anything longer than a marathon is classed as an ultra but to be honest everyone seems to be different as to what they think an ultra is. Personnaly I think they start at the 40-50 mile mark. I won't get out of bed for anything less now days ¦oD
Hi Zilla! I hope things going well there for you and Spans. How about going for the three mountain challenge there in England? Or perhaps you could get qualified for the Boston Marathon? Just a couple ideas for a super athlete like yourself.
aOnly done one 50k, but found it quite hard the pace is much quicker for one thing Zilla go and do the Dartmoor discovery ultra in june next year its "only" 32 miles
Zill you won't have to time to do anything this coming year. Extreme wedding organisation will take over you life. Trust me!!!! Its harder work than an IM!
But if your really after something new I'd try adventure racing!
Off road running and mountain biking is always a laugh....and the map reading means you have a bucket load of excuses....
Plus your missus to be is pretty good at it (adventure racing) thou slightly competitive! ;-)))
'zilla - before you retire from racing - remember we have a 10k battle at Brighton to look forward to........
some good suggestions already but to add my tennpenorth form things I have done.....
skiing/snowboarding - great sports, hard to master (well skiing anyway), hours of fun and a great introduction to big hills.....
trekking - sustained activity (often walking 8hrs a day) and some great trails in the UK and Europe........speak to Minky about El Camino
mountaineering - very tough activity and despite what people think, you don't need to be a rock climber - many peaks are more of a high altitude trek (Kili, Aconcagua, Mt Blanc etc)
adventure sports - tri with attitude!
mountain biking - endless fun and crashes in often superb areas - take them overseas - we have taken ours to Mexico and Peru (did Inca Trail as well) and off to Thailand soon.......
and - what about windsurfing, kiteboarding, land yachting etc.......

Beating Spans in a race
The look on her face...
[I'm going to regret that comment next Tuesday]

but what a 32!!!!!!!!!!!
Like I said, i have only done one
and it was 2.2 mile loops which were flat
your sounds a bit like the dartmoor jobby!
If that doesn't keep you busy enough outside IM stuff, it'll keep you poor enough to stop competing
And nappies. LOADS of nappies. and puke, and 'orrible strained nuclear orange food that gets everywhere.
They tell me the first 20 years are the worst ...

you don't have to run to keep fit and have fun
*ducks*
Best of luck to the two of you, I'd personally set my sights on something totall different like round the world yacht race or take up snow boarding.
Something you can do together, 3-legged race LEJOG?
Personally I'd have to beat the Mrs at all distances, seems she can run and swim faster than you...I just couldn't live with that ;~)
;-)
And I think we are being a bit harsh on ol Zil!
he's pretty good at packing the pies in and drinking beer!
carry on
Apart from that, you were spot on )
