  • I agree with Gillian re:- the toilets. I used the toilet of a very kind local shop-keeper in grantan direction. Luxury, it was.. toilet paper, wash hand basin, mirror, and fluffy towel!
  • billyb.. just spotted your result. Bloody fantastic, I just cannot understand what speed you must have been running at for the whole race. You must be on cloud 11. Congratulations and enjoy the celebrations.

PS. thanks for all the encouragement you gave me away back at the beggining of my training on here. Your comments gave me a real boost.

  • just read all your comments on your successes! brilliant for everyone just to complete it!

i was helping at the promanade relay change over point,

i had a really good day, and after reading the messages- i think running bhoy got me with his water, cant believe you can have sense of humor at 21 miles

so hope to do this race one year, bit to early in my running life for marathon yet (just one 10k under my belt)

wheather was typical scottish, raining and sunny, got soaked and got sun burnt on my face!

  • I echo many of the comments about the expo, goodie bag, Tshirt, having to buy the magazine and overall expense, but the thing that amazed me most was that the mile markers were so wrong. The 22 was there (on the road), but having slowed down to 8m/m, I didn't expect to have a 10 min wait to 23 miles, to be follwed by a 6 min mile (which I've never done in my life!) to 24. The 25 mark was also about 150 metres late.

Other than that, the weather was perfect and was really pleased with 3-21 after blowing up in Boston.
  • K9 / Peaceman - congratulations on time - sorry we missed at the start, rain / plus hectic I think.

HB - Sorry about you missing the sub four, better luck with you next races.

Happy with my first marathon - 3.22 on my watch, but know that there is a sub 3 in there, was too conservative on first half - 1.43 and was playing catch up in second.

Good event from my perspective, although that hill was a killer between 24 and 25. Yeah, also missed the 22 marker and was it me or was the mile between 23 and 24 somewhat short ?

  • hopefully the nxt marathon has all miles at the same distance as mile 24 in this one. easy job to get a 2:45 or so then.
  • Well done all. Have you seen the Evening Times? 5 page photo supplement? A bit poor I thought.

Mandie I am sorry I didn't hear, Don did you shout me at the park? I had nipped to the portaloo and was trying to catch up with Mike :)

The supporters and marshalls and helpers were fab.
  • My friend has just e-mailed me all the photos from yesterday, including one of a very happy but exhausted darkwinter hobbling across the line.
  • diffinetley wasn't impressed with foto supplement in evening news.
hope the results supplement is better
  • also missed 22 mile marker and showing a 6 minute mile on splits on mile 24 should i do this one again if missing out on london!
  • Everyone has done really well I am so pleased for you all. Me and Mike and our mental fit pal have a running joke and we take it in turns to be hero of the week depending on who has done what.

This week we are all heroes. take a bow!

  • Anyone local able to post the pic supplement anywhere? Or is there a link?

Definitely no 22 mile marker. But I didn't see the 6 mile marker either so I assumed I was just starting to get delirious. Well done Peaceman-the-marathon-runner!! If We'd run together maybe I wouldn't have set off too fast like I did. Who knows. And well done Darren -that's a fantastic time....I thought you were being very conservative aiming for sub-four. You must have zoomed past me at some point in the second half. Good luck with chasing your future sub-three...I'll be after a sub 3:30 at some point -just need to decide when and where. I've a feeling sub 3:15 is the 'elite' entry time for women in London ....there's something distant to dream about.
  • The other thing a few local people have been saying this year (like the last two years) was that unless they knew someone personally doing the marathon, they would never have known it was on. Weird that the advertising side isn't the best when the organisers clearly have big plans for it.

I guess its a bit of a vicious circle though, in terms of attracting advertisers & runners which in turn will affect the entry cost and things like the Expo, goody bags etc.

Bit disappointed with the Evening News coverage too. Oh well, at least I've still got my medal.
  • Thanks Katypie - found the articles about the winner etc. but no pics or anything that looks like the pullout section on the fornt page? Am I being stupid and have missed it or is it not available online?
  • Just got back to Essex after a delayed flight from Edinburgh to Stanstead

I did hear a 'c'mon BHA' shout at about 22, was that you? as I had my BOB on my shirt and had been getting 'cmon bob' shouts all the wqay round, it took me a while to realise that it was meant for me, and was obviously someone from this forum.

