  • It isn't grey to me TE! Another indication that all is not well with the forum. I have given up posting workout points on the triathlon thread because every time they get wiped out again and both John and I get thrown back into November's listing.

Saw my doc this morning and she said I have bronchitis - that's no way to start a new year is it? Antibiotics, a nose spray, etc etc.

  • WtnMelWtnMel ✭✭✭

Hi everyone. Festivities over (and after a break) getting back to normal now. Checking back on posts I missed in the meantime ..

JB6 - had to smile at you being edged out at parkrun and then finding out it was an ex-GB international hurdler you were up against. I saw Quo at Dunstable Civic Hall - well for a bit, but they were so loud we went and sat in the car outside with the windows down and then the volume was perfect! I log all my running on the Fetcheveryone website so have yearly stats going back several years (and when I remember, I can export said stats to a spreadsheet). Happy (belated) anniversary.

HS - ref your repeated notes about your HILLY race, forgive my repeated plea to use copy/paste from Wordpad or similar to avoid further frustration when posting image Some of my friends have moved over to WhatsApp and with it being free I can see why they use it in preference to texting and using up their monthly allowance.

Red - I see you were out running on Boxing Day in shorts and a long-sleeved top + vest. In the recent cold weather I saw a young lady running in shorts and a vest. She must be well 'ard (or else I'm a real wimp!). Happy (belated) anniversary to you too.

Exhausted - no running for a while then you manage to breeze round 8-ish miles .. nothing new there then!image

Columba - glad to hear you had a nice time in (that) London. Hope the gait analysis advice/exercises prove worthwhile.

Aquarius - welcome back (temporarily?) to RW .. your life does sound very busy lately.

Although xmas and new year are 'officially' over, we have Margaret's family visiting us this coming Sat (17 of them at the last count). So our xmas tree is staying up for one extra day (and blow the supposed bad luck of having it up after 12th night).

I only managed a measly 400 miles in 2016 (I usually manage around 500). I've entered the Cheltenham HM which is in October and in preparation, have set myself a target of 700 miles this year. I've started playing Fetchpoint a bit more and am currently trying to squish all the bugs in my home circle (it gets me running in parts of Bishops Cleeve I don't usually visit). I went out yesterday and did 5.5mls .. and in the final 200 yds I even managed to overtake an old lady pedalling slowly up the road image

I don't think I knew it was supposed to be bad luck to leave the tree up after 12th night. Because I live alone, and am in any case away over Christmas, I don't bother with a tree or decorations; but shall take my cards down around 12th night-ish.

Three and a half miles with the running club tonight. Or, three and a half miles mostly without them, since I took a short cut early on, in the expectation that the rest of the "slow group" would soon catch up with me, but they didn't: - not until the turnaround point, and after that they made a detour which I didn't know they were going to, so that was the last I saw of them until we all got back at the end.

  • Morning all,

Bright and sunny and a bit milder. Today is a rest day.

I was always led to believe that it was unlucky to leave up decorations after 12th Night. Something to do with witchcraft, or so the legend goes.

WtnMel, sounds like you have a very large family. Hope you all have a great time on Saturday.

Columba, it seems like you had a rather lonely run last night. Hope the ground wasn't to icy.

Our club session comprised 4 sets of 4 x 40 second hill reps with 70 second run backs, and a 60 second recovery between sets. The hill was a bit icy, but by running in the middle of the road was virtually ice free. The hill was relatively traffic free, so no worries in that respect. I took it cautiously for the first two sets, and then pushed hard during the last two. Total mileage was 7 including the run out and return. It was very cold and we were all well wrapped up.

  • Now here's a thing. I've just been doing a bit of research on a local runner (he's 60) who is capable of some really excellent times - sub 18 5K; sub 38 10k. I've read his brief profile and he says that throughout his career he has never done any more than 20 miles per week in training!

    Astonishing or what?

