Looking to do my first marathon and thinking about this or rome or Copenhagan. Can't find how long they allow to finish on the sight. Is it very fast or will there be some company around the 5 hour mark? Will there be much support round the course or a lonely slogg at the back?
ptricia, Rotterdam will be my second marathon. Cutoff time is 5 1/2 hours. I dont know how many runners there will be around the 5 hour mark. Enough I reckon. Entries are 10.000 max.
I wanted to do Rome because I was invited (i.e. free entry and VIP treatment...) but I cant do it because of work. I have been told its very hard on the legs though! You rn mainly on Roman roads, i.e. massive cobbles. I was in Rome earlier in the year and it hurt just walking on them, let alone run 26.2 miles!
Rotterdam is a fast course, all on tarmac, with no elevations at all.
I know some people on here have done Copenhagen, which is fast and good I think?
The Dutch are good spectators, but not sure how many people will be spread out along the course.
I just did New York as my firts marathon and I do think no other marathon will beat that as far as spectators goes!
Copenhagen is good ptricia, flat and pretty good support. The course is 3 different loops though (1 and 3 are very similar) and the crowds get a bit sparse on the 2nd loop. However advantages:
easy to enter via website with guaranteed entry (no ballot) no time cut off nice city good atmosphere and stress free not too big (<5000 runners) wx should be nice
Don't think CPH will rate with Rotterdam but I did it last year as my 1st marathon and it was ideal.
Finally got that chip off your running shoe the H - about time!
Hanneke - I do think their international pricing structure is a bit dodgy to say the least, I almost ressurect my Belgian roots, but in the end I could not be bothered, my parents are hopeless for these things. Groetjes, Bart
Registered 2 days ago. Tried to use my NY chip number but it said that it didn't recognise the number that was on it. Maybe there are different systems in US and in Europe?
BTW nice to see so many people from NY on this thread!
Copenhagen was my first marathon, done on virtually zero training due to injury (ITB). Planned only to run 25k but after 30k felt okay and finished it. Like the atmosphere of Copenhagen more small scale, more a runners event, hardly charity runners. The course is very twisty not fast, a bit out of town, back into the city again, around the castle a bit and finish along the sea front again. Lot of change in scenary and supports at different spots but much less compared to other marathons. Remember Denmark is a small country!
What would you guys in the know suggest. If the whole family goes to Rotterdam, where would you go in Holland or close by afterwards for a holiday....anything in particular we should see or consider? Remember this is in leiu of Cape Town, so needs to be a fantastic alternative.
fitnfortysomething you could try Blijdorp zoo it's not bad for a family trip and only 10 mins or so on a the number 3 tram from the central station, still not much of a choice compared to Cape Town! but my 4 year old loved it.
Fitn40, when I have a bit more time in the near future I will send you an itinerary. Blijdorp Zoo is great but there is an awful lot more! How old are the children?
Paul, I have noooooo idea how we all suddely are running in Rotterdam... no, I am definitely not on a commiccion with the organisers... half the people from the 'other' thread have signed up as well! ;¬D
But they are reluctant to leave their fave Superheroes home... so I will be 'double threading' again!
morning all, Thought i would flit over to this side to see what is going on. Fitn40 if you find any nice family accomodation let me know as i would be taking family as well. Can't decide whether to go straight to Rotterdam or commute though. Guess it will depend on prices.

There's a lot of support on course, although there is a stretch through the park I think where it's a bit lonely for about 4-5 miles.

Waiting for the right moment to breach it with Rupert that this is the Spring marathon I am doing, not London...
Then I will sign up.
Ok, I will, off now!
