The wind and rain was pretty rough overnight here, but perfect running weather this morning, went for a nice 6 miles or so with OH and daughter, nice and leisurely.
Big G-I am looking forward to giving it a go,my mileage is still really low as i'm only running 3 days a week so I am going to use it 3 days to try and get the cardio going at least.I've worked out how to mirror from my phone to the tv,so can have the scenery on the TV as I'm riding to help pass the time.
We are heading back to Tier 3 soon I think so we are going out for a meal tonight before we can't again.
  • SHADESSHADES ✭✭✭✭
Big G - yes, I remember you were quite poorly this time last year.

You're doing well building the mileage back up.   Good you could get back out on one of your favourite routes today.   It's alright running on the flat but a few ups and downs makes a run so more interesting.

Re 2021 it's hard to make plans running wise.   Maybe soon we'll have more information on vaccine schedules and how that will affect our return to some normality.   I've used the vaccine calculator, it's possibly inaccurate, but I could be in line for vaccination by early March.

Jelly - does sound like your mattress isn't helping your back.   But sitting on the floor and picking up the toddlers must be quite a strain on the back too.
Good news on the watch, can't beat new bit of kit.

Rcouture - good to hear that you've recovered well and no niggles after your speedy run last week.

Ian - are you in Tier 2 now?   We are in Tier 2, cases rising but still in the bottom 10 in the country.   I do hope they don't put us all in Tier 4.

  • Ian5Ian5 ✭✭✭
    Shades-Yes we've been in 2 since the lockdown ended,last week we had 152/100k but rising,average was 238.
One of our nieces got a positive test earlier,we haven't seen her for a while, but MIL spent time with her xmas morning, then we did with MIL xmas afternoon so being careful for a few days now so meal is out for tonight.
I did that calculator, got told 38mill in front of me   Daughter has been vaccinated now and OH has been asked to give her details from work in so should be on the list soon.
  • Ian/Big G - Sorry to hear you've both been struck down with the dreaded PF. Thank goodness that the two of you seem to have got over it relatively quickly.

Cal - I'm envious of you running round looking at all those Christmas lights. That must be one of the big advantages of living in a city, lights round here are few and far between.

Rob - Sounds like you've been ticking over well.. all ok on the injury front?

Shades - A good 14 miler for you this morning in spite of the conditions. I hesitate to ask but when is your next race? (assuming everything goes ahead and you are not plunged into lockdown again)
Are you still managing to follow the Connemara training plan?

Yesterday I had my first positive run since the end of August and it felt great.
I went out for my basic 10k loop with the goal of at least trying to run non stop for at least 5k. This sounds ridiculous but I've had a bit of a block in my mind as to whether I was actually capable of doing that. I've really felt I've regressed so much as to even consider finding a couch to 5k plan. Even before I got injured I was walk/running a lot of runs as couldn't seem to stay within my MAF range either. With that in mind I've ditched the HR monitor for the time being until I can get some decent continuous mileage under my belt. In any case it'll all be at easy pace and I'll go back to MAF later on.
I managed to get to 5k without walking and then carried on and finished the loop without walking once. My injured leg was pulling a bit but nothing unbearable and the sense of achievement at the end was great and I couldn't stop grinning like a loon.
I went out again today for a short 6k in the forest and although I did walk in places this was fine..I proved my point to myself yesterday. Progress!

Ian - think we're up to about 95/100 but that's double what it was 10 days ago and it's rising rapidly.
I think I might be bumped up from group 7 to group 5 for the vaccination, we'll see.

Mamafox - great news you had a positive run yesterday and today.
I agree, forget the HRM for now as you want to be comfortable running again and feel that your leg has regained its strength.

I don't know when my next race is.  I've now deferred Connemara until 2022 as not sure if travel will be allowed by April.

