    hahahahhahahaha

won't make the cycle cut off!

  • YEAH BUT THE AMMOUNT OF TIME YOU WILL GAIN BEING ABLE SWIM THAT FAST MEANS YOU WILL HAVE EXTRA TIME FOR THE BIKE

  • K9K9 ✭✭✭

well.....I've just ordered a ROAD bike, shooz, and clipless pedals.

If I'm still carp with all of that then I'll find another hobby!!

Will get it on Tuesday and do a long side the following weekend and see...

    I'm soooooooooooooooo excited!!!

your swimming will speed up Silent.

I taught myself crawl 2 years ago when I got shin splints. Could only do very slow breast stroke before that.

I got a good book on technique which helped a lot. I'm sure I'm not built to be a swimmer but getting the technique improved makes quite a big difference i'm told.

Hello Siance. Nice to see you backimage

    What's the dissertation?

    Are you back running?

45 mile cycle for me on Sundayimage and a 4 km swim yesterday. One hour gym bike this morning.

Hi K9. Good effort with the biking! When I used to do winter biking the worst bit was getting numb 'bits'... one cold rainy day I wasn't certain whether I'd had a wee on my bike or not as there was no feeling down there!

Yes I'm back running but haven't gone over 6 miles yet, mainly due to time constraints.

i did crawl when my ITB was at it's worst and I couldn't run at all. The hardest bit is the breathing, plus I had carp goggles that kept filling up. I remember feeling so chuffed being able to do one length! Would like to get back to it when things are less busy.

My dissertation's for the final part of my MSc and it's on delayed-onset muscle soreness. I'm fed up with it to be honest! I'm finding so many jobs to do instead of it, earlier I was scrubbing limescale off our bath rather than go into my office image

  • hello all

first time for me on this thread

i've got achilees insertion point soreness (where it joins healbone, right foot only)) so have decided to stop running till pain free, as i've had it on and off for two years, and i'n very fed up with it. Strangely, the best it's been was doing long slow runs for this years FLM?

Doing all the stretches, but can't seem to really get it better. Just comes back again how ever long i seem to stop for..... argggggggggggg.

still cycling, but i'm a crap swimmer. Must re-learn front crawl, i could swim better before i left junior school than i can now!

I have 3 bikes now.  Basic Trek mountain bike for rough trails, and good fun off-road. A Thorn club tour, touring bike, and a Specialized Sirrus sport for commuting. The Thorn is lovely for fast distance stuff, very comfortable, and the specialized more suited to dashing about around town and road work up to around 20 miles. With rack and mudguards, it makes a good fast commuter, and a joy on the road compared to my Trek tractor.

    need for speed....shhhhh

Silent will have you enrolled for an IM too if you're not careful

  • K9

no no, i'm a swimming brick!  Can't breath, don't seem to float, or get anywhere very fast.  Just flap about with a very poor breaststroke that probably looks like i'm drowning........and i feel like that after about two lenghs?

  • K9K9 ✭✭✭
    you can learn crawl NFSimage
  • You got your new bike yet K9?

  • K9K9 ✭✭✭

    YAY...I do Silent.

    Got it last week!

Took it out on Sunday and did 58.5 miles (I got lost). Much more comfortable than MTB and a fair bit faster despite my caution as it was a bit unfamiliar.

Fell off twice as I'm not used to getting in and out of the pedals yet! Got lots of bruises.

    How's your training going?

  • You have to fall off 5 times before you master the clippy pedals

58.5 miles (thats over half IM distance)

you signed up yet  (only 239 spaces left), get you self signed up but take out the cancelation insurance, that way if you decide you cant do it, you get your money back.

    You know you want to

My training going pretty well, ordered wetsuit, trying open water swimming tonight, have to wait a couple of months for new bike, but still doing loads of miles on MTB, just feel myself geting stronger and quicker, cant wait for road bike with skinny tyres

What sort of bike did you get?

The way I look at it is to entry the event and then thats gives you something to focus your trianing on (works for me)

  • K9K9 ✭✭✭

    Hello Silent.

Have now fallen off 4 times! Once more to go then.

Definitely NOT doing IM next year...far too much work to do on the cycling. Yes, I can manage a reasonable distance, but I'm very slow and not confident. Did another 58 today in much the same time as last week - and I'm knackered! (fell off bike outside the house as I got home)

Will do the Great North Bike ride next week (54 miles). That will be my 7th longish ride. Then hoping to do the Coast to coast cycle next month. Those are my short term goals...then I want to do a HALF IM next year. I totally agree with you about needing a goal...I wouldn't bother doing anything if I wasn't working towards something.

Your training sounds like it's going well. If your doing lots of MTB miles, you will fly when you get your road bike. I'm about 30-35% faster on my road bike and it feels a lot easier. I've got a specialised dolce bike. What are you getting?

