It doesn't matter what we think, she still made a difference in the life of one other human being and I think personally, she should be commended for that. She didn't have to do it. She wanted to do it. His life is not now how it might have been. Yes it's a big problem but big problems require lots of people's help to solve them, not just the cash and help of someone who has more than others.
