  • Bloody hell, Rob - we're going to have to stick training wheels on you!
Just gym today, and a little walk. Nice weather again.

Decided to try and sell my Boston medal,it will just be shoved in a drawer as I haven't even ran the distance virtually, anyway got a £50 bid on Ebay already.

Shades, I missed your question earlier about the dog.  We are keeping our eye on the rescue centres, but it's a bit more difficult to view the animals at the moment due to the restrictions.  I think you have to book to see a particular dog, rather than being able to see all of them.  Also, it turns out a lot of them don't seem to like cats.....and we've got a cat.  Or some of them aren't very sociable with other dogs, which can be a problem.

Ian, well done!  Someone on Fetch said the London medals were going for a lot of money and I saw one auction for the whole package (medal, shirt, small bag, and date tab) went for £260!  Bonkers.
  • SHADESSHADES ✭✭✭✭
Ian - great idea, you'll maybe get a bit more than that.

I heard the London ones were on for circa £300, not sure if they get that price though.    Part of the reason some folk were anxious to get their London medals ASAP so they could flog them.

When I'm older and more penniless I could flog my medals  ;)

Robert - hope you're not too sore today  :'(

Not a twinge from my ankle after my run yesterday, was fine all day and was tempted to run this morning but have resisted.

    Gym later.
  • SHADESSHADES ✭✭✭✭
Big G - I wandered off to get a coffee mis post.

Yes, it must be harder to find/choose a rescue dog in Covid times.   I hope you find one soon, worth waiting for one with the right temperament.

I know there is rush to buy London medals immediately post race, by the lazy sods that didn't take up their places.   Some were allegedly running for a bet or had raised sponsorship, sadly not always honourably, that is they keep the money but need the medal as evidence.
  • Big_GBig_G ✭✭✭
I forgot to mention.  We were talking about SA and I was reminded of this video of a YouTuber (Ben Parkes) doing a tough race in SA called Ultra Trail Cape Town, which is a 100K event.  This guy is a very good runner, and says this is toughest race he's ever done.  It's got strict cut offs with a time of 17hrs for the overall finish on very tough terrain.  https://youtu.be/5AkIDP3BT6Q
  • Big_GBig_G ✭✭✭
Shades, yeah, it's bizarre that those medals go for that price.  I just checked eBay and that one for £260 is a completed auction so that was the final price - i.e., the money exchanged hands for that amount.  I know on the real marathon, some runners have the auction set up so that it finishes at say 3pm on the Sunday of the race, so the auction has been open a week prior to the race and then finishes on the day of the race.  I think those, especially if they come with the timing chips and shirt, get the most money.  As I was browsing completed listings, I saw someone sold their full London medal collection of all the medals from 1981-2020 for £500 - a lot of money, but not that much bearing in mind the 2020 package on its own went for £260.
  • SHADESSHADES ✭✭✭✭
Big G - I suspect the person that paid the £260 needed his evidence quickly for whatever reason, probably not honourable.    :#

Re genuine buyers, it's always interesting what people value and will pay good money for.   We all choose what to spend our money on.
  • I wonder how much my Tokyo Marathon T-shirt would go for?

Run today: the intention was to do a couple of warm-up miles then do three at around HMP to see how that would affect the hamstring. Did three miles, but after the fourth mile a bit faster (didn't quite make HMP - it was between HMP and MP) I realised I was not mentally and physically on for pushing myself today, so did a cool down mile and called it quits. I've had a couple of patchy nights and I don't think the grey, windy weather helped my mood either - I felt much better during my two runs during the week.
Hamstring didn't seem any worse on the faster mile, but QL is niggling again, which is annoying (it was yesterday, to be fair - perhaps it didn't like some of the stuff I was doing in the gym).
I've entered the 10 mile anyway, so will have to make sure I get more sleep. Extra hour tonight should help.
  • SHADESSHADES ✭✭✭✭
Cal - well if times are hard there's always the option to put your Tokyo shirt up for sale.  ;)

Good news on your race entry, is that next weekend or tomorrow?

I've only been out in the car to Homebase to get the paint and awful conditions, wind and rain.   I saw a few runners out and 2 girls, not running together, had obviously not checked the forecast pre run and looked wrecked in the weather conditions as very underdressed.  One girl I saw stopped and tried to get some shelter, she looked exhausted.

  • E mmyE mmy ✭✭✭
    Hi all,

Robert: I think we should wrap you in cotton wool. Hope you're feeling ok.

Cal: good idea to try and sell the shirt. I'm sure it could go for a fair bit. Maybe a few good night's of sleep would be good to then try again? This time of year can be tough with the lack of daylight

Shades: I've donated all my old medals to a hospital in the north that melt it down and sell the raw metal. I offered them to my daughter's school but they weren't interested.

BigG: depending on the breed you're looking for, consider a specialised rescue. We were on the watch list for a few different husky rehomers when we were looking for rogue and she appeared out of the blue.

Ian: were you due to run Boston USA (THE Boston?) I saw a friend got his through this week.

