  • Helen,

Good to hear from you. We commence our journey home in a few hours expecting to arrive at freezing Heathrow at 7am. From 90+Deg to freezing is not a good idea especially as we have no warm clothes with us.

The UK weather/travelling situation does not sound to good but it will be great to see family.

  • Tomorrow is the day of the foot operation. I need to be at Guy's Hospital by 7.30 in the morning. I might be allowed out late afternoon evening but I suspect they'll keep me in overnight. I am having a general anesthetic {spelling!} and they will have to show me the ropes with the crutch(es). Anyway I'll post when I get home.

Two weeks bed rest. I've got a lap-top wi-fi ready so might be playing a lot of internet chess!

  • Got to admissions at 7.15 and was told that I was second on the list but the first op was scheduled for 3 hours. Waited 4 hours and was then told the other op was taking longer than planned. Sarah had to go home for taxi duties. Having not eaten since mid/late Sunday evening I finally went in about 3.30. Long time in recovery and got on to the ward about 7.30 although I was only under for 30 mins. I saw the registrar in the recovery room but not sure if I remember everything he said!

Anyway one of the doctors came to see me mid morning and we talked it all through. They had found some damage to the tendon as expected. They removed a small "Os" bone, removed some scar tissue and stitched the remaining bits of tendon back together again. I am to go back in two weeks so they can have a look and then put on a more robust plaster. The good news is that they have agreed that this only needs to be on for a further 3 weeks making 5 in total. That means I can go back to work when I hoped ie in time for Sport Relief.

We discussed long term recovery and she said it should fully heal and that it would cope with any amount of walking I wanted to do in the future. We talked about running......she said she could see no problem with me running up to about 10 miles but thought that Marathon running and training might put too much pressure on it.  She didn't rule out the concept of me trying to do it and if it tore again having a second operation. I pushed her more but she said that although she was a runner herself she wouldn't like to commit to a dfinite answer on any limits to my future running. She suggested I speak to a specialist sports physio.image.

I then had a visit from a hospital physio who took me through some excercises I can be doing over the next two weeks. She also showed me how to use crutches and I even tried them out on a flight of stairs. That meant I was free to go. After a spot of lunch and a long waitg for a porter Sarah took me home in a Taxi. Had a restful afternoon and waiting for dinner at 7!

I sort of knew they wouldn't really want me running marathons but it was not nice to hear it. It did somewhat take the gloss off what I think has otherwise been a successful two days

  • Hey Howard it sounds like it all went to plan and hopefully you wont be too bored sitting at home for the next month or so. Take lots of care and hurry up and play your first chess move so we can get started.

    :¬D

  • Great - two games under way.
  • Have a look at this sent to me by friends on another thread:

    Howards card

BTW the Yoda referred to, believe it or not, is me!

  • Ran 3 miles in 24 mins on Sunday. Unheard of for me to run at this time of year, never mind putting out that sort of pace! - altho, .. I admit Hulk had something to do with it....  women, eh?

Sorry haven't caught up with the last couple of pages yet... will do, but as you can see, I can't get on here from work?? - Job is intense, and structured, and we're well looked after. Liking it, even tho no spare time. Our systems are down this afternoon, that's why I'm here. lol.

Catch y'all later.   Hope y'all fit n well?

  • Right.. caught up now. Congrats on the operation, Howard..... Now maybe you'll listen to MY marathon schedule, instead of those silly miles that everyone else seems so keen on?... I'd stick to 10ks this year tho, to be honest..... well, if it was me... I'd stick to Halfs... but don't do as I do...... image
  • Thanks Ged.

Glad the job seems to be ok at the moment.

  • Very belated Happy Birthday, Howard. I have been in a house in Orkney with as yet no telephone or internet. Glad you are recovering from your session with butchers.

Only 10 weeks until Boston but I am at the stage where I am wondering why I put myself through this pain. The very cold weather does not help but hopefully the sun will shine soon.

  • Sorry, wrong person. Old age and running is obviously affecting me!
  • I don't need another birthday just yet!

Had my plaster changed and foot checked this morning. All looks good with very minimal swelling left. Stitches all taken out and back home. Plaster comes off completely in three weeks time.

  • Orthapeadic appointment tomorrow - hopefully the plaster can come off and start to put some wieght on my left foot.
  • Hope you're on the mend Howard, take it easy and you'll get back onto the road soon.

     Lots of best wishes

    :¬D

  • Plaster off, weight bearing and walking quite well but not too far at the moment. Not planning on running just yet and probably not racing till the end of the year if that.
  • Back to work this afternoon after six weeks off image !
  • Ah but good news that you're on the mend image

    :¬D

  • Hi Gang, sorry I've been away for so long.. but complete life changes again for me. Happily, it doesn't mean I run any more than usual. Nevertheless, a week last sunday ran 3 and a half miles, and last sunday, I ran 5 miles, in a slow 47 mins, but just going through the motions, and the mid mile of that was on heavy grass banks...

