Productive cough-AGAIN

I've gone down with yet another chesty cough...this is the 3rd one in 6 months. The previous 2 episodes took 3 weeks to clear.This one I've had for a week now.
Is this just luck of the draw, or can it be a sign of asthma?
My mother is asthmatic (developed about age 50)
I'm only in my early 40's, though, and have never suffered from recurrent respiratory problems before.
BTW-productive cough..yellow sputum.
I'm just thoroughly pissed off with it all. I missed a half marathon in March with a previous bout, and this time I've got another half marathon coming up in 12 days.
I think I'll go to the doc anyway, but wondered what forum docs/other folk think?