    Morning all,

Apologies for absence but life got in the way again. Mike's poorly so we had to save our anniversary celebrations for when he's better plus I didn't make it to the marathon at Rye as a result of that and have had to content myself with shorter runs around home (which have been most enjoyable actually).

Will read back later but, in the meantime, wishing you all a Happy and Healthy New Year image

  • JB, that's really amazing and hard to believe. I imagine that he has always specialised in shorter distance races, as with such a low mileage, wouldn't have had the stamina for longer distances. I was racing sub 38 10ks until I was 49, but if he can still do it at 60 then that's amazing. I will calculate his WAVA for 38 minutes, which I think will be in the high eighties and therefore international standard.

  • Morning Red, our posts crossed. Sorry to hear that Mike is still poorly and hope that he is soon better. You may find that the break from marathons for a while will see your next one is much quicker, depending on the route, of course. Happy and healthy New Year to you too. My next race is the Ryde IoW 10 miler in February, which is very hilly and one of my favourites.

  • My mother was very superstitious and we always removed all signs of Christmas by 12th night. Today I collected up the Christmas cards and removed all the decorations from our balcony. Tomorrow I will strip the tree, remove the lights and pack away my ceramic houses until next year. The house always looks bare to me once all the decorations are removed. Have lots to keep me busy though, am working on emptying the kitchen cupboards so that John can take them down off the walls, then we will get going on removing the horrible old tiles with a view to putting up nice new ones and replacing the linoleum with floor tiles. Then have to find a reliable electrician to update the wiring prior to redecorating the kitchen.  We are getting a new fitted kitchen so will be in a state of upheaval for a while - it will take 6 to 8 weeks until everything is ready to be installed. Will have to exist on takeaways or use the microwave a lot!

Awful weather today, it's cold, rainy and very windy.

Hope Mike will be feeling better very soon, Red.

  • Redhead - hope health problems disappear soon.

HS - I thought you might be intrigued. Here's his Power of Ten listing

    http://www.thepowerof10.info/athletes/profile.aspx?athleteid=10761

  • JB, 38 minutes for 10km by a 60 year old man produces a WAVA of 86.2%. An amazing standard. I will look him up to see if I recognise his name.

  • Oh dear. Red. What is the nature of Mike's illness? Is it a cold or a combination of lots of things? I hope he's on the mend soon and you both get a chance to enjoy that long-awaited celebration.

My cold has dragged on for over a week moving into several different phases. The worst has been the skull cracking headaches every morning, which I'm really not used to. Getting back to work has been difficult.

As I've walked the mile or so back to my car the last two evenings (I purposely park away from the office) I've noticed people of all shapes and sizes that I never saw before out running. I never had the resolve to run out in the dark after work, so hats off to them.

Columba. It must have been a bit disconcerting when everyone disappeared.

WtnMel. With everything in your life, how did you ever get the time to go to work?

  • Everyone seems to be under the weather at the moment. I hope Mike feels better soon Red (and you keep healthy yourself!). Exhausted your cold sounds awful, I think those headaches would have had me ringing in sick, well done for battling on. I do hope you'll be over the worst soon.

As I've managed to go 24 hours without a cough or runny nose I decided (spur of the moment) to try a short run today. Well, it was really a slow trot, and only 2 miles at that, but so far I've no ill effects so will repeat tomorrow, then slowly build back up again. It's 10 days since my last run, but weeks since I've been running consistently due to this persistent virus that just keeps coming back. I hope I've seen the last of it now.

Unfortunately I probably didn't pick the best day, or time, for running. It was bitterly cold and icy and getting dark too, so it was difficult to see where the icy bits were. I was quite relieved to get home. Take care everyone when out on your runs in this freezing weather. Its so easy to miss an icy patch and take a tumble.
  • Aquarius - about the only good thing one can say about illness/injury is that it is a great feeling when you recover and begin to build back up. But a tumble on the ice is the last thing you need. There was a thing on today's news saying research has shown that to avoid a tumble when walking the best thing we can do is 'walk like a penguin' (leaning forward, inspecting the terrain and shuffling). This was serious advice - but I'm not sure what the World Record is for a penguin doing the 10K!

