  • It won't have done you any harm to have run it at that pace SJ, you're building miles at the moment, the speed will come. I must admit remembering all the times I couldn't run and wanted to will often help get me out of the door. I can swim a reasonable FC (apart from the fact that one shoulder is permanently impaired after my big bike accident a few years ago so I'm a bit one sided) but my pulled muscle is about half way down my side so gets a lot of work. I can't swim breastroke as my knees are shot and to be honest I'm not sure that would be any better for resting the muscle either.
If you think you can or you think you can't you're probably right.

LMH - sorry to hear about the problems. Sounds like a week or two complete recovery might make sense, even if you'll find it difficult!

TR - solid 10k there. You're always better over the longer stuff so it's not surprising that you're lacking a bit of speed. I still think you'll get close to 1:20 at the HM, but maybe marginally outside.

Only 37M for me last week, but pleasingly I managed 16M on Saturday (my longest run since 1 May) inc. an off-road parkrun after 7M "warm-up" in 18:19 which felt pretty comfortable (I was in 3rd place after one lap taking it fairly easy but picked up the pace on the 2nd lap and won by about 40s). The 6M home felt tough to start with but easier once I got back into the rhythm of a steady pace and I felt like I could have carried on for a fair bit further without any problems.

LMH - gutting! There are still 14 weeks until London though, so maybe take some time completely off and see if it clears before writing it off?

TR - that looks like improvement to me. Keep at it and it will come. 4 weeks is a long time in terms of training adaptations and improvement.

Wardi - nicely done to beat last year's time.

    sj - 15m is 15m. Well done.

    Padams - Sounds like a good 16m.

I'm pretty drained after this weekend. I got my double in yesterday to make 94 for the week, but have also been up to my eyeballs in study - my OH got stuck in work very late both days over the weekend (emergency ops - she's a veterinary nurse) so I took advantage to get in as much study as possible until it got to the stage yesterday where I was too tired to read any more. I've got an assignment due on Thursday so I need to grin and bear it for a few more days, and adapt the training intensity if necessary to marshal my energy reserves.
  • LMH - I am with the consensus, get better and revisit.  You've so much training and miles in your legs which is a massive advantage.  OK you may need to revise timings but suspect by much and VLM is such a positive marathon running experience
TR - Thats a great 10k performance.  I am in the best marathon shape ever and would struggle to be much quicker than that and a great training boost too.
SJ - what a difference a month makes, good work fella.
Wardi - Congrats, a solid hm time.
Padams - Good you felt fresh at the end of your LR after such a period of no LR.
TT - Cracking mileage, love your motivation.
9m with 4 faster in just under 25 mins for me y'day, which was spot-on.  Just a couple of faster short ones left.  Looking forward to my mara-oliday especially seeing what this weeks weather looks like.

  • LMH - 'not' by much
  • Thanks for the birthday wishes, all!

SJ -- interesting that you've had ankle problems but running was OK. I've had that a lot recently, usually when I've been sitting around for a long time -- when I tried to get out of the train on Sat I couldn't put any weight on it, had to hobble to a platform bench to manipulate it, but raced fine the next day. I still haven't really sussed it. Possible things were driving in stiff shoes (but I've not driven anywhere for weeks), and a tight spot in what might be the peroneus tertius muscle.

    Quality LR there TT.

Sorry to hear you're still suffering though LMH, hope things improve soon. It's a long time until London though -- you might still do that off a short campaign?

Great to see you racing again TR!

Wardi -- a pleasure to catch up with you properly at last, and well done on your race too. And yes I had a surprisingly good run (as I did at Brass Monkey last year, except more so this time) -- although it wasn't an A-race, I did taper for it and was certainly giving it full beans. Here's a shameless copy & paste:

Race report for the running geeks: this race is properly flat -- just two bridges to cross twice -- and not too bendy, so it's fast if the wind is kind. There was a bit of a breeze today but it was as I like it, headwind on the way out (when the group is bunched anyway), tailwind on the way back (when I ideally like to make a move, so no good drafting, and things thin out anyway). So up until 5.5M I stayed bedded in behind others, things feeling slightly easier than I'd like but still doing about 5:50/M into the wind at 153 bpm. As soon as we turned a corner, I ditched the group and was making time. On the long straights with a tailwind I felt totally focussed and was reeling in others, though it was mainly them slowing TBH. Things only started to hurt when I really did amp up the effort in the last mile in an effort to snatch every last place I could (sorry Rich, nice to meet you at last and a fine run!). Scores on the doors: 1:15:28 (chip), my fastest half since 2013 and highest WAVA in anything ever at 84.86%. £25 for 2nd MV45, 34 of 1478 overall (a quality field). Pleasing.

  • Well done Charlie - it feels good to get older and faster doesn't it:-)

    What are you studying TT?

