Box Hill (183 m / 600 ft) Gibbet Hill (277 m / 909 ft) Leith Hill (299 m / 981 ft, 5 km / 3 miles south of Dorking, the highest hill in Southeast England)
Bear, both those climbs are harder than box hill. Especially the second from dorking. Gibbet has the highest road but it is a busy road and there are no nice routes up it. Also it does not have a decent starting place to climb from, you start quite high.
Guess I'm just thinking in terms of gradient - I guess just sheer length makes it a tough climb as well.
Early days for me on a bike as far as hills are concerned - I'm going to do lots of them as training for Austria. No idea how hilly that is in comparison - will dig out the profile at some point.
Happychap and I are off for a ride tomorrow afternoon up Box Hill if anyone fancies joining us?
It's deceptive, if you just think of gradient then it can be misleading, box hill is only an average of about 5% but the bottom up to the first hairpin is harder than the rest, which is just a gradual drag. Even with a profile it can be hard to tell unless you actually ride it. It always seems to me that you can never really tell how a hill goes until you have gone down it as well.
interestign to hear the perspectives of guys who've been biking longer. Think I'm just going to try riding as many different hills and routes as possible
I'm actually really enjoying the biking - quite surprised )
Thats the best attitude, just get out and do them, any hills will do. Personaly I hate the long draggy 3-5% ones as they are not really 'hills' but the steeper ones like Hard Knott in the lakes (33%) I love the challenge of.
Over Gibbet hill way, the best climb looks to be the A287 from Churt up to Hindhead, 174mts over 4.4kms. Main road though so it's going to be busy. Here
(Don't tell anyone but I'm not enjoying the biking that much. Don't know why... but this year the longer rides just seem to have ground me down worse than longer runs ever have... maybe I've taken on a little too much a little too quickly... ignore me - I'll just go sit in the corner and rust!)
Know what you mean, it's not the speed it's the gettting up that matters.
I know How lane, I was working on the school at the corner this week. Closer to you then may be White Hill lane and Hilltop lane over the back of Chaldon, Linked by this road White hill in particular is excellent, especially if you do it all the way from place farm road. It just gets steeper and steeper and ends with a 20+ % section.
hmm - looked at my A-Z of Surrey and I think one of those bits might be a bridle path (just east of the Brighton road with the hairpin) but there's an alternative route down
I forgot to build in Coldharbour Lane (Leith Hill) as well - that can come on the extended route ;o)

Just found this thread. Usual routes for me are from home in Epsom Downs & anywhere south, usually including Box Hill at some point, which seems to be compulsory!
If hills are friends, you want to be trying the Tour of the Surrey Hills route, which is described (if I've got the hang of setting up links yet) here, and the route is described here
Anyone know the total climb for IM Austria? It doesn't look anything like as bad from what I can see - just two main hills (they've changed the route apparently to 2 x 90km laps)
I'm not going to be able to join you this afternoon but I would be interested in meeting up for some longer ride over the next few months. I live in the Epsom area and I'm also in training for IM Austria next year. I'm only doing 30-40 miles once a week at the moment but most of my rides tend to be around Box Hill.
I can't do this weekend either, possibly not the next one, but the one after that I'll def have something sorted. Which day would people prefer, Sat or Sunday?

I win Bear!
where's Gibbet Hill??

Heres one of my favorites over my way, 175mts over 3kms

This is quite a nice local one - comparatively short but hard work How Lane
I think the challenge is what I like about it too - saying "I beat the hill"

The more the merrier )
including a Box Hill double ascent, and see rather fun descents down Tot Hill (I think) and Lodgebottom Road.
did about 25 of those miles with Happychap, who was excellent company :oD
