My comments on Paris were only based on the route looking nice, taking in all the sights. As I said it was all too complicated and expensive to actually do. Hearing from you, LWJ, that the organisation and atmosphere are not the best makes me less disappointed about never having done it.
Do do need a doctors certificate to run any race in France, which is a pain. I was charged £100 for mine.
i got caught by that medical certificate thing once. I was on holiday and saw a HM I fancied. in the end wasnt able to do it.
947242 - I was in the same position when all I wanted to do was a local 5k. They wanted to charge me 30 Euro for local doctor to provide a certificate! I passed and sat on the beach for the day instead
Cinders, yes people do fake their certificates. I still have mine so would tippex out the date, write a current one in then send them a photocopy.
Canute, I didn't think Paris was anything special. There are loads of others in Europe which are better. Paris just got big as people were using that as an alternative to London, that was before Brighton came along.
Marathon running, is a whole other game. My favourites were the rural ones.
The city marathon I found most interesting was Leicester, I'd never been there before and did not know what to expect. Imagine minding your own business on a quiet urban canal bank around the hard time: 20 something miles and a ruddy great Saturn 5 rockets looms up in front of you! Other highlights were the Asian shopping area, the beautiful countryside villages North of Leicester and the finish in a superb Victorian Park.
I had no idea it was there. Just trotting along the canal and there it is, right in front of you... a space rocket in an Eden project style bubble suit. I did have to check with passers by that I wasn't hallucinating. You run right past it, (or you did then?).
The National Space Centre seems to be massively under rated and under marketed. Cinders, if little C likes Space stuff, you should take him.

Wine helps! I saw Mr K on Sunday LWJ - he was using Brighton as part of his training for Comrades!

If I was looking for a romantic venue I'd choose Paris over Brighton.