I did 13miles this morning, attempting to dodge some dangerous looking clouds. Feel mostly ok afterwards and no niggly Achilles. I've had a bit of a cold this week so have been glad to stay at home.
  • SHADESSHADES ✭✭✭✭
Emmy - that's a good way to get rid of medals that you don't want to keep and all for a good cause.  The price of scrap metal is usually increasing so in demand.

Of course some of the medals are sold on auction sites to raise additional funds for charities, if the runner has no wish to keep it.

That's a good idea re specialist rescue centres, I'd love to have a retired greyhound as such sweet natured dogs,  but not practical in my flat.   No good for Big G either as they chase cats.

That's a decent distance from you today especially considering all your races have been cancelled.
  • Ian5Ian5 ✭✭✭
Emmy-Yes I was,it will be quite rare over here as only people who were entered into the real race could enter the virtual.
    It's now at £100
  • SHADESSHADES ✭✭✭✭
    Ian - £££  :) that's good.

New shoes have just arrived, looking forward to trying them out tomorrow morning.
  • Shades- as someone who has been involved with greyhound rescue for thirty odd years I can confidently say that many ex-racers are cat safe. Yes, they will chase a cat if it runs when they are out walking (as will lots of other breeds) but some are fine in the home.
If you think you can or you think you can't you're probably right.
  • SHADESSHADES ✭✭✭✭
LMH - every greyhound I've known has had the sweetest temperament but also will chase cats.   I guess it comes partly from instinct and partly from their training.

Sadly I don't have room for one, although I believe they just like a sofa to sleep on most of the day.

I think Big G wants a dog hopefully to run with, so greyhounds aren't suitable for that.
  • Big_GBig_G ✭✭✭
Shades, regarding the weather, my OH was locuming at a vet practice in Newton Abbot today.  Due to the restrictions, she has to go out to the cars to go and get the animals and take them inside, which can be an issue in the weather we've had today!
  • I have had three cat safe greyhounds and I think my current one probably would be too however I don't have a cat so can only judge it on her behaviour when we have met them outdoors. There are a lot of myths about greyhounds.
If you think you can or you think you can't you're probably right.
  • Enjoy your shoes, Shades.
I was looking forward to having a nice Sunday run, especially as it's light an hour earlier. But I started feeling mildly grotty yesterday afternoon and now my throat is scratchy. Explains why my body was reluctant to do tempo miles yesterday, eh? Hopefully a day off and rest will allow me to get out tomorrow instead - weather looks nicer tomorrow anyway.

Big G - that's alright in summer weather but must have been most unpleasant for OH trying to prize an unwilling pet from its owner's car in that weather.   It was so bad that if it had not been for Covid I would have stopped and offered a lift to the poor runner that I saw trying to get some shelter.

LMH - I think greyhounds make lovely pets.   I like whippets too, my friend has one and she runs with hers.

Cal - hope that sore throat comes to nothing more than a cold.

5 miles this morning, tempted to do more but will hold back on the distance for a few more days.    Enjoyed the lighter morning today and my lovely new shoes.  5 minutes after leaving home there was a torrential shower that came on so quickly, I did think I might shelter in the bus stop around the corner but by the time I got there it eased off and sun is out now.

That's the 10th pair of shoes I've bought this year 😲

  • Big_GBig_G ✭✭✭
Shades, exactly.   I think she also provided some "constructive criticism" of the system to the vet practice.  The receptionist says "Next up is Rufus and he's in a black car".  Of course, OH goes out and there's three black cars all with dogs peering out the windows that look like they could be called Rufus :)  Not helped by the fact that owners are inside the car and don't really want to get out to get the dog out the boot because it's raining.  So she goes out, wandering around a car park, shouting "Rufus!"  :)

Absolutely amazing Giro so far.  I've really enjoyed it and I was planning on switching to the Vuelta but I'm glad I haven't yet.  Final day today and it's a short individual time trial, where the whole race will be decided.

I find myself looking around for races, and the nearest thing that takes my fancy is a Duathlon.  5k run, 15k bike, 3k run.  It's at the leisure centre I go to 1.5 miles away and I am tempted, but it's in November and it could be really crap weather.  The runs are on the grass (could be muddy), and the bike is on the tarmac velopark.  I may keep an eye on the weather forecast in the week prior to the race and see how it is looking and then decide.   It's 15th November so if the achilles keeps progressing as it is I'd be okay to get around it I think, even I don't actually "race" the running parts.  I just feel I want to toe the start line at something.....anything!

Big G - definitely needs a tweak to the system at the vets.   Any smart dog might hide from the vet and not respond to their name.    ;)
My Mum used to have a dog called Rufus too.

I haven't started watching the Giro yet, I've heard the headlines this morning so am looking forward to it.   I'm recording Vuelta highlights too.

I am actually going to watch the penultimate TdeF stage today, which I've been saving as I know it's an exciting one.

I want to race too, but I'm not looking as I don't like racing this time of year and if my instructor is back at the gym in November I want to ramp up my training there to finish my journey re fat/muscle.   Need to get rid of ankle niggle too, which I think is just about done.

A duathlon would be interesting and make a nice change.

