Did my first open water swim after IMA today, felt good to be back in the wetsuit. 4 laps at Liquid Leisure in 1hr2min, not too bad for me. Then 2hr15min cycle in the wind.
Proper training starts tomorrow again.
Must start with swimming coaching again. Anyone know a good coach in Kent?
ok, i need to do more climbing during the coming year i reckon. atm all my bike rides ahve short sharp climbs in them. but no long steady climbs like "the hell" (i think that was the one) and "heartbreak hill".
so, can anyone give me some good steady hills north of reading (ie chilters) to go and swear my way up?
I did a pool swim today, slow and short, followed by a 15min run during which I managed to roll in the mud and now have very attractive knees to match my rather lovely toes!
Thank God, have just found this thread - I was just missing the IMDE training threadies and wondering where to hang out now!! Will trot off and read back.
JD - head towards Henley, then Goring and Streetley - lots of hills!
Iron DTs - where do you live? Come and stay in Plymouth for a long weekend if you like - there's no such thing as a flat easy ride.
Today is my 7th day of not doing anything, so tomorrow I will ride to work and back - hurrah! Marathon training starts too (Cardiff on 15 Oct since I was too slow to get into Abingdon). Otherwise, I'm just continuing with the base training as well.
I found lances training book really good for the bike, lots of bike ponces have also said that they found it good. I think Debbo had a look at it too but not sure if sh found it useful or not. Going long while I'm sure is full of great advice is harder to read than doing a Decca.
Going Long is very tedious and incomprehensible, at least to numpties like me.
Lance's book was good, but I clearly didn't do enough of it, as I was even slower on the bike than DTs, in fact I did the slowest pirate bike split 7.16, but my average HR was ridiculously low so I clearly wasn't trying hard enough.
meldy - i'll try over there. will see if my oxford cycle routes book has any rides going there. think i'll have to drive up there as it's going to take too long to get around reading and i don't want to take chances cycling through reading.
melissa - that 16% downhill from streetly to goring really scares me - no way i'm cycling up it (at least for a while)!
i went swimming for 20 minutes today as my first bit of training since IMDE. spent 5 minutes thinking how strong and well recovered i was. then things went downhill and i died in the water.
JD - once I held up traffic through two whole changes of lights due to my inability to start pedaling from standing up that hill! But it is excellent fun downwards.
lol - i stopped halfway downhill as my breaks were making such a horrendous noise. half thought about walking the rest of the downhill. but then decided that was probably more dangerous in cycling shoes than cycling. so clipped back in and let the breaks squeal away. i think i'll lose a stone before going up it.
Pops, the turbo is great for doing specific strength and z3+z4 sessions (sorry DTs). Doing those on road is very difficult as ;
a) you are going very fast b) things keep getting in the way, light traffic lights and cars c) the cadence is often quite specific (especially when doing strenght work)
Personally I CNBA going out on the road bike for anything less than 1.5 hours, whereas you can do a great turbo workout in that time.
Whats this a ride in Oxfordshire? Im in.. when is it?
One thing a few people said to me in recent weeks was that there werent enough group rides and meet ups, I hardly went to any so am as guilty as anyone. Id like to see more in the coming year.
Remember there is a training ride of the Vitruvian course Saturday 12th August if anyone fancies joining me (2/3 laps)

go out of Wycombe >>> Stokenchurch and head up Dashwood hill ... that should do you for starters!

Lindi - I have great admiration for everyone who did the IMDE swim without a wetsuit. Not sure if I would have made it!
