tv, phone & computer

Moving house in a month and need to decided what to get in my home.

I want decent tv but don't really mind about the phone & broadband package - but it does need to be affordable.

What does everyone else have and what do you recommend?

  • I recommend you find a house near a phone exchange so you will get the fastest possible adsl broadband. You can check the speed of the house using the BT website with the house's phone number. You should expect a speed of up to 8mb although some companies are now offering faster speeds (ADSL 2). Check the terms of the broadband offer carefully to ensure the download limit is not too low for your usage, the duration of the contract and whether you can move house with it. You may also want to get broadband via cable - Sky/Telewest. You can easily share a single broadband connection by buying a WiFi router.
You can get analogue/digital tv from almost any house but may want to get Sky or Telewest cable for extra channels and/or HDTV. Check if the house is covered by these services.
There are a number of companies that offer a package of broadband+tv+landline phone which can offer excellent savings. In the not too distant future mobiles are highly likely to be offered in these bundles as well.
  • Sadly my choice of house will be by price then location - tight budget.

Will def take the advice on everything else - I think a pakage will be my best bet.
  • You can get some really good packages that include free telephone calls. At the moment we're doing that with Onetel but I think BT are getting more competitive now and are coming up with something even better which includes a television package. I might be way behind though. There is a website whereby you can search for best package for your area (url= www.BroadbandChecker.co.uk)www.BroadbandChecker.co.uk(/url)

I think what's best in one area, won't necessarily be best in another so a lot depends on where you live.

Not sure if my link will work (I don't usually do links).
  • Well, there'a a surprise!

    Anyway it's www.BroadbandChecker.co.uk

  • Yessssssss!
  • Sorry for hijacking thread to give myself tuition in doing links.
  • It appears there' no such website! Doh!

There's also uswitch which was the original comparative website. Does phones, broadband, utilities and all sorts.

On the phone and broadband front, check:
    connection charge(s)
    guaranteed speed or "upto"
    web space
    number of e-mail addresses
    minimum contract term
    payment methods
    virus/spyware included for 'free'?
    modem included?
cost of calling support line/customer service (is it 0845 or 0870/0871?)
cost of phone calls not in the 'free' bundle
    minimum call fees/capped call costs
download caps (see if you can ask your current provider what your download use is running at)

    etc etc

And always read the small print!!!!

E-mail me if you have any particular questions :o)
  • Telewest here
fab relaible broadbad, phone-and cable if you want
  • Don't worry Benz, Telewest being bought out by NTL will soon turn that into an un-reliable service, with rubbish call centers
  • I've got phone and TV from NTL, which works well but NTL have the worst customer service in the world. Expect to spend hours on the phone trying to get through. My broadband is with Pipex, which seem pretty reliable but I don't pay for it so I've no idea how much it costs.

If you can get all the TV you want with a freeview box then that's a really good option. You can then stick with your BT phone line and choose whichever company you want to provide your phone calls and broadband.
  • with talk talk for phone and broadband - free broadband with the all inclusive phone service.
    sky for tv.
  • This is what to do:

Get a pc with a wifi card, leech onto someone elses connection and surf the web for free!

Download skype and make frre calls to other users and if you want youcan make cheaper call to land lines as well

    Sorted!!
  • Naughty dog..... granted the other day when 3 of us were all using our broadband connection, My sprog logged on to next doors cos it was running quicker !!!
  • yup thats what i do.

I live in a block of flats and i can see 8 connections lol

  • oh forgot to say you can watch tv online as well for free!!
  • One of my sprogs student mates sends print jobs to the network in the next door flat !

The people next door keep arriving home to sheets of paper falling out of the printer saying "Help let me out of here" etc.... They still haven't guessed whats happening after 4 months !

I've got 5 wifi connections around my home - all security enabled - inclduing mine which I can't get onto for some effing stupid reason I can't figure out.............
  • Budda

just do a factory reset on it and re set it up again, takes 2 minutes

  • Why don't people security enable their wifi connections?

nah - I know the reason really - it's called too much steel and concrete between my router (3rd floor) and my laptop (ground floor) - works somedays, others not - seems to depend on which way the wind is blowing..........I reckon one of other wifi connections is line of sight across the road with a good signal............just need to hack the security code now..........
  • lazy, don't know how, don't understand the fun the rest of us can have ???
  • Thanks for the advice - hmm, may try hacking someone elses connection, sounds like a plan to me :-D
