Wasn't it cold!?
After the last few days fighting a sore throat I was a little worried about racing today. But me being me, there's not much to stop me once I've made up my mind.
I got to the race about an hour early. Plenty of time for a proper warm-up and use the loos before the crowds. There were only 6 porta-loos for 600 runners, so didn't want to have to queue for goodness knows how long. As it turned out, I don't think people waited that long.
Anyhow, warm consisted of 1 mile easy and a couple of fast strides. Felt ok at this stage and decided to just go for it.
I lined up at the start in my little race shorts, t-shirt under my vest and my gloves. Felt more than a little chilly, but the guys in front were big enough to shield me for a little while at least!
Hit mile 1 in 6.44, only a few seconds faster than what I was going to try and achieve. Was running with someone I know from another club, who has beaten me every race so far, by about 10 secs, so dedided to stay with her as long as possible. Mile 2 arrived in 6.52, 2 secs slower than I wanted, but still on target. My companion seemed to be breathing much harder than me, so I took this as a good sign. By mile 3 I was feeling very comfortable and hit it in 6.54. I didn't want to drop anymore secs, but I think we were running into a slight, very cold wind, which although wasn't much I was aware of it. By 3 1/2 miles I had dropped my companion, who I was hoping would do the pacing! On my own now, telling myself not to settle into comfort zone, hit mile 4 slighly faster in 6.51 and feeling strong. Wished I had someone to run with and could see another lady in the distance so decided to chase her down. I pushed on quite hard through to mile 5 in 6.49, another quicker mile. Only just over a mile to go and thinking I could still get sub 42mins if I pushed a bit harder. I did try! but the last mile was beginning to tell and although I didn't quite catch the lady in front, she couldn't have been more than 1 sec at finish. My finish time was 42:16 a PB by 31secs. Very pleased with that-sub 42 next year!
Got a christmas pudding and free soup for the effort. Also picked up an age group prize so good days work I believe.
Hope everyone else had a good run.
