For the last year or so I have experienced a burning pain in the same spot on my outer right thigh. It only happens maybe once a month and the best way I can describe it is that it feels like someone has thrown acid on to a maybe 2cm square on my leg. Only lasts a couple of seconds thank goodness but the pain is enough to stop me in my tracks. I was wondering if it might be connected to exercise although there doesn't seem to be any discernible pattern to it. Any ideas?

From your description, the likeliest diagnosis is meralgia paraesthetica, which is a pain on the outer thigh caused by compression of a nerve that supplies that area of skin - the lateral cutaneous nerve of the thigh - and happens in non-athletes as well as in runners (most sufferers seem to be slightly well-padded women). It's annoying but not dangerous. A physiotherapist may be able to help.
