  • Wardi - I cross train with spin and Circuits weekly, do pilates on a tuesday and do really sparodic stretching. I do need to get a proper timeframe slotted in for an hour and follow a full routine somewhere.

Joe - best wishes to Katie.

Menn it is amusing hearing from some of the fast guys of yesteryear who usually claim they never did any stretching!  I do a bit most days but have to be careful - my wife is a yoga teacher so I get told off if I don't stretch correctly. :o

A useful 4.2m + 8m double today.  2nd run out with the club tonight, not too cold or windy and not wet either for a change.
  • Menn - You sound like a pro athlete with that regime!

    Wardi -
Alot seems to have changed since yesteryear. It amazes me that those guys were producing such incredible times without knowing what we know today around training, nutrition, recovery and with the technology advances we've seen. I thought it was interesting that Charlie Spedding, who is the 4th fastest Briton of all time over the marathon (running 2:08:xx in 1985) thought that modern athletes were overtraining.

No running yet this week and possibly there won't be any at all as i'm laid low with a cold. I'm taking the positives that my legs will appreciate the rest and so hopefully i'll feel fairly fresh whenever I start back up as long as I ease into it!
  • WardiWardi ✭✭✭
Joe.. my policy with colds is to over dress by a layer or two and go for a 6-7m run - try and sweat it out!  Not recommended if it has migrated to your chest.  Get well soon!

10m for me today, nice sunny day again and the 3mph winds were a bonus.
  • I have a mild cold -- mainly just a feeling of malaise in my head, a slight cough, sinuses clear though. So my policy is to keep running but not do anything hard. And in fact I seem to feel better after a run, not worse -- odd.
  • WardiWardi ✭✭✭
Hope your grogginess disappears soonest Charlie, there has been a lot of illness about around Xmas & New Year.
Yet another nice day up here, temps up to about 9/10 degrees.  Next week looks wet/windy so I thought I would get out for a 10.4 miler while the conditions are pleasant.
  • Wardi - your ticking over nicely.
Joe - Good attitude, your legs will thank you.
Cold free here and 4 runs this week totalling 35m so far with only effort being a 6m tempo segment in a 13 miler last night which came out around 6.30.

    Good going OO.

Running with a head cold is fine CW.

Big P and D week this week with 2 x mlr, an LT run and mp run today. It was way too icy for the LT run so it became 10 with strides (on a safe stretch). P and D said 18 with 10mp today. I have already done 10 av 6.29 and 10 av 6.28 so was hoping for an improvement. 8 easy, then got stuck into the mp, which all seemed to be into some breeze, first 3 came in av 6.40 but that was the worse of the wind. Final av 6.28 (so 3av ~6.40, 7 av~6.24). Not sure about mp, more like 10m balls to the wall. I wish you could have repeatable conditions for these runs.

Onwards and upwards, chichester 10k next weekend and worthing 1/2 following week.

After a tough week like that I'm not surprised that MP session seemed hard TR, well toughed out and good luck with those races.  No significant wind up here this week, all set to change from tomorrow though.

Similarly I've had a heavy mileage week, tired legs yesterday so stuck to an easy 4.3m wearing a t-shirt & shorts for the first time in a while.  Just to confirm the leg weariness I realised in the first mile of the Parkrun today that my legs were off the pace, ended up 30 secs slower than last week.  Undeterred I rounded it up afterwards to 11.3m for the day.

TR - That's a cracking MP run, and great motivation with some races coming up. Keep on riding the wave.
Wardi - Not surprised you feel a bit heavy legged, you've had a couple of successful full on weeks. Great you kept it going for a 11m run banked.
18 miles for me, first 8 @7.50 then bumped into a couple of club mates, going the way I just came from so the next 8m in @7 mm and as always when running in company felt so much easier, 2m CD and job done. 60m for the week, will take that. Bird watch: 2 pheasants and a buzzard.
  • Nice work TR. P&D seems to be working its magic for you.

I need some magic - having a nightmare first world issues week (Random Emails held back by server) which amongst many other work problems has resulted in my missing final deadline for VLM. I received my acceptance to championship bit it was a week after it was sent so havent paid money over or sent final form and computer registration says its now closed (Friday at 1700hrs). Will be dropping them a note but not particularly hopeful :'( Im now open for suggestions for alternative decent Marathons around the same time.