  • Really cold out today, the frost has not evaporated even though we have some sunshine. Not looking forward to having to go out tonight - it's the dog club AGM and I have to be there by 6pm as the accounts have to be reviewed and receipts checked against the amount in the cash box prior to the meeting. Funny, I really don't remember being voted in yet again as auditor at the last AGM!  Selective memory?

  • Morning all,

Today is a rest day, and I've been to the Dentist as I developed a very painful toothache yesterday evening. The pain had gone this morning, but I decided it could return and was lucky to get an early morning appointment. I had another x ray and was prescribed Amoxicillin, and will have root filling in a couple of weeks.

Exhausted, that sounds like a really bad cold and I hope that it soon gets better.

Aquarius, sounds like your cold "is on its last legs," and I do hope that it doesn't return.

JB, pity they didn't show how to avoid a tumble when running. The advice would probably be "don't run on the ice."

I ran 6.56 miles on roads yesterday morning with Karen, and the ground was icy in places. We didn't fancy the club session in the evening because of the expected icy conditions.

I saw on yesterdays news, a 105 year old man cycling round a cycle track. He said afterwards that his legs felt fine, but his arms ached. A truly amazing achievement, great respect!. Apparently, he was a lumberjack in Canada for many years.

  • Morning all,

Dull and overcast with rain on the way. I'm doing a road run with Steve later this morning.

  • no run day for me again, coming to the end of my 2nd week of bronchitis. My auditor chores went off ok last night and I was voted in again for 2017. I think this will be my 7th year in a row.

Did you have a good road run TE.?

Am continuing with clearing out my kitchen cupboards, have another double wall cabinet ready for John to remove, I'm impatient to get rid of them all and the horrible old orange tiles on the walls.

  • ColumbaColumba ✭✭✭

Aquarius - on and up, I hope. At least it's a bit milder now.

TE - I had root canal treatment a few years ago. Completely painless but very tedious.

2.13 miles done this afternoon, concentrating hard as I tried to put the gait analyst's advice into practice. May have worked, because The Knee seemed perfectly happy!

    How are things chez Redhead?

  • Yes, I would like to know that too - how is Mike doing, redhead?

All wall cabinets are now down, we have put them downstairs in one of the guest rooms and I have put all the stuff that was in boxes back into the cabinets for now. John's brother Paul lives in France and is renovating an old farmhouse, converting it into holiday apartments, so we offered the old kitchen cabinets to him and he is going to collect them. This is a thriving business, Paul has a website that invites people to stay at the farmhouse for a cheap rate in return for 3 days of work. One person has to make the evening meal each day. To my amazement, it is working very well, he gets customers from all over the world - Japan, China, Australia, New Zealand, the U.S, also Brits.French lessons are also available from a local lady.

  • Morning all,

Columba, sounds good on the dodgy knee front.

Ran a very, very exhausting 15 mile forest run with Alice yesterday. The fog was very thick for most of the run, and we got bogged down in a flooded field at one stage, taking 20 minutes to cover a mile. I twice sunk up to my knees and on to my hands, which also sank as I tried to use them to stand up. It was scary and the effort dragging our way back to firmer ground, really sapped a lot of our energy. This was only our third mile, so it took all of our willpower to keep going and not throwing in the towel.

I'm running with Sarah this morning, but it will be a recovery run at very easy pace.

  • Personal ads are not welcome on RW.

  • ColumbaColumba ✭✭✭

Oh dear, TE, that sounds very alarming! Did Alice help to pull you out, or was she too busy struggling out herself? You were lucky to keep your shoes.

I spoke too soon as regards my knee. Went out for a little run yesterday and after a mile and a bit it suddenly - from one step to the next - went into a spasm of agony. Nothing to be done except turn round and limp slowly home. Feeling a bit better today but very far from being runnable on. I wouldn't even care to walk very far on it.