I love the way you can just pick up your running Padams and am more than slight jealous.
Jealous of you heading to warmer climes too OuchOuch, this morning was one of the rare ones when I was reasonably happy not be heading out for a run.........

I really don't know if I can pick up and race off a short campaign, as you know I usually keep my long runs in all year round and seem to have done better off increased mileage, London is too much of a faff if I'm not going for a time, my mentee is running Boston (Lincs) the week before and I was planning on going to support him anyway so if not in PB shape would rather go and pace him round for his GFA (3.20 - he's old like me:-) but never say never, I'm making no plans, just trying to stay sane and get better and will then see where I am.
If you think you can or you think you can't you're probably right.

Nice surge in the home straight to maintain 34th place Charlie !
  • Hi Guys/Gals,
I'm back and still full of cold... just catching up but seen TR 10k time, superb matey and on way back bigtime!
  • Blimey you're looking lean Charlie!

Where are your photo's then Wardi?

Hope you can shake it off quickly Pug.
If you think you can or you think you can't you're probably right.
  • Great photo - some people just look super-quick - and CW and TT you fall into that camp. Great race CW, always great to give yourself a pleasant surprise.  48 the new 30.
  • TRTR ✭✭✭
SJ - slow long runs are exactly where you want to be at this stage. Running fast and long so early is a campaign ruiner.

CW - well executed race there then, well played. Yellow card for the arm warmers though, at least you didnt have sunglasses too.

Whilst i cant convert 10k times to marathons as well as the likes of Jools and OO, I do agree with padams that I'm more of a dirty diesel, so would go better over a 1/2. A marathon sees me fade a bit again due to being heavy.

I was thinking along wardis lines of 37:42 being worth 1:23:0X, a converter backed that up. I'm going to pugometer that to 1:22 due to there being 10k faster courses than yday. There will be a training boost from yday too, so I have entered chichester 10k which is a week  before Worthing as a better indicator.
With the boost from yday, a faster course and a few more weeks training, I reckon i can gain ~10sec/mile at chichester. I have a better chance of running 1:20 if I expect to do it rather than hope to do it.

    6m easy lunchtime.

Cracking pic that!! My best mate is in the background (orange vest), and I worked with the lad behind Charlie for 2 years at Sweatshop (and I'm really good mates with him too). Weird how all three of you finished so close together!

In other news - got my MRI results back today. Looks like I need hip surgery. Arse. Referred for a CT scan and then to an orthopedic specialist. Looks like there's some arthritis in the joint as well as dysplasia of the joint, so I've been told to expect a hip replacement sometime in the future. Super! Looks like my days of frequenting the Red Lion might have gone, but we'll see.
  • I've been wondering how you're getting on LS21, sorry to hear the news but don't despair yet - I was told that I need knee replacements last year, but fortunately not yet. Do a lot of research and get referred to a surgeon who is going to understand about your running and want to get you back to being able to do it if they can.

TR in four race entries this year shocker!
If you think you can or you think you can't you're probably right.
  • Tr - I wear size 9 in Adidas, Salomon, and the Saucony ride so I guess they come up "normal", solid 10K mate.
CW - Great race at Brass Monkey
LS - shit news, keep smiling.
Pug - Great run at Disney, balls well and truly put on the line.
SJ - Looks like a good solid 15.
    Padams - Nice 16.

I'm plodding, overweight and the weather is shit, got to love January,  :)

Sounding good to go OO. Good luck!

Very nicely done CW. Top stuff!

LMH - psychology through the OU.

SL - plodding, overweight, and the weather is shit. Snap! I've got 11lbs over pb weight right now!

    LS21
    - as per FB, sorry to hear your news.

MLR yesterday with some mixed paces and mixed hills. Some easy, then steady miles, then 4 x 280m hills - hard up, 100m jog at the top, hard back down, 100m jog at the bottom, plus 2 x 420m hills (quads were too thrashed to do any more), then a few miles at low 6s. Cumulative mileage made it tougher than it sounds.
  • Ha thanks Wardi, I was definitely giving it my all there!

LS21 -- as I said elsewhere, best of luck that the surgery sorts you out assuming it goes ahead. At least you know what's up now. I introduced myself to your mate there just after we'd finished, recognising him from pictures of Windermere antics I think!

TR -- not just arm warmers, but matching (ish) ones to go with the hoops in my vest. A garish contrast with my gloves though, I don't really do fashion.

Running yesterday was a bad idea, I was properly DOMSd by the time I tried to creak home. I drove to work today (first time ever to this office other than when I've had to for business trips) as I've got a load of junk to take to the nearby dump anyway. An exercise-free day! 48 may be the new 30, but my legs recover from races like I'm 60...

  • Interesting course TT - are you thinking of a career change?

Is it your ultra next Charlie?