I've done 2 weeks of the Connemara plan, I couldn't understand why I'm finding it quite challenging as the mileage is not high for me, so I had a good look at the plan today.
I realise now that as I've moved the rest day to Wednesday I'm doing 76% of the weekly mileage in 4 consecutive days and that includes the dreaded 10 mile tempo run which I find hard.  If I hadn't moved the rest day then that would be taken the day after the tempo run, then I would have a run at easy pace and 2 runs at long run pace to finish the week off.   So when I find out when circuits class is back I may have to reschedule the plan.   I still want to do one Pilates class too and at least 3 gym sessions a week.
Possibility of ice this week too so I may stay on week 2 of the plan for another week.   Week 1 and 2 are the same.

Ian - yesterday's figures has bumped us up to 125/100k.   Dread to think what it will be when the Christmas socialising figures kick in.

6 recovery miles for me this morning.   It was starting to get frosty when I went to bed last night but this morning we had rain.   It didn't look too bad so thought I'd risk it.   Had a really good run, only on my return run was it starting to freeze on the pavements, so glad I didn't delay my run any later.   Was able to run in the road most of the time due to the light traffic so avoided the icy bits.
  • Shades - I don't think I've ever heard you say you don't know when your next race is  :(
I've had a quick look at the Connemara plans and they look good, are you doing the ultra or the marathon training plan? I guess as your base level is already there you are starting from week 6 of the plan. See what you mean about having the rest day after the tempo run, must take a fair bit of juggling to fit all your gym work in around those sessions. I think it's a good idea to do a plan even with no definite marathon in sight, gives us some structure.
At the moment I'm just going to build up my mileage gradually and then when it's approaching something acceptable then  maybe look at a plan too. I am entered for Cognac and La Rochelle for next year which are both in November. At my current level of fitness that's probably a good thing!

Did my 10k loop again this morning, ran all of it apart from the very steep bit at the end and was 2 mn slower than the other day. My legs were aching mind you which is normal considering I've done bugger all for months. Better not overdo it but it's also in my mind that I'll be back at work next week so want to make the most of my time while I can  :#
  • SHADESSHADES ✭✭✭✭
mamafox - I don't usually race in the winter anyway but I would normally have 80% of next year's races planned and entered.  But Covid cases are going crazy here and we still haven't had the effect of the relaxation of rules for Christmas Day.  A lot of the country are already in the highest tier, Tier 4 and it's possible the rest of us may follow, so there will be no racing then anyway.   I have a deferred entry for a few races in 2021 and a few of us from the thread have entered Dartmoor Discovery in June 2021.   I have booked a flight and hotel for the IOM in August.

Re Connemara plans, I started on week one as I haven't been doing anything longer than 10 miles so I need the build up for the longer runs.   I've just completed week one and two of the ultra plan.   This week I could run on Wednesday morning (later Pilates class) and therefore take Friday as a rest day, however, forecast is terrible so ice could spoil this week's plan anyway.   I'm aiming the plan at Dartmoor Discovery now, I can scale back the distances of the longest runs as DD is a shorter race than Connemara, need to do the long runs on hillier routes too, but I'm a while away from that.

You're really back into your running now, your legs are bound to complain a bit, but that will soon pass.   :)
  • SHADESSHADES ✭✭✭✭
mamafox - as you haven't had time to read back you might have missed that I have bought 15 pairs of running shoes this year 😄.   Using up the money I would have spent on races.
  • Big_GBig_G ✭✭✭
Well done MF, glad to hear you had 2 good runs.

I did about 1hr25 on the bike yesterday afternoon and then went out for a 10-miler this morning.  I was laying in bed and it was chucking it down with rain but by the time I got myself sorted it had stopped and I had another good run.  It was back to the seafront today so mainly flat, but the pace was quite good at my MAF-rate too.  It was cold and it did rain a bit, but I enjoyed it.   Possibly it'll be a rest day from running tomorrow, but I'll just see how I am.
  • mamafox, so glad you are out running again!

No real plans for next year - I have a few races booked but whether they go ahead is another matter. I am going to take things as they come.

Waited until 11am to go out today due to frost so there were an irritating number of small kids on bikes and scooters on the common and I hit the side streets as soon as I could. Anyway, I banged out the required 7 miles even though legs felt quite heavy, which takes me to the magic 2000. 🎉 I'm going to try and do another 20 by the end of the year but I don't think I'll try and replicate this mileage next year - it's been rather hard on the old bod. Hamstring is still pretty gnarly. I've the Virtual EA 10K tomorrow so hopefully it'll be OK for that, at least.
  • SHADESSHADES ✭✭✭✭
Big G - it's not taking you long to see improvements with your MAF training.

