Whilst up in the lakes last month I ran the section from Newby Bridge to Ambleside, and was surprised how easy the hills felt but sure they will feel steeper when I have run down the west side first.
If you are looking for a flat marathon, there is Blackpool Marathon in June. That is 2 laps up and down the front, which is flat as you get.
You'll have to do a list of your top marathons to do next year and then sign up for the top few and see later on whether you can do any more. My colleagues are very good about accomodating my marathon needs, but if I have a weekend off, I usually end up doing a 48 hour shift the following weekend to make up for it!
Maxpower- Trouble is with Blackpool I have yet to hear anything good about it, which is a shame as I live in the NW so it would be a good one for me.
If anyone wants a flat marathon, Mablethorpe is so flat, the whole course seemed quite surreal to someone like me that lives on the edge of the Peak District!
Well pick one more and then just try and look forward to them for now. I must sign up for that Kent Challenge one. I printed off the form and have been carrying it around in my diary for a couple of months now! Along with the DD one, but I don't know if I'll do that even though the photos of it are so tempting. Will be back later- Must go and shower and school run etc etc....
Don't be put off by the hilly nature of the course. As you correctly say, it is not REALLY hillt...they haven't made us run up Kirkstone or anything like that. Having said that, it is definitely a long way froma flat course. The first 4-5 miles top hawkshead are 'undulating' and on a twisty road ie lots of short-ish rises and dips and probably quite hard to establish a nice early ryhtmn. After that is is not too bad as you say...but there is a very nasty sting in the tale (only 600m or so!!!)
Hipps- You could easily do a sub 5 marathon if you wanted. After your Loch Ness PB on the back of several marathons, no proper marathon training and no taper either, you have proved that it is well within your capabilities. You just need to focus on one race like most people do!
Just because it didn't work in the past doesn't mean it won't work in the future. I was amazed at how brilliantly you did last weekend. I just can't imagine finding the energy every weekend like you do. You have so much determination and guts that I am absolutely positive you will go sub-5 next year, if you choose to do so.
Not at Windermere though, from what's been said previously!
Cape Wrath looks very exciting indeed, but I am more keen on my 'district double', even if the Windermere one has accompanying traffic! No traffic at White Peak either, just a couple of manned road crossings. Lovely race.
