Barnsley 10K

I have just started running and want to do the Brnsley 10km. Can anyone advise on whether this would be a good run to do as my first! Is it a difficult course?

Never done it but thinking of doing it as my first race for many years. Stopped racing while going back to university and then having a baby.

Really into the running again and getting the racing bug. Up till last weekend longest run 50 mins but have now broken the hour barrier.

If I was you I would do it regardless as its only your first race and you can only improve.

The course boasts 'PB potential' and indeed many people, including me, did get a PB last year. The course is scenic in a Yorkshire sort of way, and is well organised etc.

Sounds good to me I have persuaded my brother that this race would be good for a bit of family rivalry. He lives in Huddersfield so it would be a good race to do on one of my trips home.

ali cat - I too live in Huddersfield.

Have done about 5 10K's but yet to break 60m. This course offers PB's so aim to do sub 60.

I am training now for the GNR so this will be my first race after that (if I've recovered!)

Well it's a reasonable trek from Bolton but the "dash" was very similar to say Dewsbury in the out and back style course -just very well attended and decent organisation -so Barnsley it is

S10 Blades - Yes you do. Once you have sent your details online everything else works the same way except that you usually get immediate confirmation that your entry has been accepted. It is sometimes more expensive - depends if the organisers absorb the RW fee or pass it on to you!

Thanks for the Info Roy, i have signed up for this now and as you stated it was more expensive, i think i need to join a club if this is to be a regular thing and save the £2.00 of each time

What is the best route from M62/A1 intersection ?

Christopher - we have tried to get to use the school field for parking but have been advised that the drainage is poor and people could well end up getting stuck, so parking will be on local streets, being mindful of residents. Sorry about that but I can't magic up a car park!:-)

Water will be available at 3 miles and at the end. We were slightly taken aback by the large amount of runners entering on the day last year. We had budgeted for just over 400 and had over 600. We'll provide water for 700 competitors, the race entry limit this year.

We'll send out numbers and other details re. parking / refreshments / changing etc. closer to the event.

Rachelina - the last runner last year came in around 80 mins, so I'm sure you won't be last. They got one of the biggest cheers of the day!

Royston - along Midland Rd, past coking plant, left at crossroads, down past Ellis Laithe fold, out to Chevet, back towards Notton then up the hill towards Royston.

What is the best route from M62/A1 intersection ?

Most straightforward way is along M62, down M1, off at J38, up through Haigh, right at x-roads, down through Mapplewell, left down to A61, right then sharp left into Royston.

There may be a better route but I don't travel that way much. Try www.theaa.com and the routefinder.

Hi Barnsleyrunner, I am entering this for my first 10k and am a bir worried by peoples descriptions of the "killer hills" on the race evals fromlast year! Is it very bad/suitable for a (slow) beginner?

hare...this run is new to me too. Flat races are nice but we should accept the challenges of the odd hill occasionally !
My home run Bolton has a couple of hills but nothing too serious. Variety and all that !

Seriously, Barnsley AC.

The hills aren't too bad - there's only 2 of them and they're fairly short (but steep). I guess most people were around 30 secs off pb pace last year, so it's not a slow course without being lightening fast.

We market the race around local gyms and health centres, so we're aiming at a wider audience than just the usual club runners who do these sort of events.

A slow beginner will become a quicker beginner with this race:-)

I agree with Chris's comments about hills. Flat's are OK but you soon look for a challenge and conquering a hill, especially on an unfamiliar course is a great feeling regardless of your time. My daughter has just done her first 10K race at Bramham Park - the furthest she'd ever run (well jogged) and was over the moon that she made it up the hills without stopping!