Bought the evening news this morning after a walk up to and around the castle. Photo of me & running partner 'RICH' on top left of page 4 of the 'final whistle' supplement.

Anyway, trained for a 4.30, but guessed something better was on the cards after a 1.53 half at Reading, then 1.23 10miler 4 weeks ago.

First 2 uphill & crowded miles were 10 mins each, then settled into a 9 min mile pace, went through halway in 1.59.40. 9 minute miles kept coming, started to believe that sub-4 was on at about the 18 mile mark.

The George Cross shirts went down really well for the most part with loads of encouragement (the names on the shirts helps a lot) only 2 lots of 'antis', a few murmers against the English at about 17, but taken in jest and humour ensued, ans then some kids at 24/25 who asked 'are you english' 'aye' and then proceeded to squirt us with water, luckily I had a bottle in my hand as well and they got more back!

At 21 miles it started to hurt and thought the sub 4 was slipping. Didn't see the 22 mile marker (didn't see one at 7 miles either!) and really thought it had gone! thought when we got to 23 it looked like we might miss it, but kept going. Past 25 miles and it still looked tight, then a supporter shouted 800m to go, and it was on! pushed the pace a bit, and a couple of minutes later saw the 800m to go sign,

Kept it going, crossed the line in 3.58.07 according to the watches. I am now officially retired from Marathon running! (until the next one, probably)

  • Hi All

I am glad I have found this thread and pleased their are lots like me and saw no mile 22 marker.

I finished in 3:23:51 but had a stinker of a last 5m. I definetly knew their was something wrong as I slowed down terribly to 8/9 minute miles at 22 (guess) 23 mile markers and then put in a 6:58 (if believed) 24 mile pace. The last mile went in at 10 something and then stumbled across the finish into the hands of the first aid staff.

    Well done to all

    Ian

  • I've just went through all the threads from yesterday and they've made me feel 100times better.
It was my 1st marathon yesterday, reckon my time was about 4.45, won't know exactly until results are posted. I was a liitle miffed as I thought I'd manage around 4.30. But as a 1st timer I did not appreciate how hard the last 6 miles would be. I'd done all the training and was coping ok with 20milers......but that last 6 took every bit of strength both mental and physical from me.
I ache like I've never ached before, how long will this last?
But.............I am bloody proud of myself for finishing.
Still not sure whether I could do it again though.

I agree with MandieR......the relay runners passing by were really annoying.
And the severe lack of loos is a problem the organisers need to resolve.

I'm away now to tend my aching limbs.
Maybe see you all next year.
  • I didnt mind the relay runners actually. I just thought - huh wonder how fast they'd be going if they had just done 20 miles - or whatever. also kept it a bit busier which I liked too. But Where were the Pipe Bands ??- i was so looking forward to getting all tearful at the skirl of the pipes !!?? also not enough toilets - although I was lucky enough to have a well timed stop at the public loos on portobello prom - loo seat, paper etc and no queue.

  • Hail Hail

Some more really good stories. Well done all.

Casslass - aye, it prob was me who soaked you with a water bottle. Sorry. As for keeping the humour, if you cant have a laugh, then why the hell are you doing it in the first place? I also find that if I can give you volunteers a laugh, it makes me feel a bit better. Plus I have to run faster to get away from any retaliation!!

Magoo - it was me shouting at Donaldo, but the big deefie never heard me until 25.5M when I came thundering past him at full tilt, desperate to get my sub3!!

Anybody started training again yet? I'm hoping to do EK half on the 26th, but it is Mrs RB dependent!! If I do do it, then I'm going to go for it, and try for 1.22 or less. Apparently, under 1.20 would qualify me for NY marathon. Dunno if thats for this year or next.
  • rb - i think qualification times for this year's nyc marathon had to be submitted by 1st may (i was lucky to get an entry via the ballot) - so u r obviously still younger than 39... a half-marathon time of 1:21 or a marathon time of 2:50 is what you need for next year...

also, as far as running ek half-marathon, would that be too soon for us lesser mortals (seeing it is a week on sunday)?
  • Hamish

I am much slower than RB and after FLM I had 1 week off and then had a long run of 16M so a 1/2M should be okay.