My NB 1080's wide arrived today.   Really good service as I ordered them on Christmas Eve and since then it's been all bank holidays really.   I'm hoping it's not icy in the morning so I can try them out on my hilly run.  The cold wind has been drying up the roads nicely today, but once the road is dry it rains again.  😡

Cal - that's one of the reasons I don't like running later is people, especially with children, wandering aimlessly around getting in the way.

You made that mileage goal.  :). Maybe next year have a different type of goal that doesn't weigh you down so much.
  • Big_GBig_G ✭✭✭
That’s good service, Shades. Hopefully the wider version will work out. I’m yet to try mine still.

Cal, well done on the mileage. I think you’re going to finish just ahead of me.

OH was off today so we went out for lunch at a nice place, and I had to nip into Halfords on the way back. Really busy in there but I was in and out as I’d placed a ‘click and collect’ order so no problems. Not sure why it was so busy - Xmas gift returns perhaps, or does everyone service the car in their time off??!

Went onto Zwift for about 1hr15 and did a hard work out late afternoon. Legs are shredded now!

Having a Zoom night with a few friends this evening as we’ve not met up for ages.
  • MF/Big G - Glad to hear you’re both getting back into the swing of things running wise.

Cal - You’re still down for Richmond mara in March (in theory) right?

5 miles today again super slow at 10:50min/mi and that at my MAF limit so clearly my body continues to tell me to take it easy in coming back from that half. I also blame the sizeable amount of choccies and food over the period 😬. Will be fine after a couple of weeks I reckon. I also tried out my transcend 7s for the first time. They are as expected, proper heavy clunkers but very comfortable for slow MAF miles so happy with them.
  • Ian5Ian5 ✭✭✭
Mama-Good to hear you are getting going again, hope it continues.
    Cal-Well done on the 2k.
Big G-My cycle machine is arriving on NYE,early finish so will put it together and use it NY day.
Shades-We are now just over 200,hard to gauge the true difference as we have unlimited no symptom testing here, and I know a lot of people who went for tests in the run up to xmas, either way its heading the wrong way again.
  • SHADESSHADES ✭✭✭✭
Big G - you still waiting for good weather to try out the NB1080W.  ;)  Wore mine this morning and they really are so comfortable.   It's a bonus to me if a shoe looks good and I really like the look of these, would quite happily wear these for the gym and casual wear too, I won't of course, at least not until they're past their running days.

Rcouture - good to hear the new shoes suit you.   They will of course feel heavy compared to the Hokas and the Nike race shoes but you'll soon get used to them.

Ian - we only have symptom testing here.

I guess putting the bike together might take quite a while  :/   If you normally go out to the pub on NYE this will certainly take your mind off that.

8 miles this morning, hilly run 679 ft.   Bitterly cold but thankfully no ice, I had to run carefully for my first hilly lap as the roads are wet and as there are exposed higher sections I couldn't be sure there wasn't any ice.   Had a good run but the wind picked up during my run and I started getting colder and colder, I'd been fine for the first half of the run.   Was glad to get home and out of the wind.   New shoes are gorgeous.

Kilian is going to have another go at the 24 hour record, somewhere a bit warmer this time..

Shades, yes, I'm still waiting to wear my wider version :)   It looks like it's possible they may get an outing in the next couple of days though.  I was just thinking on my run yesterday that my usual width version still feel so comfortable as well, so it'll be interesting to see if there is any difference when I wear a brand new pair.  I was a bit hesitant early on as there was minor wear on the edge of the outsole, but they'll be at 250 miles soon and they're fine with lots of wear left.

RCouture, well done on the run.

Ian, good news about the new bike coming.