LS - shame surgery is involved, but you have a diagnosis now.PP ran again after hip surgery, although may be being able to run again afterwards needs you to wear women's shorts.

Stu - I'll order a pair of rides sometime then in my usual size, I had to go 1/2 size up in the triumphs.

LMH- probably about time I got another abo number I won't use too.

Cw- you did well to find a pair that small.

6m inc 30min of 150sec effort/30sec rest today. Legs weren' bothered by Sundays race.
  • WardiWardi ✭✭✭
LS21.. nice to see you again on here though as on FB wretched news prolonging your comeback.

TT.. nice mixed session though sounds painful :s   BTW both you & SL in post Xmas bloater shock, surely not :o

TR.. in defence of Charlie's arm warmers there was a raw southerly blowing at us until half way on Sunday.  I had a t-shirt on under the vest and 2 pairs of specialist gloves on to keep the Raynauds at bay - thankfully they worked!  Looking at the forecast until the weekend up here I think the treadie will be pressed into service more than once.

Charlie.. speaking of 60 year old legs mine were a bit stiff and cranky on Monday but a gentle 4m eased out some of the discomfort.  I managed a 4.2m + 7.3m double today so I'm pleasantly surprised with the recovery.
  • TRTR ✭✭✭
Wardi - I had a Helly base layer on under my t shirt Sunday, I'm not questioning the keeping warm. Good work on the double, that's got to be my next move to get some more miles in.
  • LMH - Your description of your swimming techniques still sound better than my drowning act.

Padams - nice parkrun win rolled into the long run.

TT - best of luck with the assignment for Thursday. I wish I was only 11lbs overweight.

OO - nice confidence booster ahead of the mara-oliday (like that - will be nicking it)

CW - awesome result at BM and cracking picture. Googled peroneus tertius muscle and figured I could have some inflammation of one of the Peroneal tendons. Is sore if I press a particular spot but not stopping me from running. Will manage it and seek help if required. As with Google the odd oddity crops up... ended up reading about Chinese reflexology and Shen Mai - a pressure point in precisely the area I feel discomfort.

Pugster - rest up big man!

TR - noted re running too long too fast. Not sure I could anyway at the minute. More confidence boosters required before the wick is turned up.

LS21 - sorry to read you news.

SL - plodding - check, overweight - check, weather - check.

Wardi - I had to sport tights tonight - shocking I know :)

Start of week 2 of my improvised P&D schedule tonight consisted of the classic 8 miles with 4 miles at half-mara pace. No idea what my HM pace is so opted for target 170 bpm on my HR monitor. Worked a treat as it felt sufficiently hard enough and the 4 miles came out at 6:57 min/mile average and bang on 170 bpm average HR.

Timed to perfection as I got the effort finished just before the sleet and hail storm that I cooled down in(sic).
  • Wardi - I managed to put 20lbs on since Wendover Woods (25th of Nov) which I reckon is a personal best, get off the treadmill and get outside, I thought you northerners were meant to be tough.  :D

SJ - Which marathon are you targetting?

OO - I may have missed it, did you enter the Mont Blanc Marathon?

  • LS21- That sucks.
SL -  For MdMb yes entered and massively looking forward to it - so will be after some tips on training some time soon and poles or not poles?  Got the kit - look like an ultra wannabee.
Some bizarrely impressive weight gain going on - the forbidden land. My theory is sub 3 marathoners, esp those of you at the very pointy end, are considered yet kinda extreme personalities.
  • OO - Hopefully see you there, still trying to convince the SPO to let me go.
  • TR -- actually my previous pair of "XS" size arm-warmers were too big about my biceps, I'm a lost cause! Nice recovery by you and Wardi. By contrast my legs were still pretty wrecked this morning for my run to work, should be past "peak DOMS" by now though.

LMH -- yes ultra next in 10 days, I need to figure out my kit and navigation etc. Should be a good adventure!

SL -- elite-level weight gain. But starting from way low down I guess...
  • some great stuff going on but also some bad news on possible hip replacement LS... reallyu sorry to hear this BUT lets wait and see hey...

Cold is starting to go and ran 9 ile Monday and 5 on the treadmill yesterday as it went ice cold and started snowing here... feel like a warmed up turd at the moment... legs have NOTHING and I mean nothing... spots of soreness everywhere so obviously that marathon took more out of me than I thought...

So will wind my way back in and jog around helsby half on Sunday...

  • SL - That would be great. As this is one of >6 mara-holidays for 2018, the SPO is also coming - its my treat apparently.  Am staying in Les Houches fyi Sat-Monday.

OO - taking the SPO too is only fair, and will keep you in the good books, which will let you continue.

After a block of daily running to get Tough, I did my first run commute does couple of years today with a 5 and 9, could have done more too but didn' want to push my luck.
