full-suspension would be the way to go - if I could afford it. But I can't. I could if I waited another year but I'm not that patient! I can spend around £500 now, but not much more cos I need to get myself a wetsuit too (not for cycling, before anyone tries to be funny) and I'll need to replace two pairs of running shoes before my Oct mara. I also need a replacement badminton racket as I dinged the frame badly at the last club night, so that's another £150... and I've just paid out £250 for my level 2 sailing course so that I'm eligible to race this summer - which means I'm up to £1000 on sport stuff this month already and that's before entry fees and other bits and pieces of kit.

It's all getting a bit expensive really!

Jon - I looked at that option - but realised on some bikes it's considerably more expensive to buy and upgrade, so I think it's a question of deciding on priorities now and having the option of upgrading, rather than the intention of doing so - if I buy intending to upgrade I'm just going to be dissatisfied with the bike till I've done it.

I'm edging towards the GT Avalanche 1.0 - decent disc brakes, the fork's good though not lockout, relatively light (ok, not so good downhill, but at least I can lift the bl**dy thing onto the car rack), seems to be a good-quality frame... I can then replace the fork later if I need to but it'll do the business in the meantime. There were a couple more bikes I saw in the mbr comparison which I want to check out first, but so far that's the winner. The Rockhopper's ok, but I'd need to replace the stem and the seatpost immediately - the 15" frame isn't long enough for my back and arms, the 17" hasn't enough standover for my stumpy legs - and it doesn't have discbrakes. So the total cost of the new bike is going to be £650 before I can ride it, plus discbrakes at £100 each, totalling £850 - whereas the GT frame fits much better so I could ride it as is for £500... and if I replaced the fork for a lockout one, I could do so for less than £350...

I still haven't seen a Giant XTC 4 in the shop though, so I'm not closing off my options...

On another note - I don't think I've ever seen anyone as excited as the bloke in Evans yesterday... They certainly find enthusiastic staff - I thought he was going to wet himself talking about bikes and their bits!

snail - have you thought about a decent 2nd hand bike??.....usually some very good bargains in the back of MBR magazine - but as usual, check the bike out before buying.............

My local bike shop hires out bikes at the weekends and sells them at the end of the season.

This way you get a great bike cheap and fully servicesd with all worn parts replaced.

I'd honestly not really see the point in lockout. Are you planning on riding it up road on tarmac a lot?
  • Options
I wanted lockout on my MTB forks - especially when I was climbing.
(But that's probably 'cos they were cack)

lockout on the rear air shock makes a big differnece when climbing as you use less energy trying to stop the rear bouncing........and not just on road.......

Fair enough, but you're taking away the suspension on climbs. OK, so rigid is better and you're not bobbing about as you might if you were using an active unit, but... Would you lockout the front as well?

I leave the thread for a couple of days and look what happens - Jon lowers the tone AGAIN!

Out of interest - why? I can think of lots of reasons as to why you might splat in your pants... from going v fast to a too-bumpy ride to too many bananas for breakfast...

I've been keeping a half-hearted eye out for second-hand bikes but there doesn't really seem to be much happening - either way over budget or 17" frame... but I will keep looking.

Hopefully trying a couple of bikes next week so we'll see what happens... in the meantime I'm drooling over stuff I can't afford!

Yeah - too dark for my liking when the first series was on. It's grown on me though.

It had the same effect on me as going to see a Gerald Scarf exhibition when I was 6. gave (even) me nightmares!
  • Options
would have thought the sight of a 6-yr-old Jon gave the other exhibition-goers nightmares... ;-)

    Bit precocious, weren't you?!

As ever, any thread relating to mtb's gives me an excuse to visit one of my favourite websites and droool.... paulscycles.co.uk - pure mtb porn.

Lots of lovely bikes at v low prices. I bought my GT through this lot and it's been fab. They bikes are mostly 2004/2003 stock, but mtb technology (esp for hardtails) has moved on so little in the last couple of years that the heavy discounts only really mean you haven't got this years paint job.