  • Columba, Alice didn't have to pull me out, as luckily I managed to extricate myself. She would have helped, but might have got into trouble herself. Thankfully she didn't have a fall. It was a miracle that I didn't lose my shoes, as the suction when I pulled my legs out was very strong. Sorry that your knee is playing up again and hope the gait analysis hasn't made matters worse.

Ran a very slow 4.7 miles with Sarah this morning and my legs felt ok. She had a bad cough which I hope I don't catch.

  • Gosh. Reading all this it's almost a relief to be tucked up in an office every day suffering corporate crap, but not sinking in mud - although the two have a comparative resonance.

Columba: That sounds very familiar. It can happen when you're a bit cold, or you've been sitting around just before, or you go up a hill - or whatever. Perhaps, routinely, before every run, always put one of those tight bandages on the bit that always goes - in this case your knee, after applying a bit of Deep Heat to it first.

I'm still bunged up with cold. I didn't feel like running on Sunday. I will, though, soon.

  • Morning all,

Bright and sunny, but a bit chilly. We  have another 5k time trial on road at club this evening. I've looked back at my previous runs and my best was 21.26 in April 2014. I'll be much slower than that tonight, as I'm nearly 3 years older and still recovering from Sundays forest run with Alice that left us both exhausted. Getting stuck in flooded fields is not recommended.

Exhausted, when you mentioned "sinking in mud," I thought "stinking in mud," because  it really was stinky. Hope your cold soon clears up so that you can start running again.

  • WtnMelWtnMel ✭✭✭

Hi everyone - playing catch-up again after a week away from RW

Columba - if it were down to me, I wouldn't bother with a tree or decorations either. However, I dutifully cleared everything away on Sunday following the family visit. Shame about your club run that wasn't - at least you didn't get lost otherwise you would need a navigator's hat similar to the one HS's club awards to someone each year. I was going to say did you find concentrating on the gait analyst's advice while running helped - but then I saw your later post about your knee being painful. Oh no .. I wonder if changing your running style has affected your knee somehow?

HS - the family get-together went well. And it was nice to see various 'huddles' forming as cousins who don't see each other much, were able to catch up. Sorry to hear you developed a toothache and will need a root filling. I'd be exhausted running 15 miles, let alone in flooded conditions and mud - respect to you Sir! Re your latest post .. I'm already looking forward to my club's time trial and handicap races later this year.

JB6 - the results of that runner, based on minimal training, really are quite remarkable (as David Coleman might have said).

Red - I see Mike has been poorly .. hope he's improved by now.

Exhausted - I've also been pleased to see people (after dark) out running who look like they've just started (takes me back to my hesitant first steps when I 'gave it a go' in 2007 and to begin with, waited for darkness to descend). And to answer your question, I do sometimes wonder how I found time to go to work. Re your latest post - I'm very happy to be missing the 'corporate crap' I used to have to contend with!

Aquarius - pleased to see your 'post lurgy' 2ml trot didn't have any after-effects.

Not a lot of running for me lately with the preparations for the family get-together and Margaret coming down with a nasty cough (which I hope I don't catch). However, I did manage to run yesterday. I was out playing Fetchpoint again and running along roads I don't usually use while trying to squish some bugs. Concentrating on taking the correct left/right turns obviously took my mind off the running itself as I managed 6.6mls - 5mls has been my longest distance lately. Anyway, mission accomplished and I terminated 10 of the 15 bugs that had been errr .. 'bugging' meimage

  • Just dropped by to wish you all a Very Happy and injury free New Year with every success in your racing/running ambitions.  I assume Redhead will be aiming to clock up another 50 marathons and the rest of you chasing age group PB's. Good luck to you all...I'll think of you when I'm bumbling around on my morning jaunts - in the dark when no-one can see me..... Cheers!

Just proving that quality has the edge over quantity!  His times are above average but not, as you say, astonishing.  Mike Hager's sub 34 is astonishing, but quite a few of my M60 contemporaries went sub 36.   Sub 38's were ten a penny - unfortunately for me!