It's a (reluctant) rest day from running today.  I'm still being a bit careful and don't really want to run 3 days in a row again, especially with all the cycling I'm doing and have planned.  It does mean that if I want to get to 2000 miles for the year I'll need to do 19 miles in two days so not sure if that'll happen, but we'll see :)  If I feel I can, I will, but I'm not that bothered if I don't hit it.  2020 miles (my initial target) definitely won't happen.

There was another obituary about Josie Waller here, with some reference to Trotters including a link to an interview she did in the club's magazine.  https://runabc.co.uk/josie-waller-obituary-by-alan-newman

Big G - the wider version is more comfortable in the instep area and slightly roomier in the heel, I might try and put elastic laces in the wider version but on the downhills today my foot stayed securely where it should be.   I think they'd be good for the hills of DD.

Don't worry about minor wear on the outsole, that's usually due to scuffing the foot, not a sign of any weakness in the shoe.

Not worth risking 19 miles right now for a target that isn't important, you can always set the target for next year as 2021.

That's a great obituary for Josie.   I find it hard to believe the Trotters will ever have such a talented runner again, 36 world records.   She was a real character too.   Last time I saw her she was marshalling at DD at about 21 miles, she must have been 90ish then, she gave me a hug and sent me up the hill.
  • Rcouture - yes, in theory...the way the pandemic is going, though, I have my doubts.

I was going to do my BA vets 10K today but my hamstring was particularly achey yesterday afternoon and I didn't want to risk it. I went out for an easy 7 instead and it wasn't too bad. I don't think I'm in the right mental place for pushing myself at the moment but I'll see how I feel tomorrow. I've until the 31st to log one if I do do it. If I don't, I've only wasted a pound.
  • SHADESSHADES ✭✭✭✭
Cal - do you think the colder weather is affecting your hamstring?

  • Big_GBig_G ✭✭✭
Shades, I too think it's extremely unlikely Trotters will ever have such a talented runner again!

I did a couple of Zwift sessions today - one in the morning (split over two back-to-back rides to get extra Zwift points....) and one in the afternoon, totalling about 3.5hrs for the day.
  • SHADESSHADES ✭✭✭✭
Big G -  definitely a bit of a Zwift addiction going on there I think. ;)

If you nip to Aldi, mince pies, stollen etc all reduced in price, you must be burning off a few calories.

Did you see the link I put up earlier re Kilian's next 24 hour race?  Might have missed it in a xpost.
  • Cal - Yes, I'm very glad I'm back running again! I just hope I can build myself back up to something like the level I was before. Feel like a complete beginner at the moment.
Well done on hitting that mileage target.

    Ian/ Rc/Big G - Thank you for your support too :)

Big G - I had to Google Zwift.. what a wonderful idea!

Shades - DD is a fine target to aim for.. who else on the thread has entered?
And yes, I missed that nugget about you buying 15 pairs of shoes :D That's a fabulous investment for you and a good way of spending your race entry money. Must be a complicated spreadsheet trying to rota all those around mind you!
I've bought one pair in the last 18 months.. my Asics last March. This year has been an absolute disaster for me running wise, think I've spent more time on the injury bench than off it and even when I was trying to make a comeback I couldn't seem to get going properly with my MAF training. Roll on 2021!

A short forest run today which wasn't great as my legs just felt trashed. However trashed in a normal tired way as opposed to any sinister injury related way.
Will try my 10k loop again tomorrow.
  • Big_GBig_G ✭✭✭
Shades, yes, I saw that link about Kilian.  Thanks.  I'll tune in again I reckon.

Funnily enough, I walked to work with OH this morning and I used the word "addicted" to her regarding Zwift!  I find myself planning rides, routes, which groups to ride in, what bikes to use, or kit to "buy" using the points.  And so far I've done zero races and no rides with anyone I actually know, so there's all that side of it still to come.  I really never would have thought I'd have got into it so much.  In some ways, for me, it's better than riding on the actual roads, mainly because it's safer (something I'd never say about a treadmill)!  I'll see how I get on with it as I suppose it could get a bit much once the weather is good, but it's not beyond the realms of possibility where I could have a bike set up full time.  Either I could get a cheap second hand bike and get that set up full time on the turbo....or (slippery slope time), I could get myself a better road bike and have my current bike set up all the time.... :)    First I'll see how I get on though.  I've only been on it a short while and when the better weather comes around I may have had enough of it by then.  Plus, running is still my priority so if I do get back up to 50/60 miles a week in the Spring, I'll probably be too tired to make the most of it anyway.

