Saw Star Wars III again last night. The kid in me loves the fact it's Star Wars and so can't possibly be bad. I still get a thrill at the start of it when the music starts up. The grown-up film fan in me cringes at the dialogue and most of the acting in general.
Still some great action sequences and a couple of fairly shocking deaths/near deaths, by Star Wars standards. Overall, I think the kid in me wins and I'll probably get the box set of all 6 films when it's released.
...easiest way to find out for sure, go on IMDB, get the Star Wars CAst lists, and check each actors' cast list individually for place of birth...if really bored.
25hrs- classic (though non-pc) rant by Marty Brogan character, (I only agree with 5 of them). Full text is on IMDB quotes for it. Would still want to live in NYC, tho
Yes, it's quite mellow & haunting. I don't have it, but I just listened to some of the sample clips on Amazon to remind myself. Right! Enough procrastination! Must get busy
There were tons of women directors but there were traditional constraints such as family, studio attitudes, etc. in the past which prevented this.
Leni Riefenstahl (who my parents knew), Lena Wertmuller, Margarethe von Trotta, Jane Campion, etc etc aren't exactly nobodies!
But what is a "great" director? The one who brings in the most money? The one whose names are not recognized might be great but may only have made one film seen by 500 people at a small film festival?
The film takes its name Cidade Baxia from the lower quarter of the Brazilian port city of Salvador de Bahia; Cannes this aint.
If passion has a colour then that colour red, this film is dyed the deepest of scarlet and grinds its gyrating nether regions closer to your face than is comfortable without an extremely cold drink or bucket of ice to hand ready to douse your ardour
Reminiscent in parts of ‘City of God’ the movie deals with the harsh lives and grafts of two down market hoods who fall for the same hooker.
The film essentially poses the question can the fraternal relationship of the male protagonists survive the lust fuelled carnal air-strike of Karinna’s presence. She hitches a ride on their small cargo vessel and pays for her passage with sexual favours.
Karrina played by Alice Braga certainly floated my boat but seemed intent on sinking theirs with all hands.
There are several interesting subplots played out, both men have different colour skin and there is certainly a hint of homoeroticism in evidence here, though this theme is never explored to the full extent that it might have been.
Overall, I enjoyed this movie, a visceral thug fest accompanied by a pulsating score… though I was a little worried that I was being manipulated by the director lingering several frames too long to often over Braga’s delectable body.
Note: Animal lovers should be warned there is a very graphic cock fight at the beginning of the film (though I’m assured no chucks came to any harm)

Verdict 7/10 (and two cold showers)
I think your choice of film was appropriate for this time of year.