Running wise Im going quite well and starting to hit pace zones and the like on the track so starting to feel more like it

OO - nice to have some company i guess. I see plenty of pheasants they either run down the middle of the lane thinking im chasing them, or go into vertical take off out the hedgerow and scare the crap out of me.

Menn - hopefully you can smooth it over esp as it wasnt your fault. Failing that the fast Welsh mara (Newport?) or manc?

8m easy today to get another week rolling.
  • Looks like another top week there TR and Wardi. Wouldn't be worrying about parkrun pace if the mileage is up there! Not sure where the wind is but the rain has certainly arrived.

I'm generally over the cold now. given I had another low mileage week and it's a p&D rest day tomorrow I treated today's 15 miler as a free run, especially as I was really not looking forward to it. Ran it at 7:20 min/mile pace which is TMP + 12% so actually about right. Hopefully this week actually goes to plan!

Menn - aarh, hope you get it sorted. Geneva May 10th, I am running it.
TR - it was a good group, a 2.35 marathon runner, a couple of sub 3 runners so ensured we went a decent lick. Bird watch: The wife too of course when I got back.  ;)

Nice 15 miler Joe, good to be over the cold bug.
OO.. that's a good steady/brisk mix of paces in an 18 miler.  Wildlife around here is mostly red kites, deer and squirrels.
Menn.. that's a damn nuisance as it's not down to your own neglect.  TBH VLM are usually pretty dismissive of late entries but I wish you luck with your efforts anyway.  Manchester, Paris, Rotterdam, Vienna, Hamburg, Prague are all April/May.  OO's Geneva suggestion also looked interesting when I looked up the details.

Club handicap 8m race today so decided to run it around MP given my legs weren't up for racing flat out.  Enjoyed the brisk effort despite a gradually strengthening southerly wind and squally showers.  Couldn't resist rounding it up to 10m, 64m for the week.  Chucking it down by the time we finished.

hi all.  been lurking but not much to report from my end as still suffering with same back/glute hamstring issues i've had since just pre Abingdon, so i can't train properly.  been just plodding along trying to get some miles in for January (averaging around 60pw) at least, after doing next to nothing Nov and Dec.  I've finally got round to getting a referral letter from GP so see a specialist (well almost, need to pick it up still) so maybe i will end up getting an injection or something eventually as Wardi has suggested (i tried physio for a while, no change).

Re LM and late entries, i actually managed (just, after a lot of back and forth and begging and being told to keep it quiet) to get them to let me enter late last year, but it wasn't easy, they were extremely reluctant, but i do think if you have a valid enough reason, they might relent as they did eventually with me.

TR - that's a heck of a lot of quality you are getting in this far out, you look like you are heading for a sub 250 to me at the least, not just sub 255.  Be intereting to see how you go in the upcoming races.

anyone upgrading their entry from FGFA to champs start?  It was supposed to be from today but i can't work out how to do it.

top training going on from the other usual suspects OO, Men, Wardi, CW, CD.  Healing vibes to LMH.

I've got a 10km, a road half and a trail half comign up over next 5 weeks, so im hoping i might race myself fit - or i will break, lets see!

  • Not good re VLM Menn - hope you can get it sorted.

It chucked it down here yesterday too, but not until I'd got 23 miles done and dusted.  I've been talked into entering Chichester next weekend, so see you there TR.
  • I did my first 26M for VLM yesterday, but much slower than CD's sprightly 23 I noticed. I too am just getting over a mild cold -- and once more, I found I actually felt better after my run. I have my first ever 30K race on 16th Feb, so a guaranteed PB (and PW) to come.
  • Hope they sort it out for you Mennania.

Sorry to hear that you're still struggling selbs but not happy to hear that you are intending to desert me! What's wrong with the FGFA start this year?

You're not doing the Stamford 30k are you Charlie?
If you think you can or you think you can't you're probably right.
  • TRTR ✭✭✭
Wardi - good idea re that run.

Selbs - good to see you are getting going a bit. Lots of time yet to speed up the legs.

CD - oooh nice, ill look out for you. Parking is round the outside of the motor cct, and then laps of the cct for wu and wd. Looks a bit too windy to be a quick day, but it'll be a good blow out, level is high too.
  • LMH -- yep, Stamford 30K. A clubmate happened to have a spare place so I took the transfer on a whim. So if you're doing it too, see you there!
  • Once was enough for me Charlie - but hopefully you won't get the snow and high winds that I did.
If you think you can or you think you can't you're probably right.