A thing I'm not looking forward to a lot...at some point I suppose I should do a brick session or two for this duathlon I've got booked. :(
  • Big_GBig_G ✭✭✭
Shades, we went shopping this evening and I picked up some more mince pies and another stollen.... :) Very, very quiet in there this evening, but all fully stocked.
  • SHADESSHADES ✭✭✭✭
mamafox - 4 of us have entered DD, Big G, Ian, Jelly and myself.    It sold out very quickly, there's a transfer list with over 40 hoping to get a place.

I just checked and it was 16 pairs over the year, but I did buy them mostly in the last couple of months when I decided to change my marathon/ultra shoe back to Brooks Adrenaline so bought 4 pairs of them, but I'm only using one pair at the moment for my long runs.   I also have another pair of Guides not used yet as I still have an identical pair already on the go.   There is no rota for using them although I do tend to try and use them all on a regular basis.

You're making great progress with your running now you've got started again.

Big G - it's not the weather for cycling outdoors and Zwift is a lot safer and more convenient.   I expect in the summer you'd want to be outdoors.    Plenty of time to try out a few brick sessions.

Glad you were able to restock with the mince pies and stollen.  :)

    Rest day for me today.
  • Big_GBig_G ✭✭✭
Shades, I just tried the wider version of the 1080s on my run this morning and I like them.  I'm going order two more pairs (one regular and one wider) and I think that should see me through the year.  I've got other brands/shoes that I will wear too for other runs, so that will be a good stock for me.

I did 7-miles this morning and had a nice run.  It was cold but I was wrapped up, so it was fine.  The vast majority of my recent runs I've just been ticking along quite a bit under MAF but on this morning's I did a flat mile in the middle of my run at MAF and it came out at 8:27, which I was really pleased with.  Fingers crossed if I can keep it going over the next month or two I should be more or less back where I was I hope.  I'm definitely not back at square one with it, which is encouraging anyway.  I remember all those frustrating runs I had in May/June and I'm past that stage, definitely.
  • SHADESSHADES ✭✭✭✭
Big G - are you trying to out buy me in shoes this year?   ;). I won't tell your OH.

But they are lovely shoes, good that you find the wide a comfortable fit too.

I am tempted to buy another pair too.   Tomorrow I need to sit down and write my 2021 budget so I will decide then.

That's a speedy mile you timed today, your fitness is coming back very quickly.

I do hope that we aren't going to be bumped up to Tier 4, I guess we'll know later today.  ☹️
  • I wish I could restock with mince pies etc but being gluten free, the ones I can eat tend to sell out quickly, unfortunately.

Very cold today but I decided I would do the Masters 10K, so I went out just before 10 (allowing frost to melt), ran the three miles down to Battersea Park, then did the three and a half laps that made 10K, then huffed and puffed three miles home again.
It was awful. The run there was fine so I figured I'd be able to manage a reasonable effort, if not one on a par with recent races. I decided not to look at my watch (other than to check distance) and just go on feel/breathing.
Hamstring was noticeable but not horrible (I do think it doesn't like the cold, Shades, and it was 1 degree) but I also started getting a stitch and I was struggling mentally. I checked my watch during what I thought was the final mile to find it was only 4.5 miles and I had a bit of a sulk after that. Last mile was quite a bit slower than the others.
I finished in 56:32 which is bad, for me...given I ran just over 50 in January, and even significantly worse than the 53:xx 10Ks I've done this Autumn.
Garmin suggested my HR was very high (average 171/max 192) which might have been cadence lock, but it definitely felt tough.
Then I had to pick myself up and run the 3 miles home again (which included a big hill) and for once I was glad I had to stop at roads on the way back as my legs had nothing in them and I did not feel good.

Anyway, it's done. I now have just one mile left to do tomorrow to bring me up to 2020 miles for 2020. I'll probably just jog around the block or something.
