted).  As well as having to get my ass running, I've also got to stop this smoking lark.  I've got a new job, new house, new marathon place (image) so perhaps it's time I had a new non smoking/wheezing me.

Must go to bed now and preserve my energy image

    Nite nite all, Dx

  • Officially rejected.  Hate that magazine full of smiling happy people running the marathon.  They should just send the reject letter and save on moneyimage.

On the plus side though, postie also dropped through entry form for Wokingham half, so cheered up a bit (not much!).

Can I get close to a sub 2hr for a spring half - and with that hill SL it wont be at Twells!

We should now all put more effort into running, eating less, and losing weight!

So Mudchute for me it is then.  Had a ace day last year, so bananas and jelly beans pre-orderedimage.

  • This running stuff is costing me a fortune!! I've lost so much weight I've had to go out and buy 2 new suits for work. Having said that, I confess it was rather fun .. and the fact I am no longer clinically obese and just plain "abit overweight" a huge bonus.

Silly me - I did some strides this am to increase my speed and now I have the return of teh ache in my right foot. I know it's because I am primarily a forefoot strike runner and I really need a suitable pair of running shoes. Been looking at some of the recent reviews in the mags of these new technology ones where you can slide in forefoot pads, but on the whole they seem to be about a £100 and I've never spoken to anyone who uses them.

Of course all the shops say - Oooh they are wonderful, Sir ... but that means nothing. Guess I need to do a lot more research so I know what's best on the market.

    D

  • image, never mind HTF, we'll find another one to make up for it.

WM, you really need to find a good specialist running shop, it'll be worth travelling a few miles for it.  A good one will offer you sound advice, want you to run in the shoes before you buy them, so ill even let you run round the block - but most importantly, if you've explained the problem you get and the shoes they recommend still give you that problem they should be happy for you to return them and change them for something else.

It's probably worth starting a thread in the Gear forum asking for recommendations for a shop near (ish) to you.

It's my last day doing the old job today image, the girls got me a nice pressie of  an outdoor candle set and some funny  silly pressies including some tiara hair slides (!), a bag of spinach for my green smoothies, a drinks bottle and a foot cooling pad for running.  Very thoughtful of themimage.  All I've gotta do now is run - but probably not in my tiara image

Have a fab weekend everyone, I don't know if I can access the forum at KCC and I'll be computerless at home for a short while till the new phone line and broadband stuff is set up so don't know when I'll be back online after the move.

    Take care all, Dx
