Buy some brand new xc spikes. Wear them in a race. Put them in a corner until you next have to use them. Bend them to crack all the mud off. Try and get your feet back in and tie the laces up. Do another race. Repeat
Sorry, If you want to look after them properly, put some grease on the thread before you screw them in. You don't need much and it will simply stop it corroding so you can get them out again.
Do you take them out after you've used them? Get a pair of pliers/adjustable spanner if they sieze up and the spike tool won't get them out. Squirt some degreaser/wd40/gt85 on them to loosen. I've only ever bought one pair of spikes (for xc) and the same spikes have remained in since.
Aye yeah... you've obviously not heard the saga with the spike that got stuck.... I'm going to try some anti-rust stuff and WD40 in the holes before I even put the vaseelined spikes in.... hopefully this will do the trick... if not, well, I've run out of ideas!

Has worked for mine.

I have no problem with vaseline though.
