Big G - I didn't know you were injured when you ran the six hour race.

I absolutely agree you are a completely different athlete now that's why I think you should run your races such as RED as races, not for PB's, but not too far off.   You are far stronger now and a 3:30 wouldn't take anything like the recovery it used to, I think you could do consecutive days of 3:30 should you want to too.  IMHO running RED at 3:30 would be far more beneficial for you than running it at training pace.

However, subject to Covid recovery of course.  Running to HR would be a good choice post Covid.

    Enjoy watching NYC.
  • Nice spot, Big G...Ian I really hope they can sort that out for you, it's so annoying when stuff like that happens.

Speaking of heart rate, Shades, I got a letter asking me to do a 24 hour thing with a holter monitor next Feb, so I guess they are still looking for issues. Eh.

Anyway, given I'm attempting to do Alton Towers half next weekend, I cranked out a 10 miler this morning. This is the furthest I've gone since the latest injury, and also the first time since that I've run on consecutive days, so it was asking a lot, really. I got it done, though, albeit rather slowly. Hammy was a bit grumpy but considering I did parkrun yesterday, it was a lot better than it had any right to be. Unfortunately I had reflux issues again, even though I only had coffee before going out. My stomach is a law unto itself.

I did see a lot of vintage cars driving through Streatham so figured it must've been a London to Brighton thing as that road is the one you'd take if heading to Sussex. Checked the web when I got back and turned out I was correct. Really nice to see them, though...back when I was a kid, my friend's dad had an ancient Rolls and took us out in it. He passed a long time ago so I've no idea what became of it.

Cal - well done on the 10 miler, you know you can deal with the distance at Alton Towers now.

Is that the first you've heard from cardiology since your last tests?
It can't be serious in their opinion if you don't do the 24 hour thing until February.

Annoying about the reflux.   You don't think the fasting might have triggered/aggravated it?

I occasionally get reflux but never when running.  I can't pinpoint the cause either.

Talking of medical matters, I've been able to book my Covid booster for the end of the month, will be 6 months and 4 days after 2nd jab.  💉
  • I did get a letter a week or so ago saying they wanted to schedule a phone appointment for March...that now makes a lot more sense if they are doing the HRM test in Feb. But yeah...I've not had any indication of what the echo showed. Obviously nothing bad if they've left it this long.

I don't know about the reflux. I've recently given up chewing gum, which I chewed compulsively...I thought that was what was behind it, but clearly not (I also thought the fasting would calm it down). My mother had something called a hiatus hernia so maybe I've just inherited that. Thing is, I don't get any problems at all except when I'm running.
  • SHADESSHADES ✭✭✭✭
Cal - I've googled the reflux a couple of times, seems there's a multitude of probable causes, not very helpful.

8 miles this morning, nice weather for running, seemed fairly bright so I could come back on the unlit roads.   Legs feel a bit fresher today, ready for another leg session in the gym later.   :'(

I saw that YouTuber Seth had a shocker at NYC yesterday.  Credit to him that he finished in a few seconds over 3hrs, but he was hoping for sub-2:20.  Not injured, but he said he had to stop to use the loo 5 times...!  He was in the sub-elite pen, and was mingling with a few of the elites in the building before the start I think.
  • SHADESSHADES ✭✭✭✭
Big G - that must have been an awful day for Seth.   Downside of being a YouTuber, everyone knows, much harder to deal with the disappointment, the price of fame.

The women's course record was broken wasn't it?
  • Big_GBig_G ✭✭✭
Shades, the course record is still from 2003 (2:22:31). Yesterday’s winner was 2:22:39. Molly Seidel broke the US record I believe.

Seth did have a live stream yesterday where he was blaming too many bananas in the days prior. On live streams, people can give ‘superchats’ where they basically give tips/cash to the YouTuber. Wouldn’t be surprised if he made $500 yesterday!

  • Big G - That must be heartbreaking for him as I’m sure i saw on strava that he’s been putting in multiple 140 mile weeks. I don’t watch him that much anymore as he never seems to get to the point of any sentence so I struggle to follow him! Maybe it’s just my comprehension skills.

Molly Seidel seems to be the real deal.

Rest day yesterday and today so will try out a 5 miler from work tomorrow.
  • Big_GBig_G ✭✭✭
Rcouture, he seems to be taking it all in his stride but I suppose he does have to remain positive on YouTube. I would love to see him train properly for a road marathon, but he freely admits he much prefers the trails/mountains.

