Bryan. I'll be starting this one with Hippo, if she posts the form! You should have got my entry some time ago. I think i put it would take me 12 hours to complete.
Vane House is good but I recommend booking early. Accomodation in Osmotherley usually books up fast for July. Hippo - You lost your sense of distance after last attempt. Vane House only a mile from start. Duck Girl - I'll be going back through York on way home. Will have one spare seat if you can't arrange anything before the event. Don't go to Ruswarp. If you want a train attempt to get to Scarborough for return journey. Plenty of people going that way. Ruswarp well off beaten track. Elephant Feet - No doubt we have your application but doubt very much if that's your real name.
My application is in a few weeks ago, enjoyed it SO much last year, even though I didn't quite finish.
I will have some space in my car, so if anyone wants to arrange transport, i don't mind leaving mine at the finish, if someone can give me lift to the start, and then I'll run them back to their car(s) or vice verse.
Seem to remember that there was a York Forum social on the friday last year, wonder if we can arrange that again, dossed down on someone's floor (yes, I do remember whose floor it was, but names witheld to protect the guilty)
Can't see much prospect of escaping for two weekends in a row, and I think the lycra-clad-bum quotient (and my prospects of finishing within the time allowed) are better at Trailwalker.
If I remember correctly last year the real runners were wearing considerable less than Lycra - there was at least one young lady who we thought would have an interesting sun-burn pattern.
Decision made - I won't be doing this year's race.
But I will be doing next year's. And I will complete it.
I'd already decided it will be my 'big race' for 2007, and a weekend out in the wilds of Wales has reminded me how wonderful it is to push yourself over inhospitable terrain.
Have a good 2006 race everyone, and see you next year...
I'm pretty sure that I posted mine. Looking forward to it.
Does anyone have any thoughts on specific training for this? I was thinking over working my way up to 35 mile training waddles over Rombald's moor/Ilkley/Rivock Edge/Otley Chevin. Will this recapitulate the mud and climbs?
Hi all, After an unsuccessful attempt at tackling the route last year (had to stop shortly after the Blue Man-i-th'-Moss due to an ankle injury) I was thinking of giving this a go this year. Unfortunately I'm not the fastest person in the world. Do people think it's possible to complete in the time if you do it at a fairly brisk walk/run? Cheers V
V, i think Hippo and i will be doing a walk/run if you want to join us and if she has posted the form! I am sure there will be much more walking than running, on my part anyway! I don't think we are too bothered about finishing in the time though.
Received an entry form from a Ruth of Stourbridge.
Velouria Theoretically it is possible to walk it. 42 miles in 12 hours = 3.5mph average. Hippo is going to complete this year start with her at 04:00 and, barring accidents you will both finish.
Elephant feet - thanks for the offer, that's really kind of you. Walking most of it with a run here and there sounds like something I could cope with! But I'd be worried about holding you back - have you guys done a lot of races like this?
Im not Ruth nope thats not my name and where the h*ll is Stourbridge
Now then Velouria I dont think i ran ENOUGH last year-cos im so scared of the downhills it slows me up so this year-i will be running as much a poss at the beginning-and especially on that rail track
running-well-I plod actually and no, i havent done many races like this just didnt finish this 2 years ago would you like to read my rpeort (mwhahahahahahahahahaha)
I am glad to hear about the running lots at the beginning hippo, don't think i'll be up to much towards the end! Hope i can keep up with you this time.
V, i have done something similar but that was more of a hike and i just ran bits of it on the flat and gentle downhills. Hippo on the other hand is always doing these mad things :-)
BTW, how slow is your slow? I suspect you might be faster than me.
It was the downhills that slowed us too. We'd expected to be able to make up some time there, but the ground underfoot wasn't stable enough. If the bogs had been wet, we'd have been even slower.
The old railway bit is definitely runnable, but that's where I had my "WTF am I doing here?" moment and couldn't get my head in gear for running.

But I could be persuaded ...

Haggis and I weren't hanging around, and if we hadn't stopped early we'd have taken 13.5-14 hours to complete.
I'm not doing Trailwalker now. Tempted by this, very tempted. Wibble!
it is more like 2 mph terrain
or 1mph if you are a scaredy hippo going downhill
