What does it involve?
Participation in an Ice Warrior Expedition will be arduous in the extreme, both physically and mentally.
Initially there may be continual darkness as the start date will be on the edge of the Arctic Winter. This means enduring temperatures of – 50 Celsius coupled with very large wind chill factors. The mode of travelling will be by foot and ski and you will be expected to haul a sledge carrying equipment and provisions across treacherous and difficult terrain including rock, snowfields, sea ice, flat ice, ice ridges, and leads of open water. We will be travelling through known Polar Bear ‘country'. Although the teams are made up of numerous people weather conditions often dictate long periods of ‘solitary' travelling. Except for possible re-supplies, the team will be self-sufficient and in the event of injury or accident members will be expected to help each other survive and affect rescue, if necessary.
All participants are novices in this area.
And my wife - Petal - has been selected to go on one of the 2 selection weekends at the beginning of December.
And she calls me mad for doing an Ironman next year???

I'm sooooooooooooooooooooooo excited! Not sure what to expect at selection - I'm just told to take wet weather gear and a change of clothes! (Maybe they borrow the ToughGuy course?)
But then I may not get selected, so must rein in the excitement till just before Christmas.
If I make it, I'll be begging for sponsors.

I've no idea of the cost (£125 entry fee and selection - so far) and apart from a week in Norway and 3 weeks in Canada as part of teh training, I know nothing!
I don't even know where the selection week-end will be. I am presuming that its all part of assessing how flexible I can be, and whether I really have the "whatever" it is they are looking for.
Avalaf, I'm not exactly sure "fun" comes into it.......... -50 degrees, slowly dragging my own weight in sled across a completely dark, ice flow?

It makes me laugh though when I think of us lot last year setting off on toughguy and FB saying that even that would be something you would never do... how wrong was he!!!

but I know Petal was really envious when those 4 ladies made the North Pole a couple of years ago from being complete novices and was peed she never even knew about the project, let alone have a go at being selected...........this is her chance to make up for missing out on that one.........
That was it - I did our (2 flights of) stairs in a PB, logged on and realised that Saturday was the closing date for POSTAL entries. I fired off a pleasding email instead and the rest, as they say, is history.
I'm still waiting to hear from Ju2 if she made it to selection, but she did the KIM Mountain marathon earlier this year and is a far more able athlete than me so I can't she why she won't be there. It would be good to have a soul mate ;-)
If I'd known about it in time, I would have posted as I know I'm not the only one who's barking.
