After a shock reading at the chemist last week, I bought myself a blood pressure monitor.
When is the best time to take a reading that is representative of my norm? If I sit still for a few minutes and conciously relax, it comes down to a healthy level. If I just sit down and take it straight away, its on the high side.
So, how do I know if I really have high blood pressure or not??

10 days ago you told me to go to the doctor and get it measured again, instead I bought a monitor off ebay(a BHS approved model) because I couldn't believe it was so high. If I relax its regularly abou 120/75, so assume this is OK.
stop worrying

(and corrrect me if I'm wrong PH)
Relaxed is the good result, but if you can take a daily reading and input it into a spreadsheet, and note how you are feeling, you can get an idea how certain situations affect your BP.
You really would not want to measure BP during a 10k
BTW I love spreadsheets!
What would it be during a 10K??
Please dont do it
seriously
dont get obsessed
itr spounds as tho your BP is fine
Sore Toes, listen to Hips.
drugs is sometimes necessary
But it sounds as tho your Bp is ok ST
- I won't obsess.
- I will keep calm and not get stressed.
- I won't attempt to take bp reading during 10K
etc....
If you have genuinely and persistently high blood pressure then you need drugs to prevent complications later on
Unfortunately, relaxation techiniques havent been proven to have a significant effect on reducing blood pressure
they shoudl, but they dont
Just posted on the BP thread you started.
To reiterate the most important point:
Insist on having a 24hr portable BP monitor before taking any drugs!
If BP is normal for most of the day, you have no health worries about this.
If your BP is high all day while your at work but fine when relaxed, then that would be a concern, but the issue would be avoiding / coping with stress.
The fact that your 'relaxed' blood pressure is fine suggests that drugs shouldn't be necessary.