Good to hear from you Selbs, 60 mpw still decent, hope you get it sorted.
LMH - Yes, it was this time last year the snows came!! 30k on that must have been testing.
Wfh, so 12 miles trail run this afternoon, pace all over the pace with the ups and downs but one thing consistent cold cold cold.
  • WardiWardi ✭✭✭
Hope the weather gods are kind to you in your new event Charlie.  I'm sure you will find a nice loop for a convenient 12.1k warm down as is traditional.  :)
TR.. no sign of a non-windy day up here either until next week.  Looking forward to the V50 smackdown.   ;)
Oh, and impressive long runs CD & Charlie.
Selbs.. sorry to hear you are struggling, for an injection a physio with a needle therapy qualification is what you will need (they don't all have this).  If you are still able to tick over at circa 60mpw it should keep you fit while you get sorted.
Any improvement in your knee LMH
5m easy yesterday and my legs felt suitably recharged so got a 7m+4m double done today.  Windy, cold & squally showers this morning so I was grateful for my trusty Goretex jacket.
  • It was a couple of years ago that I ran it OuchOuch.

I'm definitely not as aware of it Wardi. Cold and windy here too yesterday.
If you think you can or you think you can't you're probably right.

    LMH, CW, Wardi  -   Stamford 30K  -   "fond" memories - did this in 2000 & 2001 ;

one of my more vivid race memories - in conditions akin to LMH -
icy wind and snow flurries -was racing hard, shoulder to shoulder with a clubmate, maybe 5K to go, and he suddenly let go an expletive laden rant, something like "whose  **** idea was it to do this  **** race in these **** conditions , and he took off , taking about 2 minutes out of me by the finish !!!   Happy (?)  days  :)
  • Stamford 30k sounding like a real wild one. Love that little story Birch. The moral of the story is that an angry runner makes a better runner?

Miles sound good there Wardi. I haven't got a truly lightweight waterproof to run in. Gore tex worth it's weight in gold?

Best of luck this weekend CD and TR. I can't see anything but fast times given the way you've both been running.

My training week is well underway with 8 miles yesterday and 11 miles today. Was convinced it was 11 miles in the plan but turns out it was 12. Oh well! I don't normally run in the evening but staying in London this week for work and I'm not sure i'd appreciate doing the run at 6am either! Happy to get back as was cold and hungry! This will be no news to anyone but running in London is no fun. a 10 min first mile dodging human traffic before I could open up with laps around Regents Park.
  • Oh dear, what have I let myself in for with the Stamford 30K? A clubmate at a pub quiz on Sunday also muttered something darkly about "that" race. Still, my only chance for a "PB" these days!

My cold has now gone but my legs seem pretty stuffed after my training marathon, despite the reasonably gentle pace. Might try mixing in some bike days to give the poor muscles a rest from endless commute doubles, if they can't handle it so well these days.
  • The hills will be a shock to your flatlander legs Charlie, never mind what the weather gods may throw at you:-) There is at least a hall you can wait in before the start.

rj - I thought my inov8 jacket was the bees until I bought an OMM one (half price in the sale). A good jacket makes all the difference if you're going to get out regardless of the weather.
If you think you can or you think you can't you're probably right.

Joe - have fun in London. I do something similar when there on work, stay around Hyde Park and run round that. I really like it.
CW - any plan for the 30k or see how you feel on the day.

A strange day of running for me. First up a gentle 7 miler lunch time run which ended with a nice chat with a guy I haven't seen for 4 years but now will be seeing him at a half marathon we are both doing in 2 weeks. But what took the biscuit was whilst saying cheerio and running slowly a fellow runner made a big effort to get in front of me, gave me the stare which hit a nerve. So spent the next half a mile on his shoulder before burning him off in the next half. Very unlike me as normally don't give a damn if someone runs past.

Backed up with a mixed pace 9 miles this evening in the day light (light here until 5.30 at the mo) generally around 7.15 but with a few 6.30 thrown in for good measure.  Thankfully calmer though decided to bin the short rep session with my mate after a few short reps, as really not my thing and did the tempo type mile session instead. So 16 for the day.
