OK... so I`m going to buy Shiraz a nice new camera for her birthday (she never looks on here so I think I`m safe writing it here)
She always wanted a Nikon D70... and she always wants the biggest lens... so I`m thinking that a new D40X might be a good thing to go for? Does that make sense? Does anyone have any special tips on what to buy? Does anyone have any special tips on what to avoid? Jessops? ebay? others?
Cheers.
Hollywood (who has to be nice to Shiraz as he`s buying yet another bike!)
Hmmm... the prices do seem quite reasonable on lots of these cameras - and Jessop's web specials are actually (surprisingly) OK. Thanks for the advice - I think it's still going to be a Nikon...
Ahh, thanks for that, M. Means the chap I asked ina camera shop was wrong, he reckoned 100x =20.0 Mb But he gave e the impression of a Saturday employee tah was just telling the customer something for the sake of giving an answer, rather than actually knowing what he was talking about.
For the uninitiated (i.e. me) what does shooting 'RAW' mean ? (I'm assuming you're not taking photos of nudes ;0)
I don't really know about shooting raw either, just that it means the images are not compressed into a jpeg mode, and that you get more flexibility for editing images than with other formats.
Hi Hollywood. I was looking at the D40X myself..just beyond my current zero budget.. been watching them on ebay, and I'd say, ok to buy if you get a NEW in Box one, from a big dealer, with a guarantee, and from this country, pref with the two lenses, as it's a cheaper way to go than buying the body, and lenses separately. The chips are cheap enuf, if you go to somewhere like crucial.com/uk.
I reckon the 40X, at 10.2Mp is the nearest to the ultimate D200, which is over a grand, but at less than half the price. In my tests of d200 to D70, the d200 won hands down on the lack of shutter delay..don't know how the D40X compares.
RAW advantage is mainly that it stores ALL the info of the image on the chip, to compromise whichever way you want in future, rather than let the camera compromise (and delete) the way IT wants to.
hi gumps - those are nice shots of the birds. they are so cute! you do seem to be getting the plants properly in focus not the birds though which is a shame. are you using autofocus or manually focusing?
what was your question on aperture?
hi LOK sorry i missed your posts earlier. things are going really well thanks but i've got a miserable cold right now - hence taking photos of races rather than racing in them!
re autofocus - does it focus on the nearest object then? i assumed it was centred
i guess it's also a depth of field issue
i mean, if the birds are inside something as they appear to be, then it's making it slightly dark - thus the aperture automatically opens and that reduces the depth of field doesn't it?
thus the extent to which things away from the subject are also in focus is reduced
so whole thing then gets more sensitive to what your autofocus picks up
i think it's very hard with moving objects like animals because you can get your focus all set and then the damn thing moves and it's no longer set right!

I personally wouldn't buy a camera from ebay
I bought mine from Jessops but they did price match the Internet price
and I've never had a problem with Warehouse Express

I'll let you know what it's like when they deliver it!
8X = 1.2 MB/sec
12X = 1.8 MB/sec
20X = 3.0 MB/sec
25X = 3.8 MB/sec
30X = 4.5 MB/sec
40X = 6.0 MB/sec
60X = 9.0 MB/sec
66X = 10.0 MB/sec
80X = 12.0 MB/sec
90X = 15.0 MB/sec
133X = 20.0 MB/sec
i use 100X with my 350D and its fine even when shooting RAW

The site has loads of info about cameras in general.
I've been thinking of using flickr, but the signing up for Yahoo thing is putting me off.

i'd be slightly warey of buying from Jessops now - i sense they maybe about to go bankrupt
does anyone use picasa for photo sharing?
i like flickr alot
but since google have bought picasa, i thought maybe they had something special there
also my brother in american was raving about picasa ages ago
but i don't really get what advantage there is with them
I can't think why you have moved there M. it looks awful ;-)
