Marathon PB

Did my first in 1994 (aged 27) (3.56) followed by a bit of a gap to the PB in 2003 (aged 36) (3.16)

However, as my kids get older - they are 8 & 5 - I'd imagine having the time to train for a faster (sub 3) which I'd envisage doing in 4-5 years time, aged mid 40s.
I know what is required and I'll have plenty of marathon experience to draw upon.

I started this thread a couple of years ago in the vain hope that I would find evidence of folk who PB'd in marafun (in advancing years and/or after years of running). Well at last I managed both. I ran Paris yesterday in 3:11 so a PB by 2 mins. Not sure if was the mid life crisis that pushed me on (turned 40 this year) but it felt ok so hoping no to wait another 9 years to PB!!
  • 3:44 at 31 but that was a bad day at the office so I know that I can go alot faster. Would like to break 3 hours some day, maybe in the next year or so, we'll see.

    Well done Tick Tock!

    My PB runs were:
    1994: 3:14 (age 23)
    2002: 3:12 (age 32)
    2004: 3:03 (age 34)
    2004 (autumn): 2:58 (age 35)
    2006: 2:54 (age 36)

Bit of an odd one with such a big gap after 1994 (was busy with kids).  Started again in late 2002 so now been running regularly for nearly 6 years.  So maybe more PBs to go.

  • TickTock,
Superb run in Paris but keep going!!!!!!! You can run faster than you ever thought possible with a combination of hard but "smart" training, the good fortune required to remain injury free and the dedication to run to your maximum ability when the opportunites present themselves.

    FWIW............
    Started running in 1993.
    12 marathons to date.
Year, age (on day of race) and finish time look as follows so far:

    1995 - 26 - 3:54
    1996 - 26 - 3:34
    1997 - 27 - 3:29
    1997 - 28 - 3:27
    1998 - 29 - 3:29
    1999 - 30 - 3:17
    2001 - 31 - 3:09
    2001 - 31 - 3:24
    2003 - 33 - 2:56
    2004 - 34 - 2:52
    2005 - 36 - 2:43
    2008 - 38 - 2:34

I'll be a V40 in July of this year and intend to run all of my lifetime PBs for all distances during the next 5 years.

Some improvement curve Marmite! Just like me you seem to have 'stalled' at circa 3:30 for a few years!

For me.. early years (1994-99) mostly 3:30-ish then..

    age 43.. 3:18 2000
    age 44.. 3:12 2002
    age 45.. 3:10 2003
    age 46.. 3:06 2004
    age 47.. 3:08 2005
    age 48.. 3:07 2006
    age 49.. 3:06 2007
    age 50.. 3:03 2008

I still harbour hope of improving!
  • Started running in 1997 and have done 7 marathons to date.

    Did  between 3:15 to 3:07.

Then reached my 40's and started to take my training more seriously.

    2004  -  2:59  age 42

    2005   -  didn't do a marathon.

    2006  -  2.50  age 44 (pb )

    2007    - injured

    2008    -  Blackpool Marathon  - age 47 ( who knows ? )  Would be happy with a sub 3.

  • Wardi,
Yep, the ~3:30 area was quite "sticky". Definitely hit a plateau for a few years. Looks like you're going well and getting nicely lined up to crack the sub-3 as a V50. Good man!
  • Only just started running mara's last year.

    2008 - 31 - 3:56 (May)
    2008 - 31 - 3:12 (Sept)

wow some massive improvements from mmMarmite and Wardi. Maybe I should start to rekindle the sub 3 dream.
  • Tick Tock

    aged 40 - FLM 2:44:11 (23 years ago)

seem to have some difficulty getting there again.image

As Tom very wisely pointed out earlier it's where you start to draw the graph from .................................

  • I started this thread 3 years ago in the hope there was evidence that would buck the conventional wisdom that in marathon running you impoves for ~4 years then plateau and then decline with age.

Well I thankfully have some emprical results that do buck the trend. I managed to run a new PB aged 41 in my 10th marathon. I ran 3:06 (a 5 min PB). I ran my first mamarthon in 1996 then set a PB in 1999 which I did not beat until 2008 and now have gone quicker. Heres hoping I can go faster next year.

How has this happened? I am probably running slightly more (though not doing any speed work at all!) but I suspect the key difference is that I am much better at pacing myself  - either I am wiser or the credit goes to the garmin!

  • Mark H - when you say you started training "more seriously" could you give a little more detail?  I'd love to know how your training changed in order to make the improvements you made.

     Thanks

  • I will be 31 when i set my marathon PB.

Started running Jan 1986 (age 31) - marathon times since -

    1986  4:14,  1987 3:01,  1988(spring)  2:59,  1988(autumn) 2:53,  1989(spring) 2:48,  1989(autumn) 2:52,  1990(summer) 2:56,  1991 (PB at age 362:46,  1992  2:51,  1993  2:51,  1994  2:49,  1995(spring) 2:53,  1995(autumn)  2:50,  1997 2:53, 1999 2:56,  2000 2:57,  2001  2:57,  2002  2:57,  2004  3:07,  2005 (1:25 half indicated "sub-3 at 50" attempt but left bag with shoes and chip on train at Blackheath so DNS - AArrrgh!!),   lost a bit of focus after that - so - 2006 3:10,  2008  3:15:50 (at age 53).

Injury probs (including knee Op) have hindered me since but have VLM place for 2010, so the aim is to regain my GFA place, which would satisfy me at age 55.

Some of the above posts give me hope, although I agree with Arclight that it is the number of years running that will determine when you set your marathon PB rather than your actual age.

Hi JJ - is that your lifetime PB or age group best? Damn fine time at 65, if I may say so. How many years running?
  • Marathon number 11, aged 42:-  Another year later and another PB (only by 19 seconds) but suspect I can go quicker.

So after worrying that I had seen the last of running PBs in marathons once I turned 40, I have taken 5 mins off and run two PBs in consecutive marathon... bring on middle age is what I say.. life does seem to begin at 40.

  • I'm going to PB in 2 weeks time at the age of 36 (power of positive thinking!)
  • PB was at age 27 2:48:58 (17 years ago).

Hoping to get within touching distance of it again in 3 weeks time and then consign it to the history books next year....... image

  • I'm going to pb next April - aged 42

You heard it here first image

  • I also am going to Pb next April-aged 41.

    image

  • Good luck to the oldies image
  • Marathon 13 yesterday, 15 years after first and now aged 43 - I managed to run 2:59:52.

PB by over 6 mins - I can't wait to turn 44 and go even quicker!

Well done TickTock - we are the same age image

Well i never did pb in April only because i never did a marathon Another time

  • I am 19 and did my first last week, finished in 3,41 wasn't that impressed with my performance however, I think I could do 3.20 if I had proper preparation quite comfortably
  •  My PB was in Washington DC 2004 - 4:!2 age 47.... on current form my sub four  pipedream has gone out the window ......image
  • PB 2.43 AT 46

I will PB again in April age 47!!.