Something a bit different for me today as I drove over to see Dad, left the car, and ran 10-miles home, with a couple of hills for good measure. I had forgotten the HRM but hopefully remembered everything else, in terms of a change of clothes etc for when I run back to get the car in a couple of days.

I put on a brand new pair of NB 1080V10s today and they really are great out of the box. I’ve got a pair with 500 miles on which I’ll keep for the occasional local parkrun when the field is muddy.  I still have an unopened pair, plus the longer/wider pair I did DD in, which I’ve done 120 miles in.
  • SHADESSHADES ✭✭✭✭
Big G - I'm sure AW posted on FB that the women's record had been broken.

I thought too many bananas caused constipation not the other way round 😉💩

500 dollars isn't much compensation for having such a bad run, after all that training.

Rcouture - I can't watch him as I can't stand his voice, really annoying.  I watched one of his shoe reviews and I don't think I've ever recovered from that.  😄

Molly Seidel is a real star.

    Hope tomorrow's run goes well.
  • SHADESSHADES ✭✭✭✭
Big G - I just saw that AW post on FB again and they said..."8 seconds off the course record".   I took that to mean the record had been broken.   :/

    I'm still loving my NB1080's too, I have 5 pairs, 2 unworn.
  • Big_GBig_G ✭✭✭
$500 for about an hour’s live stream isn’t too bad though. Good luck to him. I saw there were about 3 threads on letsrun about him. That place can be pretty toxic and of course a few were sticking the boot in. He has mentioned letsrun once or twice and basically he ignores that place now. Can’t say I blame him, as I’d do the same in his position.

Who knew that staying out until 2.30am after being up at 6 and running a marathon would result in me not feeling good today 😆
I've emailed Barca so hopefully they get back to me in a few days.Spoke to a few runners last night and didn't find anyone who didn't enjoy it,I loved how wide the roads were so there was always plenty of space and they were often long so no twisting and turning.I forgot to add my watch ended up at 26.6 miles so after we left the main city area it didn't add much more on.1 think I didn't like was about 400m from the end I spotted a big Zurich arch and thought it was the end so hammered it as I thought I could sneak under 3:15,but I still had more to go but had used all my energy.

Ian, I don’t often get jealous really, but I’m envious of you being out there. Watching the race didn’t help as the coverage was good and made me want to be there even more!  I know Barca fairly well too having been there a few times, and I really wanted to be there yesterday rather than sitting on the sofa!

I just watched today’s vlog from Seth and the organisers bussed him and the sub elites out to the start under police escort, and they got to warmup on an indoor track near the start, alongside the elites.  It seemed quite a different experience compared to the masses, as he got to the start line just a few minutes before he was due to start (the elites had gone 5mins earlier).  Fans on the roadside sent footage in and he uses some of that for the race vlogs, and today’s video ended with footage of him walking....  I expect he’ll do a couple more videos about the whole thing.

Ian - glad you enjoyed your post race partying.....I take it no recovery run today then.  😉

I looked this morning to see if I could find you on the results, no luck.   But plenty of evidence on your photos including you at the finish so they should be able to put you in the results without question.   Good photos too, you can see you were running strong.   Well done again.

Shades-Only recovery I've done today is some hydration tablets, feeling a bit better now but stomach is still rough.I seen those pictures before and they can match those up to my starting picture and strava link and should be quite simple.
Big G-It's gone right near the top of my favourite races, probably only NYC ahead of it.Bit of trawling,I found someone who was 34 secs ahead of me at halfway and he was 1650,so guessing I was about 1700 there and my time would put me 1308th so I overtook about 400 in the second half or 25% of those ahead of me.
It has definitely given me a good boost for the winter, running 3:16 off inconsistent training bodes really well for next Spring.
Boston registration opened today so need to get flights sorted for that.
  • SHADESSHADES ✭✭✭✭
Ian - those hydration tabs are so useful 🤮   I've heard many runners say that Barcelona is their favourite marathon for lots of reasons.

I bet you can't wait to start your marathon training, once the hangover has gone of course.   Exciting booking up for Boston too.

6 miles this morning, lovely conditions as a mild 11 degrees.

Pilates, then upper body session in the gym this morning.

