Can anyone recommend a good lightweight head torch - the one I have for camping is not really suitable for running in! Decided I needed one as the street lighting is so poor round here I tripped over a manhole cover the other night and splatted myself on the pavement

love mine, but then I'm slow. If you're quicker you might need a longer beam.
It's a Petzl Tikka Plus, about £30, got mine from Wiggle.
I would not use it as my only light source for major offroad, but makes a huge difference for road running, & much safer too for dark lanes. Mine's on the elastic they come with & doesn't bob, despite me having very thick & slippery hair.

No it is in the woods in Swansea, oh boy so it is not going to work and I am still going to run into streams;-)

Obtainable from Ultrasport (orienteering kit).
Ideal for running in dark forests in the frozen North.
Tikka plus is great for running on smoother surfaces, plenty light for this and the batteries last forever. Great bit of kit and light as a feather.
The problem is that the LED light is very 'flat' and doesn't cast shadows very well. On undulating grown (off road) it doesn't give the depth perception that you need and this leads to twisted ankles etc.
I do a lot of off road running and hence then bought the Myo. This is brilliant but a bit heavier. I still use the Tikka on road and pavement, even in pitch dark and it is great. Just not up the job over the downs in the dark.
PS - I have just seen the Petzl website and note the Myo is now a bit smaller and takes 3 batteries not 4. Don't know if this effects the performance - mine is the 'old' model with blue strap - new one is beige coloured.

The Black Diamond Zenix, to coin a phrase it's the badgers nadgers!
The hyperbright LED in the centre gives a very bright beam with no shadowing and the dual LED's give a more diffuse light. The LED's are regulated which means the light level remains the same despite the batteries getting used up. There are three levels of brightness and a strobe for each LED option.
It is much brighter than the petzl tikka having a 30m beam on the highest setting for the hyperbright LED. There is a battery metre light on the side which shows Green amber or red depending on battery charge and when the unit is switched off the same light blinks green once every 3 seconds to help you find the unit in the dark.