I hope to run Tewksbury Half, which I think is May9th, isn't it? - and guess I won't be up to pb pace by then, but if I continue as I am should get in under 2 hours. lol

Anyone else but Ian running at all these days? - How's the foot Howard?

My job is getting harder by the day, and teaching starts in earnest on Monday... is that near Salisbury?

My girlfriend situation is on a changeabout too, and I recently moved into another room in Bristol, with the added expense of my wales home. .. Guess it will have to go... apart from some respite from the job here, there seems little point in me living there any more, and job prospects out there are grim.

Rest up gang. You know it makes sense.
  • Foot well on the mend but I still can't walk too far yet. It's still a case of rest and physio. I'm doing heel raises to strengthen the tendon and stretches to keep everything loose around my calf and ankle.

Hope the job/house/girlfriend situation all works out Ged.

I've just finished my first four days as a freelance. The money is good but the work is sporadic (two days a week) until hopefully I'm allowed to work in the BBC again.

  • Good luck to you too Howard with the workload.

I should run today, but too much else to do just now.

Did 5 miles last sunday, and 3.5 the sunday before... don't want to overdo it....

  • Haven't been in touch much, and it sounds like I missed a lot. Glad to hear your operation went well, Howard. Sounds like all change for you, Ged.

All change for me too, as work on the new house is about to start in earnest. Kitchen planning yesterday and now on to bathrooms. Am getting some running in, 1:55 for half marathon last week and 5k planned for Wednesday.

Need to keep this up better...

watched Paula win the new york mararthon the other year in her comeback race but I guess it is a hot race with temps in the USA when I went to Ariozna it hit 120c
  • Hey Dinda, Welcome. The year we did it, in 2005, the expected temperatures were between 11 and 17 degress. we got a very unseasonal 22-24 that day, which suited me nicely, but not many others.

Hey Gang, I ran 3.36 miles on Sunday in 28.10.. felt ridiculously sluggish the first mile, and only when the mile marker beeped on the Garmin did I realise I'd run it in 7.11.. where did THAT come form?

First day teaching was a bit of a mare today, but got great feedback from the students anyway... hmm, I guess giving the impression of being laid back relaxes them into a false sense of security....

    Ged56

in 2005 I ran the Blackpool mararthon in 28c very hot indeed training for Chester mararthon now
  • I ran that Blackpool too. I suspect i was still suffering from de-hydration symptoms by New York.... It took 6 weeks before I felt normal -ish again after that criminal Blackpool run.

I used to live near Chester.. not run the Marathon, but my experience of their Halfs many years back were that they weren't very well organised, nor good value... a poor quality T-shirt with a costly entry fee. Perhaps they've improved? - Good Luck!

3rd day teaching.. had a dream day.. best not get complacent tho...

yes at that blackpool I got sunburnt round my neck moved on from Blackpool now bit boring to hilly races mainly done Eyam and Buxton halfs and they are killers
  • Hey gang, I bought myself a book over the weekend, called 50-50, about Dean Karnazes running 50 Marathons, in 50 states, in 50 Days, culminating in the 2006 NY marathon, which he completed in 3h and 30 seconds... hmmm... reckons he never got so much as a leg cramp.

Now don't get the wrong idea.... I just hoped it might inspire me to run maybe 30 miles in one go... he reckons he is just an average guy, with a lot of supporters.... and as they said in animal farm... some people are more average than others... the guy used to pop marathon distance for his sunday run... and had run several 200 mile ultras....
  • No Ged, no, you really don't want to!

I once set off on a fell run, just to see how long I could run for without stopping. Was expecting it to last about 4/5 hours... I slipped, fell, dislocated my shoulder. Popped it back in and was still running after 6 hours... could have gone on much longer if it wasnt for the shoulder... did about 56 kms that day... Still wonder what would have happened if I had not fallen. It was wet and windy too so not ideal conditions. Once you start running and are planning on running that far or that long, you just get into some sort of trance and keep going! Quite and extraordinary feeling... I now have silly ideas about a 12 hour time trial on the bike...

Glad to hear the new job is going so well... what are you teaching and where?

  • Hi Han... I know what you mean about trance on long runs.... And of course, you KNOW that I wouldn't be running in anything other than warm and dry weather....

I'm teaching the RiO patient management software system in AWP Trust of the NHS to all staff dealing with Mental Health patients.. I fit right in..... in about 8 bases, from Devizes, to Salisbury to Bristol. I get travel time and expenses, so altho the car has been a pain, the last tankful averaged 57mpg, so can be quite lucrative... Have been at the teaching for 2 weeks so far... and it's tough, with a lot to cover, but do-able. There are 4 difference course options, and they can be a mish-mash of modules, with some overlap, so nothing really new in any course, just some more in-depth than others. It took us trainers 9 days to learn what we need to teach in less than 2, so you see what we're up against.

Good luck with the time trial!

Btw, I ran 6 miles in a slow 57 mins yesterday, so not up to pace for the Tewks Half around May 9.... I guess I need a task master on a bike....
