Did London last year- now attempting Edinburgh! How much harder is this one? Are there more hills? Should I be doing a tougher training schedule than I did for London? Help!!
You might also be interested in the Lasswade 10 mile race which is on the 6th March - mothers day. It starts at 12.00 so you'll get an extra long lie (even if you're not a mum!)
Was planning on doing the Balloch - Clydebank one to, but the feckers in Renton would steal the eyes out your head then chase you for the sockets! We'll see, might ask that nice Mr Ferris to ride shotgun.
There's also the Alloa 1/2M on 20th March so was probably going to give that a try.
Let me know if you fancy Lasswade, I'll be doing a West - East trip that day.
RB - only just got back to reality after the dreadful result last week! Shocker.
Hi - just looking for some tips. This is my first marathon and a friend who ran the FLM a couple of years back has advised me to drink lucozade or something similar thoughout training as she was struggling at the 18m mark and couldn't take any of the freebies as she hadn't trained with it. Is this something worth doing or are sports drinks not given out at Edinburgh and I'd therefore be getting used to something that wouldn't help on the day? All of the info seems to state that 'Scottish water' is given out but no mention of sports drinks and I'm not keen on the whole water bottle on the wrist thing as I've heard they can be bad for your running. Bit of a muddle - anyone who's done it before know the crack? Cheers
I thought I read somewhere (can't remember where!) that the advice was to get used to drinking Lucozade Sport. Or is my training finally sending me delerious?
Don' know what they are giving out at Edinburgh, but I personally find that SiS Go-Gels are ideal. No water needed to take them and about3/4 are ideal for a marathon. I think that most of the major brands of energy drink - Lucozade Sport, Gatorade, Powerade, are nutritionally much the same, but some taste bogging! Experiment and find one that you like. I carried a hand-held bottle during my first marathon and wouldn't do it again, but as I say it's personal.
Hope everyone's training well for June although some of the expected times mentioned on here are a bit scary! I'll stick to my 3.45 schedule I think.
I'm doing the Stafford 20 on March 13 and hope to do better than in the Stamford 30K a couple of weeks ago. Had a cold a few days before and shouldn't have run. But it was my first 'proper' race. First 23K went fine then it hit me. The scary thing was how quickly things went from going smoothly to really hurting. The last 6K was agony! Even had to stop a couple of times. Managed 2.36 but didn't feel good. If that's the wall it's best avoided!
Thanks for all the responses re:sports drinks. Since a few of you seem to have run Edinburgh a few times - which are the 'tricky' bits I need to look out for? I've heard that it can be hard at times due to the course and the fact that it's not supported all the way around, but I'd heard the course had changed this year and it was also going to be televised so perhaps there will be a few more supporters?
Done the Bury 'Nearly 10' last weekend as my last training run for the Reading Half this weekend.
Want to get under 2hrs for half-marathon, so for Bury I aimed for 1.25 knowing that if I could continue at that pace for the half marathon it would be under the 2 hour barrier.
Went round in 1.22.22, hopefully I didn't take too much out of myself and I can get a sub 2 on Sunday!!
Point taken BHA Bob. I guess we all have different expectations. As it will be my first marathon perhaps I'm being over-optimistic timewise! But like yourself, I reckon that if the pace for the training runs and preparation races feels OK then you can give a fair estimate of your time for the marathon. Hope I'm right!
Whatever the time, I'm looking forward to it. And hopefully meeting some of the forumistas on here afterwards as well.

Am doing a 10 mile this weekend, and Reading Half the weekend after.
I can't find any races listed on here of around 20 miles to use as training for Edinburgh.
Eveything seems to be targetted for FLm runners.
Can anyone help?

Stalkerman,
I'm entered in CB 1/2 and Lasswade :O). Can't wait to see the notorius 'renton' - you get to see all the best bits of places running don't you?
There is the South Cheshire 20 on the 8 May which I am using as part of my training schedule, at £6 affiliated & £8 unaffiliated its a bargin.
It use to be known as the Bombardier 20 and came about because of the Potters Marathon in June which this year is only a Half.
Hope that helps
Sorry forgot to include the link to the organisers web site

NOTE TO SELF: Do not wear it again
Lucozade Sport is London Marathon
scrap that last message, just read on email back from Edinburgh saying it IS Lucozade Sport.
Sorry everyone
Thanks for the confirmation BHA Bob.

Your 3.45 sounds a bit scary to me!!

My target for Edinburgh is sub 4.30.

PB!!
1.53.38, I was hoping to get under 2 hrs & smashed it!!!
Does this mean I have to upgrade my Edinburgh estimate from sub 4.30?
