I've been known to turn up to fell races (though usually get the 'muddiest runner' award at the end as i stagger in late & lost), & for a mid-packer there's nothing much different about them compared to road races, except that the scenery's better & they're more fun, & the pace is more varied, which'd probably make for better ultrarunning. proper shoes do make a big difference - i wear inov8 mudrocs, but i think they're considered slightly wimpy compared to walshes (probably a better bet for ultras though as more cushioning & better on hard-packed stuff).
Thanks for the plug Hippo. Nice to know I got something right for a change. I can't supply maps but if anyone wants a route description let me have your e-mail address at

and the bloody great roring river at the bottom Its so steep and slippy, i was clinging on to little tussocks of heather Even ultra hamster was worried he phoned me to tell me to watch out when i got to that bit
Funny that i cant remember that when i did this 23 years ago
Thanks for encouraging feedback. By the sound of conditions I doubt I could run half the distance as I'm no ultra-runner. Happy to do it inside the 12. Sounds scary but also absolutetly fascinating!
Ravines and rope bridges... better get the fedora out!
Oh and there isn't a rope bridge-there just needs to be. Straight down one side, jump across the raging torrent, and then scramble straight up the other side. It was definitely worth pausing to look at the views from there, bad weather or not. And then its not too far to the finish and the running does get eaisier.
My legs ENDED UP clean because I realised on the way down from Lila cross the stream bed was the smoothest path-much water splashed up legs- and it was raining by then so I presume that helped wash the mud off too.
