"given that you run and cycle, you'll get cancer a lot sooner than sedentary people (statistically speaking), so the next one you put in your mouth might well be the one that causes a cell to mutate, and leads to your death."
Glad you reminded me as I really hadnt a clue I was killing myself. On that pleasant thought im off to bed.
In terms of training benefit it makes no difference if you go out to La Santa or take a week off and train here. Personally I'm less likely to get distracted at La Santa, there is nothing there so you can't skip training to go shopping etc.... and you have the advantage of coaches, bike mechanic and physio on site if you want them.
But I had just as good a training week staying with my grandparents getting wind battered on the Yorkshire Moors.
Candy "i don't drink for months at a time" - yeah, then look what happens when he drinks just half a shandy! ;-)
I'd be quite interested in La Santa. I missed out on my running club going and by all accounts it sounded well worth it. Can't remember the cost, does anyone know? Is it an all-inclusive cost ie all the food, training, physio, competitions included etc etc.
Jo what about these courses that are advertised in the tri mags? I don't know anything about them, but there seem to be a few.
Lindi - I agree - I'd like the benefits of some coaching and not having to work, do housework, shop, clean....and having a physio and mechanic too would be great.
Sezz - depends on what you want. The long distance tri week is 190 euros, then there are accommodation and flights and food. I'm going to ring them today and see what the accommodation costs are like. Flights from Scotland are £150, so bound to be cheaper from England. I'll post later if I get them, although they may be shut as it's an english holiday.
Barly, as a 20-30 a day smoker of 25 years, stopping two years ago was the best thing I ever did, the only downside that I have found is if you see a bueatiful girl then she picks up a fag it is really really off putting. But at least you know they will go all wrinkly in a few years:)
Seriously you just have to decide to do it and understand that it is not depriving yourself as Candy has said. I still get the occasional urge but after a few seconds the thought just gives me the heebies. Set a date and just don't think about it, do it.
I stopped smoking 5 years ago and never think about smoking now unless I'm very drunk, which isn't very often.
Carl - you're right though - you have to decide for yourself and having all these people telling you to do it doesn't help. I'm not telling you to - it's your choice. I'm just giving another example of someone who has done it.
I expect all these english folk are on holiday. I'm in scotland, and not at work today, but it isn't a holiday.
Sezz - Flights are £100 - £200 depending on where you fly from. One bed appartment, which sleeps up to 3 people is from £487 for the first week of Jan.
Giving up drinking is great - it's like being a teenager again when you go back to it, although thankfully with enough money not to resort to Thunderbirds!
sezz / debbo - unless you are seriously strapped for cash i'd recommend not going all-inclusive. the food in the local village is really good plus the onsite supermarket is very reasonably priced and you'll get a lot more choice.
btw as you know carl i stopped smoking 18 months ago. i don't even get the occasional urge to smoke when drunk anymore (although i do get the occasional nightmare where i've started smoking again then wake up in a panic and realise i was only dreaming!)
but you have to do it when you are ready. people telling me how bad it was for me had no effect at all for 15 years or so!
I found Alan Carr really helpful - I stopped after reading it. For some reason he hasn't helped with my fear of flying though!!
M - I wouldn't go all inclusive anyway. I like to prepare my own food.
Lindi - thunderbirds were never my thing! I used to drink martini and lemonade or vodka and lime. Yuck!! I get drunk now on a glass of wine - very cheap to run!
If the apartments are that price I better find some chums to go with. Mr D doesn't want to go.
we all started drinking with neat vodka because we thought our parents wouldn't smell it off us. Falling in the door or sleeping in the front garden was never going to give it away.
when i was 15 or 16 i once decided to prove that i wasn't p!ssed by coming in and making a shake out of milk and ice cream in the blender. unfortunately i was too p!ssed to remember to put the lid on the blender when i switched it on.
