  • Dont feel bad, I did a lazy 8
  • thanks Mercury - i just to get this flippin' thing done so I can get a life again and do sane things like 10k, 10miles and halfs etc...plus work, sleep, socialise , all that stuff
  • AAAAaaaaaarrrrrrgggggghhhhh!

That cry of frustration would have actually taken far more energy to utter than I have available right now.

  • Did a good 10 today in 1.24. Tired this afternoon and can't wait for bedtime. Trying to eat better too. Was missing meals because I was running so I'll load up this week. Only 6,4 and 2 to go. Looking forward to it with some apprehension thrown in.
I'll be at the expo Saturday afternoon.
    Happy easter everyone,
    DC
  • Well you all ran much much farther than me. 80 mins on my cross trainer in lieu of a run. It's not the same however.
  • gymbunny, its all tapering from here, nothing you can do will change how much effect your training has had on your body

    Don't worry, its ONLY a marathon !!
  • Thankfully, I feel about 50% better today. I felt so down yesterday - kept pretty much healthy all winter then picking up that sore throat. It has been knocking around the family for a couple of weeks and tends to be a 7 day thing - so coming down with it yesterday had me really p'd off. However, it looks like I am already on the up.

Not intending doing any more running this week though, just in case.

  • WRover, my sympathies, I've been off it all week. Fed up now. Off to hunt down a chemist on a Bank Holiday Monday! - great timing!
  • sorry to hear you guys are feeling down, hopefuly some rest this week and you will be ready for next Sunday.

Gymbunny-hope some rest helps you too. I still get shin splints even after all this training and never know when they are going to strike, so should be interesting to see if I get them next sunday.

I had a short little 2 mile run today, 4 or 5 miles tomorrow then rest until marathon. Getting nervous now !

Anyone going to run with the pacers ? I am thinking about the 9 min/mile guys but dont know yet.
  • Hey, folks!

I too have been with an upper respiratory chest infection. I went to Brussels for the weekend and the cough/tickly throat came on Friday/Saturday. I got to the doctor this morning and he said I should be fine - viruses hang around 7 days and are then out of your system. He also gave me some drugs to make the syptoms less annoying (decongestant, cough suppressant, etc.).

Brussels is incredible, especially the food! I highly recommend all the stereotypical things they are known for - chocolate, mussels, and waffles!! YUMMY! Just storing up some extra calories for the marathon! Hang in there everybody, we're almost there!
  • It looks like half of us are doing brilliantly and the other half are fair falling apart. It's probably normal.

Hope everyone feels better soon so that we have plenty of time to get excited rather than scared (which I still am in case I have to defer).
  • I am hoping to stick with the 9 minute mile pacers, I tend to lose the pace around 5/6 miles which is annoying
  • It sounds like everyone's being extra sensible. The bottom line is that we've done all the hard work so missing a few runs this week won't hurt. Best to go out there on Sunday feeling rested, well fed, strong and hopefully everyone virus free by then.

I plan an hour on the xtrainer later today -assuming that we don't have too many visitors in to see Mr ST's progress!!! We've had them every day and its lovely to see all our friends but oh, all that tea making......

Calf is feeling so much better, I can't pinpoint the sore spot any more, but going to continue being 'sensible' and stay off the runs until SUNDAY. NEXT SUNDAY ALREADY.

Yellowdog, I'm pleased you liked my city. I think its great, and beautiful. Shame you weren't well enough to sample the run possibilities as well as the great food.
  • ST- I was staying near the Grand Place and still ventured out for a 35 minute jog on Saturday evening. The parks and buildings are beautiful. Being from the states makes seeing buildings that are centuries old even more impressive!
  • I've just changed my hotel reservation. Same hotel, same type of room on a 'last minute offer' but without breakfast £69. Cancelled the previous £122 booking and will find breakfast somewhere with the spare £53.

  • I'm hoping to run with the 9-min mile pacers too if I can find them after the start. Because I put down 4.15 as my anticipated time I'll probably start near the back and the pacers will be well in front.
I'll be pleased to get on with it now.

  • Had a nice 12 mile run on Sunday, wasnt prepared for it, didnt feel much like it, but managed it all the same. Usual thing once i got going i felt so much better. Still find it hard to run at a slower pace when on my own.
only 2 runs left + 2mile light jog on Saturday according to schedule.
Im hoping to run with 9min/mile but think i put 4:30 on entry so even harder to find them.
I so want to get to London, only 3 days of work, off Friday so chill out hopefully.
Just need a couple of good nights sleep before Saturday as im sure i wont sleep well that night (have a feeling that may be similar for most).
Can it really be only 5days 2hrs & 13mins from now.
I really must start packing my bag. Ive got to make decision on trainers before i go, think it will be the asics as lighter on my feet (dont want to take both as only want to take a small bag if possible.)
Happy tapering, remember nothing over done this week, we have done all the training we need, lets relax & enjoy the build up to the BIG day.
    see you Sunday hopefully.
Any further plans on meeting Saturday? I dont know London so no good asking me, but give me directions & ill find it
Ima at Expo Sat about 1pm, there for 2-3hrs before getting bused back to hotel
  • Go away you stupid sore throat (and other associated viral symptoms) - it's not big and it's not clever.

Felt a bit better yesterday morning, but still ran out of energy and felt chilly and achy by about 5pm.

The plan is no training this week at all and not caring about the time on Sunday - just want to be healthy enough with the energy to get round.

Travelling up to London with wife and daughter Saturday morning. My plans involve expo about 12 - hotel by 3 and, well that's it really. Their plans involve Harrods...........

