The Conkwell Killer

Seeing as Avon Valley Runners are organising this one, I had better show willing and enter this one.

Anyone else 'up for it'???

  • I guess we could get a few out from Bath - esp as this is verging onto our Tuesday night training territory! What's your proposed route?
  • I think that the route is based on a loop around Winsley & Turleigh leading onto the K&A towpath before climbing up through Conkwell Woods from Dundas Aqueduct and back to the finish at the rugby club in Winsley.
  • The climb from Dundas is a good one! We oftn run from Bath Uni down Brassknocker to Dundas, up to Conkwell and along the ridge to Browns Folly and back via Bathford - one of our better sessions. I will make sure people are aware of it.
  • As I often see Ian Farr running events with his dog would I allowed to do this one with Fluffy ?
  • FP, I don't think that it will be problem, it might give Helga some canine company.
  • I am thinking of entering this.
Wrinty, you you have a map with the route marked, I'd like to get a preview of how hilly it is before entering :-)
  • Wrinty,

that was supposed to say 'do you' not 'you you'.
  • I have got one somewhere which I can drop around to you or post on the AVR website.

Anyway the course is roughly a figure of eight with a real bastard of a climb up the miners track through Conkwell Woods. The rest of the course is fairly flat (in comparrison).

Are you going to do the race in Boughton Gifford the following week?
  • Wrinty,

If you could drop one around that would be good. If you call around, I'm not in this weekend,I've got the Caerphilly Summits 31.

I'll see what I can find about the BG race on the web, but that's the same weekend as the Ridgeway 86(?)mile in 24hr event that I'm also considering entering so probably not. Although if I decide I'm not ready for the Ridgeway I may do it, I assume that the Boughton Gifford race is less than 80 miles !?

  • Boughton Gifford is a mere 5 miles.

I am doing British 10K this weekend, so probably see you late next week with the Conkwell stuff.
  • TY Wrinty.
Where can I get an entry form.
  • FP, I need to post a downloadable one on the AVR website, but other than that the organisers will be accepting universal entry forms and of course online entry is available through the RW website.
  • Wrinty,

How did the British 10K go?

    Colin
  • CW, I suffered from sleep deprevation as my three year-old son would not go to bed until 3am and my alarm went off at 6am. Struggled around in 39:51 (120th out of 15,000). Haile Gebreselassie had no such problems and won in 28:12.
  • Wrinty,

That's still in the top 1%, so I'd say it's a very good time
  • Is this a new race? I was trying to find out how fast/slow people were last year but can't find anything.
  • Valp - This is a new race, but is often used as a training route by AVR. I would expect the lead runners to finish in just under 50 minutes and the back markers up to an hour later.
  • Room for a small one?

I'm coming from South Oxfordshire so can any locals tell me which junction of the M4 will be the best one for me to leave at, as my geography of Wiltshire is absolutely terrible! Also, any hints of best route from M4 to race venue/HQ?

I expect to be one of the back markers, BTW! Is this a trail shoes job or something more substantial like fell shoes?
  • Creamcake, I suggest M4 J18 and taking A46 towards Bath and follow onto A4 towards Chippenham turning off at Batheaston to Bradford on Avon - there is a map on the Avon Valley Runners website to get you to the race HQ.

As for shoes, well of the eight miles: six are on the road, 1.5 on cinder towpath and .5 up up up dirt track. My own choice will be road shoes.

    Regards Wrinty
  • Ta for that Wrinty. See you Sunday!
  • Alas, I won't see any of you tomorrow.

Fate has conspired against me and I've not been feeling very well since yesterday.

I don't want to risk running tomorrow and either not finishing or making myself feel worse than I already do.

Thanks for your help re: directions Wrinty. There's always next year, although I wish I could be there tomorrow.

    Good luck all.