Went out for a 4.5 miler this morning and tried the Asics GT2000 for the first time in a few weeks.  It went okay but not as good as the New Balance at the moment for the achilles, so it'll be back to those for the next few runs again.  HR was really high too so overall not a great run today, but it's good that the achilles appears under control for these shorter runs at the moment.
  • SHADESSHADES ✭✭✭✭
    Big G - I take it you've not taken a Stanley knife to a pair of the GT2000's?    ;)

Your HR may have been raised as you were conscious that your shoe could aggravate the achilles at any time during the run.
  • Big_GBig_G ✭✭✭
Shades, I haven't done that to the GT2000 only because they're quite new :)  Also, because the NB are working for me I haven't needed to do that, as the NB really are helping to ease the pressure in that area.  I did cut an old pair of Saucony Guides that only had a few miles left in them anyway just to see if it helped, but since ordering the New Balance I've exclusively been wearing them on the small number of runs I've done.  Yeah, probably it was just a bit of extra stress relating to trying the Asics - it's amazing how little things can impact the HR.   It was good conditions and I felt relaxed at the start, but I just couldn't keep the HR down today.
  • SHADESSHADES ✭✭✭✭
Big G - I don't blame you not wanting to take a knife to shoes that cost the best part of £100.

I wore my GT1000's today, they are the same as the GT2000, and I noticed the heel tab is quite high and rigid.   But I also wondered if the shoe has too much stability for you?   I had a couple of pairs of new Kayanos given to me for the 10 in 10 and I gave them away as the heel was too rigid for me and gave me mild discomfort in the heel/achilles area.  The NB you are using are neutral shoes, maybe that is what suits you better?   Just a thought.

I watched the penultimate TdeF yesterday, the time trial, truly fabulous.

6 miles this morning with no ankle discomfort, had a good run, I do appreciate the sparse traffic when I go out earlier than usual.

    Pilates later

  • Big_GBig_G ✭✭✭
Shades, funnily enough, I had been wondering that as well.  It could be a combination of things - I do wonder if it was triggered when I stumbled on a trail one time.  I thought it was okay and ran on and ran the next days too, but then maybe the introduction of the small amount of speed work I did just tipped it over the edge.

Yes, that stage of the TdF was fantastic.  I was initially worried about Roglic and how he may recover from losing the Tour like that, but he's been cycling well since then.  He did well in the world champs a week after the Tour and won on a one-day race about a week after that.  He's also in the Vuelta and was in Red, but maybe two tours so close together may be too much?  We'll see.  Probably you've seen the result of the Giro?

I went and did a virtual class this morning, and ran there and back too (1.5 miles each way).  This time I ran in the Asics Roadhawks that I use for marathon  as I didn't want to wear the NB on the bike, and they were fine.  Gamin tells me it's my first ever brick session, which I suppose it was!  I ran there my with Camelbak bag, to carry a water bottle and towel and it worked well.  Probably I'll do that again if the weather is reasonable as it's not a lot slower compared to getting the car out.
  • Ian - good work with flogging the virtual medal! I had considered selling the London one but by the time I had it theres plenty of them for sale.

Shades - I assume this being the 10th pair they haven't all been used?

Cal - enjoy the race, if the shirt isn't used it's worth selling.  I don't know how desirable Tokyo stuff would be as it doesn't have the history of London/Boston/ New York.

Big G - The Dualathalon would be a nice way to remember your cross training.  Having been at a few races recently its a good feeling.

Left ankle isn't as bad as I thought I was going to be, just severely bruised and restricts mobility.  Right knee where it grazed is scabbing over and very sore.

Marshalled at Stort 30 yesterday, on my way managed to drive past 6 wj doing their virtual championship race so got to hoot them on, then set up medals and t shirts to give out to runners before packing up.  Seeing runners back full of mud, some didn't manage to stay upright either made me glad I couldn't walk it.

Need to rest the leg now for a few days and hopefully the bruising will go down and can get back out running again and try and stay on my feet.
  • SHADESSHADES ✭✭✭✭
    Big G - the Roadhawks, they're neutral aren't they?

If the GT's are perhaps a bit too strong on the stability front combined with your high mileage over the few months perhaps and then that stumble on the trail and maybe the speedwork being the final catalyst to set off the tendinitis again.

I'm just adding my new shoes to my sloe mileage spreadsheet, I now have 22 pairs  :o   I have 11 pairs that are mild stability and 11 pairs are neutral.   Drop from 4mm to 12mm.

I really felt for Roglic on that stage, he did his best but just didn't have the legs on that stage and it was a well deserved win from Pogacar, they've certainly done a lot for the reputation of Slovenia.  Really exciting to have a time trial that has a hilly section.

I know who has won the Giro bit not looked at the GC listing.

Pilates was very challenging today  :'(
  • E mmyE mmy ✭✭✭
    Morning all,

Rob: hope the right knee improves and doesn't hurt too much. Stort was really muddy when I did it, too. Glad you had a good day.

Shades: great news about your ankle :-)

BigG: I suspect my Achilles issues started after some trail running in the forest.

5miles for me this morning with the dogs. My watch decided to not work for a few km but everything saved so I'm going to keep an eye on it.
