  • i had three classmates in high school with osgood schlatters. two decided to take the docs advice and rest. they recovered. the third, an avid basketball player played through the pain. the pain persisted and now at the age of 23 he underwent surgery. so just be patient and rest the leg.......3 months compared to 10 years isnt much
  • hf - I think you'll find that the original post was made 6 years ago!
  • dude i have no cure for it but i have it as well and iv had it for about atleast a year maby more and i would like to get rid of it, but the problem is i do free running or if you like parkour so hay, i normally just ignore it im quite tolrant to pain but some times can get very pissed off at the never ending pain!

if u want to email me back because i dont ever go on this site so justr email me @william.ogilvy@hotmail.co.uk

  • I've got a lump under one knee, which I've had since I was a teenager.  I saw a physio about something else when i was 24, and he said it looked like I'd had Osgood-Schlatter.   I used to find kneeling very painful, and the lump itself used to be sore, but I haven't had any real pain from it for years and years now (I'm 41) so I must have grown out of it.
  • hi i have had osd for about 3 years now and i am 14 years old.

i have recently developed severe ocification[calcium deposit] in the joint. most of the doctores my parents have consulted feel that this is what is causing the pain. one of the doctors says removing the ocicle with surgery will mostly cure my pain whereas others are reluctant to operate due to the risk of damging the growth plate, meaning the front of my knee will stopr grwing.

do you think we should go ahead for the operation/?

  • I have a lump under my Rt knee cap. I assumed I got it from kneeling down next to infant sized desks all day (teacher!). I asked the doc when last in, and he said it was due to OSD as a teenager. Strange thing is I have NO recollection of this at all. The biggest pain is the itch as the lump has a nice patch of very dry, flaky skin, the kind you love to scratch 'till it bleeds!

Anyway, I think docs are best placed for advice on operations. I would hate for anyone to give such advice based on a few lines in a forum. I would, however, ask lots of questions based on the long term view of the options as some may have more severe implications for athletic life than others. Tough call at 14 - good luck with whatever you decide.

Now for one last scratch before a dollop of E45 cream.....
  • i am 13 years old. i had it when i was in the soccer team of my school i was to be the next in line in the greatest goalkeeper in my school. i was told that i was the fastest boy in school .i left my career and continued my life with my teamates looking back at me.

I like a nice caress now and then!
  • Have had this since 14 years old and now 36 years old. It nevers goes and during those early years I did karate and rugby heavily. I wore a support when doing karate and sometimes when playing rugby, but the key thing is, rest when your knee tells you to rest, because it doesn't go away and you just have to live with it.

I have been training for my first marathon, and as a rule am not a distance runner at all. I don't wear supports that often but have decided to for the marathon shortly. So don't let it be an obstacle to physical exertion and let your body be the guide. You will be surprised at how much you can do.

  • I had Osgood Schlatters Disease when I was 12/13 years old.  I remember we were about to go on holiday when this golf ball lump appeared on my knee.  Then not long later, another lump appeared on the other knee.  I don't remember much more about it but I now suffer from really bad cracking knees and when I kneel down, I sometimes get a really sharp stinging pain in the knee.  I guess it is connected but not sure.
  • I was diagnosed with O.G in both knees when I was 12. wasn't very active per say, my main mode of transport was my bicycle though! I ended up having one leg in plaster for 6 weeks which seemed to cure it, but left me with the 'knee lumps'.

I'm 31 now and this year I decided to get into running for the first time since school. Been O.K for the first 3 weeks, but now get a pain in my left knee after about a mile which i can only describe as feeling like a knitting needle being pushed between my kneecap and the lump on my tibia. This makes my leg stiffen up and i can feel my stride being affected because i 'slap' my foot down. The pain goes when I walk or stop running.

Not sure where to start with this one. Strengthening my quads? Physio? Orthotics? New trainers?

Not sure how much help my NHS GP will be, but thats the first port of call I think.

    to be continued...

  • If I just bang my knees everyday agains a hard surface, will that eventually kill the nerves to the point where it won't hurt when pressure is applied? I have had OSD on both knees since the fifth grade and currently 19. It took about three years of me in knee braces for the pain to actually go away when running. Now there is only pain when sitting, crawling or any type of pressure is on my knees.  Recently just got into MMA and my knees hurt A LOT even though we're on mats.
  • I have had OSD since 11 im now 24. All rest , medication and physio did nt work for me. However these ruind my younger days going from competing at national level in Athletics and Football to playing localy not due to performance but due to resting and just not being able to get back to full fitness in time to compete at that level. At 17 i gave up football and all sports(apart from fishing) due to my job being a plumber.

I was 24 4 months ago and felt like time was passing to quick were i had just left everything i loved to do dissapeare. So i started going down the local park to just dribble the ball take a few shots at goal. 1hr pain in my knees 7 years of rest working with correct knee pads and supports and 1 hour of running around was back to old times. 4 months on im still goin playing football 3 or 4 times a week i get pain often but it is getting better as im getting stronger im working through it regardless of the pain as it is getting less an less by the week so all i can say to those who get it keep battling the pain as in the UK Gps an specialist can not get rid and i found out the hard way by giving up what i love when i could have battled through the pain as other than pain performance is not affected maybe my knees will go by 40 but they may go anyway wether i play sports or not . Please dont go through the years of resting rest once for the prescribed period and wat ever treatment you get if it is not succesfull srugg it off get stronger in the leg area and be happy doing what you enjoy dont do what i did and find its for life and deal with it.

People may read this the wrong way  but all i want is people to realise reality and just not to let OSD ruin your sporting career at what ever level. Running round the feild with a footy and my m8s after work i fell better about myself and im not giving it up again OSD is not a problem when u make a 7 year sacrifice

  • I am getting the pain back in one knee again at a shade over forty eleven. Grief, I squealed like a stuck pig the other day when I knelt on it.

    Just don't kneel.

  • My 13-yr-old son was diagnosed with Osgood-Schlatter's a couple of months ago, so I've been researching this when I can to try to help him.  The article I found (see link below) has been quite helpful.  The part that was "new" to me in my searching basically discussed the mechanics of movement and how that influences healing.  They recommend seeing an orthopaedic physical therapist to analyze the way you walk, run, etc. to see what muscles are being overused, what muscles lack flexibility, etc. then design exercises to help correct what you're doing in order to relieve the stress from the knee.  Time for the growth plate to fuse well is needed, but the PT could significantly help those who should have "grown out of it by now". I found that info. to be interesting and new since I've read several articles and hadn't seen that perspective yet. ~Blessings to those searching for help

  • Runners World March 2013 have actually featured Osgood Schlatters. There is a clinically proven cure now called The Strickland Protocol. The 14 year old bot in the Runners World Article was cured during the third week of treatment.

    Their website link is http://www.osgood-schlatter-disease.com/

    Facebook page is https://www.facebook.com/osgoodschlattersdisease

I too suffered as a child, but you just had to get on with it back then image

  • I am 14 years old and i have had osgood schlatters for a year and a bit. I got osgood schlatters mainly from running. Does anyonw know of any sort of running band to reduce pain?

    Thanks

  • Try the Strickland Protocol - http://www.strickland-protocol.com/ its been featured in Runners World (March 2013 I think) and a young athlete aged 14 was cured in 3 weeks. BUT you have to stop sports for 3 weeks - could be the hardest part!

If you go to the site, then click on the faecbook link, Jenny Strickland will answer your questions - she was lead physio at the London Olympics.

Hope you feel better soon, Suzy
