Debbo - if you have then right on your current shoes then try to feel where your foot is and replicate the relative position on your new ones.
Basically you want your foot positioned so that your big toe joint is directly above the centre of the pedal. You then need to make slight adjustments to allow for individual differences and for pronation etc. Most people ride with the cleat pushed as far forward as it will go so you could start there and then move it slightly if you are getting hot spots and/or numb toes.
Thanks Lindi. If I don't get out the door I'll never get the shoes anyway.
I've found that my feet are getting increasingly numb with the ones I've got. It used to happen after 4 hours or so, now it's after an hour. I'm not sure why that is.
Debbo - you are probabally pushing harder than you did when you first started and hence the problem arrives sooner. I was getting numb toes on my right foot recently so moved my cleat back a couple of ml. it's not cured it totally but it is better.
Try to wiggle your toes every so often to get some blood into them.
I'll try moving my cleats back - I wiggle my toes often but it doesn't really help. It's definitely the ball of my foot/toes that are numb, so not the straps.
Debbo, it could be the straps because as your feet swell the pain could be refered to your toes/balls. On Candy's advice I've ditched the socks and loosened the straps and I'm doing much better. It does mean I fall off even more (if that's possible) though as my ankles are not strong enough to clip out easily with the straps loose. Now getting off my bike involves a very complex set of events 1. see danger ahead 2. decide between braking and uncliping 3. haivng debated order in head, try to simultaneously brake and unclip 4. tighten straps, 5. kick heels inwards (careful not to kick bike over) 6. place foot on ground, try to balance. 7. say prayers and that the bike gods for letting me live another day If 4-7 fail, pick self up off ground, apply antiseptic cream, text Zuppy/Chcukles to advice of incoming wounded...
Well at least you didn't choose your cleats purely for asthetic purposes, couldn't have red plastic lumps on the bottom of my shoes. Better ITB than fashion suicide.
What are you on about Candy... if it is behind the stem you bang your knees but in front of the seat post is fine so long as you don't wee on your lunch by mistake.
Actually mine doesn't fit either end so I've got it on my down tube - unconventional but does the job.

You got mail
Debs, straps to tight on your feet?
Useless for me

I always unclip when there is any chance of danger. It's easy to clip in again and much less painful than falling off.
I also have my pedals quite loose so I can unclip easily.
except at train stations, onto grass, when being run over, at traffic lights, at the top of the road...
Only fell off the once, when I fitted my looks!
I sort of forgot I had these new fangled clips on and promtly could't put my foot down when I stopped...........
I asked the local TT guys to sort my pedals and "uncliping" action out.
Almost look a pro now

Under the seat chafes somewhere else...
Candy if you don't huit your knees do you have girly thin or stumpy legs then - or do you cycle knees out like you are stealing a kids bike?
"tall and customised"
I take back the "Stumpy or Girly?"
I'm leaving the "cycle like you're stealing a kids bike" though.
That's a rhetorical question by the way - I need no ass hanging out advice. My ass knows its place.
