I am seriously eyeing this race up for either 2006 or 2007 - I'd prefer to do the "down" year if poss.
I am hoping to be in 2:20 marathon shape by then and I am an "enduring" type of marathoner (i.e. the longer the race the better I am), so I'd hope to do fairly well. What sort of time should I be looking for? And would it be worth my while contacting the organisers for assistance or do they have 2:20 runners coming out their ears?
Also, can you tell me more about the course? Is it tarmac or dirt track or a mix? How bad are the hills? Are energy drinks provided? Cups or bottles? Any advice on how the elite ultra runners train?
Don't ask much do ya Pants....think the down was this year, but not sure it makes any difference with this distance. But I'll let those that know answer your questions.
2;20 marathon, you should be looking at least for a silver "sub 7:30" put it this way the winners fin in around 5:30, so you wont be the quickest out there!
Its a tar very hilly route! hills are quite serious! you get energade, always in small plastic sachets, aswell as coca cola, in plastic runners cups, aswell as water and lots to eat! bananas, chocolates, potatoes you name it!
Hi Guys Just dropping in to see what you are all up to! Won't be there in 2006 have other plans mainly centred around the Himilaya Stage 100 in October but will be back for 2007. Will keep an eye on this thread in case I change my mind!
Manged my first 10K since Comrades yesterday, have been running again for a week now, speed starting to creep back up! Will concentrate on 10K speed until mid August when I better start doing some long stuff again as I have two marathons in October. 2007....maybe 2006...!!!
Glad to hear you guys are running again Gobi and DD. Good luck on your first run Slow Duck.
I am running a half marathon in Pretoria on Saturday. No running for me today and tomorrow as this was a last minute thing and I am trying to get rid of some minor niggles before Saturday. Did 16 miles on Sunday,so will probably take it easy.
Well cold getting better, will leave running again till Sunday, then go for a nice LSD and it will be slow ;-) Need to start marathon training as have one in October.
Yes Grant, I am doing the Running Free 21K. I have been building up the length of my long run and did 26K on Sunday. I will cut back a bit by doing the 21 and then go for 18 miles next week.
Have you done the Running Free before? If so,I have a few questions.
Maybe we can meet up before the race for a quick howzit. I run for Nigel although I live in Heidelberg. Which club are you with?
I reckon that the UP is definately easier to recover from and probably has the easier second half all those downhills in the later stages of the down run really hammer you legs. The major up hills on the UP run are over by just after half way, and polly shorts is a great excuse to walk for 3K with 10K to go! So for me I prefer the UP Run.
Secondly its easier to get to the start on the up run , less traffic congestion
Portaloo, I've found that the up run to be much easier on the legs in terms of recovery. However, if you are having a bad race, I've found that the last few kms on a down run is a little less hard to endure than on an up...(done 4 downs and 2 ups...)

I must be crazy to even think about 2006 when I've yet to recover from 2005...
Still, I know that I will be there again next year...Six done, four to go...
Hoping to do my first post-Comrades run tomorrow. My body has been VERY unhappy with the way it was treated on 16 June...
you know you want to :¬)