Shades, yes, that is it for me.  It is a combination of being in a really great city, and the route does go past a lot of famous sights - Nou Camp, Sagrada Familia, Arc de Triomf, etc.  Also logistics for runners were easy as number pickup, start and finish were all basically at the same place when I did it, near a metro station, and not miles out of town (Berlin and London are a bit of a pain in comparison).  As Ian said, plenty of space to run from the start, and when I did it they were very strict with people being in the correct starting pens so I was running with people at around my pace right from the start.  Minor gripe is that there weren't really enough loos, but then there never see to be at these events; I think the only way I'd ever not moan about that is if I had my own private loo ;)

Ian, I had that also about the arch, and funnily enough I noticed it again when I was watching the coverage this year.  At least we both know for next time ;)  As you probably know, NYC is high up on my list, and I am definitely hope to do it on year, but the only thing that puts me off is logistics on race day morning as I understand it is quite an early start for runners to get out to the start.

I have to say, I have really enjoyed all the majors and (most of) the coverage this year.  I think the fact they all came very close to each other this year meant there was something to look out for most weekends.    And the stories such as Shalane doing all 6 (not her fault that Tokyo was only a virtual, but that was a shame for her) and I think the general feeling of a return to some normality really made it this year.

Forgot to say, I have had my antibody test results back.  No real surprises but I was hoping for more detail than this (some idea of what the levels actually are), but here it is.  I ticked the box saying that they could contact me again, but I think officially that is it now, unless they decide they want to do another round of testing on me.

Thank you for doing a coronavirus (COVID-19) antibody test.

Antibodies were found in your blood sample.

This means it’s likely you’ve had COVID-19 in the last 6 months. We detected antibodies that are made after an infection, and also antibodies that could have been caused by a vaccine.

This result does not guarantee you are fully immune (protected) from COVID-19. It’s still possible to get the virus again or spread it, although your risk is reduced if you’ve had the vaccine or already been infected.

It’s important to keep following COVID-19 advice.

If you took this test because you tested positive for COVID-19 in the last 2 weeks, it’s unlikely the antibodies detected are from your recent infection. They’re more likely to be from a previous infection.

  • Shades - Nice 6 miles.

Anyone done Copenhagen marathon before? Looking at spring options as on hols from the 2-12th of April so can’t do Paris or Barcelona.
  • Ian5Ian5 ✭✭✭
Big G-Start,finish,bag are still in the same area.I'd have thought the antibody test would have been better in a few months so they can see how long they last rather than now.
Rcouture-I haven't done it but did look in to it,it seems a very fast course and from what I read got very good reviews.
  • Ian that's funny about the arch. When I did Vienna, there were big arches and signs over the road for the last couple of miles and I kept thinking "is that the finish?....no. Is that the finish?....no." My feet were killing me so it was pretty tortuous.

Rcouture, you could always do Manchester.  ;)

5 miles this morning - weather forecast said grey skies but it was gorgeous - pink sunrise and clear skies after. Quite mild, too, so I was back in a T-shirt. Hammy was grumpy at first but warmed up pretty well so it was enjoyable after that.
  • Cal - Manchester’s on the 3rd of April no? I’m away 2-12 sadly or it would be in the mix. Nice 5 miles.
  • There is also Edinburgh in May which might be a decent option
  • Ian5Ian5 ✭✭✭
Rcouture-I think Edinburgh marathon and decent don't usually go together.
  • Ian - Why? Scottish weather? City is lovely and meant to be super flat no?
  • Big_GBig_G ✭✭✭
RCouture, I haven't done it, but organisation of Edinburgh is often criticised, for example running out of water one year.  They did a u-turn, but another year they initially said they were only going to publish the top 3 results due to data/privacy concerns but that potentially would have been an issue for GFA runners etc.  It is a great city though, as you say.
  • Ian5Ian5 ✭✭✭
Rcouture-It also has a long run along the front so it will be very weather dependent. There just seemed to have a few years on the run where something went wrong.
Just watched the Barca race, seen myself twice at the start running, and it was good to watch the elites, seen they had a problem with a barrier at the end of the out and back,it was all fixed by time we got there but I don't know how it happened, gutting for the winner as he was affected and equaled the course record so would have beaten it,ladies winner smashed the course record so shows it was a good day for racing.