Have you got the wetsuit yet? How was the open water swim? I'd love to get going with that. Need a wetsuit first....not sure if they make them to fit my shape though...I've never managed to get one to fit when I've scuba dived. They fit snuggly round my muscley legs and ample bottom but are all baggy round my skinny arms!

  • The wetsuit is coming at the end of month (i.e. payday)

Checked and open water wasn't wetsuit only, there was about 5 of us not in wetties, is was cold but not to cold.

it was really strange as when head was in water could only see black and about 6 inches infront of your face, kept dragging weeds up with my hands and you feel the weeds keep flicking across your face. The course we did was 375mm long and it makes a difference not able able to push off from he side after each 25m, but after saying all that I really enoyed it, only manged 4 laps but will be back next week

Still undecided on which bike to get, am looking for a full carbon bike for just just over £1000, there are a few out there, but will check to see if any on offer when ahve the cask to buy.

Not been out on bike today as OH has nicked my wheels and road tyres ( she has a sprint tri next weekend) so just come back from 15 mile run

  • Had the bone scan last week. The only scary thing  was the six quid it cost to park at the hospital,my local hospital has free parking.I have to go back in a couple of weeks for an Indium scan. They take some blood irradiate the white blood cells inject them back into my arm and I come back the next day for the scan. The information leaflet has a warning in very large, bold type telling me to avoid contact with children under the age of three for four days after the injection.Hope I don,t glow in the dark.

K9, know what you mean about the clipless pedals. I have ordinary pedals with clips on my mtb and  lift my feet back and out.Trouble is my road bike has clipless pedals and I sometimes forget to turn my feet when dismounting,I usually manage to get my feet free when the rest of my body hits the deck.Good luck next week, hope you don,t fall off.

I,m off to Longford to walk the half marathon next week

  • K9K9 ✭✭✭

    Hello Jim,

all those scans and hospital trips - hope they give some useful information. Hospital parking is a disgrace isn't it?

Good luck in the HM - walk wellimage

  • K9K9 ✭✭✭

You swim sounds great Silent...I'm hoping to investigate wetsuits in the next few weeks with one of my friends...then hopefully I'll get the whole weed experience too.

Sounds like your bike will be a flasher variety than mine. I'm sure it'll be worth it!

  • Had a great time in Longford also toured around the west of Ireland while I was there.Have an appointment with the orthopaedic surgeon in two weeks so maybe get a better idea of date for the operation.Beginning to wish I hadn,t put it of for six months now.
  • New hip in 20 weeks, even got to pick the one I wanted [re-surfacing] which allows you to be more active and has a greater range of motion and less chance of dislocation than total hip replacement.

It,s great what you can get on the NHS these days the information booklet says I will be able to ski and I can have sex after six weeks, but I,m not sure if that,s on precription.

  • K9K9 ✭✭✭

    doctors orders Jimimage

counting down the 20 weeks with you

  • Must have slipped through a worm hole, got a letter from hospital today informing me that I,ll be admitted for my op 23d November. Was going to defer my entry for Connemara half but will leave it now and see how I feel nearer the time.

  • K9K9 ✭✭✭

Jim - sooner than you thought then...

a new hip for Christmas. Fantastic.

    Hope you are pleased!

  • Been in for pre-op assessment, blood pressure, ecg, blood samples and swabbed for mrsa,so at least they are making sure you don,t bring it in with you.Had a chat with the doc about op, if bone is too far gone for resurfacing when they open me up they will do total hip replacement. The main dangers associated with the op are infection of the joint or blood clots, both of which I,ve had already. But heyho nothing ventured nothing gained.Should be back home after five days or sooner if they think I,m up to it.
  • Very best wishes for the op Jim image

    keep us posted

  • Bag packed ready to go in this afternoon.Just read local paper hospital has had 20 c.diff related deaths in the first six months of this year.(Unpacks bottled water to make way for bleach.) Here was me thinking my only worry was another anaphylactic reaction in theatre. Will also pack big stick with nail in the end to to keep sick people at bay.
  • Lol Jim!

Don't suppose this oxygen tent will fit in your bag now...

  • It gets better by the minute.Starved since yesterday, had a chat with the anaesthetist and decided because of my past history I would not have a general anaesthetic but have an epidural.Wasn,t to keen on being awake while they drilled and hammered but it was the safest option.Had the local anaesthetic then got the needle into the spine ready to be zapped when the consultant came rushing out of theatre and stopped everything.Seems the centralised steralisation centre had delivered one tray of instruments short. The end result, operation cancelled, sent back to ward with sore back and headache.Got a sandwich and a cup of tea and sent home.Get to do it all again on 17th December.
