If it's only coming back for one year, I'' have to do it. I've done a few events in Cumbria but it will be my first marathon up there. Better scenery than London!
I met the organiser for this earlier in the week. They seem to be getting things together really well - I think I came out of the chat committed either to running (my preference) or marshalling so I shall be there no matter what.
In terms of route - it is basically a lap of Windermere Lake. Starts near Ambleside. The road will be closed for the first four miles or so out to Hawkshead shortly after which is the only really significant hill. We then follow the lanes down towards Newby Bridge and then up the main road through Bowness and Ambleside back to the start. When I expressed concern about traffic on the main road, I was reassured that they are paying a traffic management company who will work with local 'powers that be' to ensure safety including (I believe) temporary speed limits and such.
I'm sure there's plenty more information to come but they seem to on top of things so far - about 150 entrants to date.
My understanding is that Brathay have taken on the task of organising this as part of the celebrations of their diamond jubilee.
I don't know of any intent to run it again in the future but suspect that they may be persuadable if its a success. I'm sure that one of their measures of 'success' will be the level of interest and number of entrants - the more who turn out, the harder it will be not to repeat - market force at work just like for every other event.
OK then. We have Flanker, BIR, Hippo and myself 'doing the district double'. DazTheSlug is a bit of a wimp and so is only doing the one marathon. There might be a few other mad folk on the Stockport thread that I can persuade, but this is GMR weekend too and some people are keen on crowded city races.. We could all have a lovely weekend with lots of pasta and beer and gin........
There's no 'rules and regulations' up on the website yet. I suppose if you enter now and then later they stipulate a cut-off then you could ask them to make an exception for people who signed up beforehand!
the big answer:if Windermere is as hilly as some have suggested, I would have thought that making an effort with WP would be the best plan (with it having no significant uphills and very significant downhills n'all), having a few beers after then wouldn't adversely affect staggering round Windermere the next day, followed by more beer.
mort - I've also just entered the Derwentwater 10 at the beginning of November, I intend to enter the Four Villages Half in January and then either the Coniston 14 or the Ironbridge Half at the end of March. If these all go well, I JUST MIGHT consider the Windermere or Anglesey Marathons...
I really feel like I'm holding my end up here. I'm not listening to you or Hippo any more :op
If you want to rope me into anything else daft, how about volunteering to join me in a relay team for the Man v Horse next June...?
I will try my MudRocs after Garstang. tbh I am getting increasingly worried, not about the uphills, but about whether my dodgy knees will stand up to the downhills (
Daz- I have decided that as I work every weekend that I'm not running, I will only do non-local races next year if they are at least 26.2 miles.
With your dodgy knees I would start very gently with the hills because as I have said the fell race I did completely ******ed up my knees for a few days and my knees are usually OK.
Hippo- Do you mean Daz should sign up for the RW 24 hour race instead of or as well as the District Double?!?!?

PH - I'm sure you've got enough warning to sort out your on call rota!

Going Round the Twist, more likely.
Everybody:
STOP LISTENING TO MORTICIA!
I did it once and regretted it.
STOP BEFORE IT IS TOO LATE!
I like the sound of the pasta/beer, though...
I wonder if they need marshals?
I could then at least watch you all staggering around in a daze...
Garstang, Famous Grouse, Stockport 10, a marathon in Feb/Mar/April and then the District Double in May. Sorted.
You can add any other races you like. These are just the compulsory ones. Have you tried your Mudrocs yet?
the big question: run hard on WP for a time and stagger around windmere, or take it easy on them both?

Hipps & mort - I don't want you to leave me alone, I enjoy your insane ramblings.
I just want to make it clear that I am not listening...