  • WR- I'm with you. I just want the cough, sore throat, etc. to be under control for Sunday. Anyone think it would be awful if I skipped today's run? I'm thinking it could be better for me to rest.
  • dont think it would make any difference yellowdog, you have done enough already, rest is best for sure
  • Had a few days off before Easter and the runs, though slow after the Reading Half were OK, Saturday's 8 was done at 9.15 pace.
Loads of aches and pains in my legs and feet for some reason? Like to think it's my body screaming for more miles! Could be a result of running my new shoes in - though they are the same as my 2 previous pairs (they look very, very white).
A 3, 4 & 2 left and then that 4x10K run on Sunday. Going to expo tomorrow and a mate has offered to run me up to London Bridge for 7am on Sunday so I can now cancel my hotel booking.
Sleep eludes me at moment and had my last alcohol intake before the day. Getting a bit nervous.
  • morning all!

*ppphhhsssssst ppphhhsssssst" - I knew i'd need that disinfectant spray again!!

Thankfully no signs of illness on this side. I hope everyone with aches, pains and scratchy throats is feeling better!! It's only Tuesday which leaves a whopping 120 hours of recovery time - i'm 100% confident that you'll be OK!

I had a nice n gentle 12 miler on Sunday - got up bright n early to simulate race day - went through everything that i'll need to do this Sunday - and it was all OK - just need to remember to sleep on Saturday night!

On the weather front - I'm receiving conflicting reports on what's going to be happening on Sunday but i can DEFINATELY CONFIRM that there will be weather - good news all round!

  • Just saw my boss who is also running and he's had a debilitating 48hr lurgy (head, stomache - both ends etc!!!) and looks awful - wouldn't allow me anywhere near him and he's now gone home so as to not infect me...bless. Oh my G**, he NEVER does sick so it must be bad!
  • Hi guys, not posted on this thread before but have been reading it and have been with you all on your ups and downs, just a bit post shy! The taper madness is taking over, I am now deliberating about wearing nearly new shoes or not. Have done about 50 miles in them. The trainers i have been using and are thoroughly broken in have been fine but i have just got new orthotics for them and they now make the trainers a little bit small when my feet get warm. So do i (a) wear my new trainers which are half a size bigger but not fully broken in and i got a little blister on a three mile run this morning!or do i (b) revert to the old faithfuls with my old orthotics in that dont support my arches as much but i managed 20 miles in them ok? Help!! Any ideas i'm driving everyone mad with the trainer issue and taper tantrums !
  • I too am "running-in" new shoes - they'll have done about 30 miles by Sunday morning. I've been told that this ought to be OK as they're the same as my old ones...but I may change my mind on the day.

Guys and Gals - any one else out there whose body appears to be falling apart? Today I've developed a back ache, calf ache, right hamstring ache and wobbly tummy - all psycosomatic I'm sure but bliddy annoying. Also now worrying about how to get to expo tomorrow pm...to drive, to tube...? Have just gone out and bought my wine gums for the day so that's one thing less to forget!
  • Backe-ache, calf ache, yes. Other than than, I'm sleeping 10hrs a night and feeling full of energy during the day. Going mad cleaning the house and hoping that'll help keep me fit with being off running. Also terrified that I'll have dropped too much fitness with my calf enforced 'no-run' taper. Afraid of eating too much and putting on lbs, and afraid of eating too little and not filling the tanks!! Packed my bag today. Tied my winegum bag onto my bottle belt to see how it felt. Had to make some adjustments as it jiggled about too much but I think I have it now.(wine gum bag in its previous life was a washingpowder tablet holder!!)
Tried and tested socks, worn on 2 long runs, washed, folded and packed in almost new shoes (50miles done), and still not decided on which shorts to wear. Decisions decisions.
    Roll on sunday.
  • Welcome NJ.
If you can run pain free in old orthotics and shoes I'd stick with that. If not, you need compeed blister plasters.
I'm losing my voice. My throat isn't sore and I feel fine but I think it's a post-viral thing from weeks ago when I was really unwell and took to my bed for 3 days. People think I'm ill and are muttering about the wisdom of doing a marathon when I'm not well. I'll just have to do well on Sunday to show them.

I'm looking forward to it now. Only a six tonight and 4 on Thursday. My Saturday 2 will be walking round the expo. Expect we'll be there about 1 o'clock. Anyone able to meet up then?

    DC
  • Still fighting the lurgy - Beechams, Echinacea, Vit C tabs, honey & lemon, hot blackcurrant and mint choc chip ice-cream are the current remedies.

It's not particularly hitting anywhere except the throat, so I'm kind of convinced it is a throat infection, so all I can do is treat symptoms and let it run its course.

Hopefully 7 days will have been enough for me to feel fighting fit by the weekend.

I'm due to be at the expo from 12-12:30 ish on Sat, but trying to fit arrangements in around the family.

  • Wilde - sorry to hear you are still striken.

I am just back from a gentle run only to find i am till in pain but not as much as before. Physio says I'm good to go BUT IT WILL HURT ON THE DAY ( as If I didn't know that already).

Hope everyone else is doing great - nothing more for me now except drugs, ice and rest.

    See you all soon.
  • NJ- I'd go with my old shoes and old orthotics as long as you trust them to give you enough support. I'm with Depth Charge that if you wear the new ones, invest in some Compeeds (can get them at Tesco). They're the best blister plaster I've ever used.

Gymbunny- Glad you're physio has given you the a-ok. We'll all be hurting Sunday so you'll fit in nicely. :)

I finished the adjustments on my skirt today and think I have figured out the trick to getting my name on my shirt (I've been experimenting). Getting quite excited and nervous. I skipped today's run with the viral infection, but plan on doing 4 tomorrow. I hate the idea of not doing anything until Sunday! Good luck and I hope everyone is on the mend and feels better race day!
