ok so i don't usually like a lot of humour in my gangster movies.
Dark, Joe-pesci 'funny-how?' humour is one thing, and fits with the whole crime schtick. However, goofiness just seems out of place. hence, in the opening few scenes when two hapless goons appear to bundle our protagonist (one of whom is bubba from Forrest Gump (with the big gums)), i audibly groaned.
However, in this instance, it works. While Guy Ritchie's Revolver drowned under its own existentialist pretentions and just plain oddness, Josh Hartnett's jaunty cary Grant-esque (a likeness alluded to in the script) wisecracks and carefree demeanour carry the movie along pretty well.
as this isnt a movie with a great deal of depth and following the plot is one of the main enjoyments, I will give nothing much away in that respect.
Hartnett, an actor who I was aware off but knew little about, actually proves himself an extremely capable leading man, likeable and charming but never smarmy and capable of enough emotional intensity to make me root for his character.
He is well-complimented by a nice balanced group of supporting actors including ben kingsley, Morgan freeman bruce Willis, Stanley Tucci (always a pleasure never a chore) and a deliciously kooky turn by Lucy Lui.
It looked quite good in the trailers (why do they call them trailers when they come before the main event, surely they should be called bumpers or summat!?!)
FH I like the cut of your jib young man, you certainly know how to fling a review together...
em yep it isnt quite at my local arty place. I will just have to wait a week or so. maybe on friday. Plus I have one of these unlimited cards (my precious....) for cineworld so dinna like splashin extra cash if I don't have to.
Lord of War, not as bad as I'd been led to believe but just erring on the side of boring. Only the merest hint of Cage gurniness. A movie to while away a couple of hours on a plane.
Corinth, the answer to the question about the lust filled girls is obvious. They just don't have the energy to traipse up there from down here.
god i remember watchin that movie at the pictures and thinkin, 'that's me!!'
sadly without the record shop or the handsome puppy-dog cusack looks
"Liking both Marvin Gaye and Art Garfunkel is like supporting both the Israelis and the Palestinians."
"You are as abandoned and noisy as any character in a porn film, Laura. You are Ian's plaything, responding to his touch with shrieks of orgasmic delight. No woman in the history of the world is having better sex than sex you are having with Ian... in my head."
Just got back from seeing Capote. Wow! 1) What a movie! 2) Damn cold out there
The Trailers: Xmen3, Basic Instinct 2, Superman (yes, another)...and (forget the name)- a movie starring the yummy Mr. Banderas doing his stuff as a ballroom dancing instructor who supervises underprivileged kids apparently in permanent detention....you get the idea.
Capote- It really is an amazing performance by Philip Seymour Hoffman as Truman Capote, who originally found fame as author of "Breakfast at Tiffany's". This film follows his research for "In Cold Blood", a true crime book he wrote about the 2 murderers of 4 members of a family in Kansas. He is able to gather his information by going out there, particularly by getting close to one of the two murderers, Perry Smith.
The movie is fairly slow-moving, but your attention is gripped by the incredibly manipulative, childlike Capote. The voice and manner is annoying, but you get over it after a while. Excellent performances also by Catherine Keener as Harper Lee, and Clifton Collins, who plays Smith. (In Cold Blood has been filmed before, I think in the 60's).
The film is visually very grey and dreary, with evocative shots of the flat Kansas landscape. For me, the most chilling shot (besides one I won't mention here) is that of Ft. Leavenworth out in the middle of nowhere in the winter.
I don't know how much of a difference it makes whether you are familiar with the book "In Cold Blood" on how you view the film, but I'm definitely having a look at my copy later!
Hoffman over Phoenix for the Academy award, I think.
Word of warning: don't go see it if you're depressed (er- I wasn't
XM3- apocalyptic. Pretty hectic trailer. I bought a used DVD of Xmen2 about a year ago, haven't seen it yet
My local Blockbuster's is doing a 7 day rental 3 for £5 deal at the moment, might do that this w/end. Also spotted: Battle Royale II but rated 18?? Maybe somebody undressed briefly?

I once had knowledge of that fine ale!
have been down lately but decided this morning to snap outta it!!
so far the only bad write-up was cosmo landesman in the sunday times and he never likes anythin so he doesnt count.
p.s. how did xmen3 look?
he can play any kind of role and was really curious choice too.
but maybe it was just a pay-the-bills type doofer.
