During both of the marathons I've done there have been parts where I've thought 'sod it' but you have to get past that. I think I've learned not to count the miles that are left (cos that can be frightening) but just to concentrate on the one I am doing at that time.
SB - Lucozade sport is sooooo fetching all down your vest!
I know when I ran my 1st half I took the advice out of the Marathon Running for Mortals book and broke the race into segments so I wouldn't think oh that's me done a 10K after 6 miles and then be counting the miles!! So I broke it down into 3M targets and it worked!! So I'll try the same strategy with the biggie and hopefully it'll keep the mind positive.
I agree SB that any race is as much mental as it is pyhsical and I found with my half, reading motivational stuff and other advice in the book the night before really helped me get in the right frame of mind for a challenge into the unknown!!!
This will be my 10th marathon, love / hate everyone of them. Vienna in April will be 9. My tummy is my big problem, if it is well.. the run is too.. my tummy cramps.. just hang in and try to finish. I had 22 miles of cramps 2 years ago and swore I would never do it again !! 6 months later I done Lochaber and got a PB by over 45 mins.
I haven't booked anywhere yet, not that organsised this year. I'll have a look at the travel inn site.
I have picked up a bit of a bug, couldn't get out my long run this weekend, headaches and sniffles, so went out 20miles on my bike. Don't the doctors advise keeping warm and drinking plenty fluids
FR, This looks great fun. Too late for this year as I have Vienna end of April then the Devil in June. The guy doing my back up is running the WHW and using my effort as a LSR. It is the unknown for me at the moment, and that frightens me most.
I will def look at this for my spring goal for next year. Maybe manage the beach run with my partner and then the marathon. Must organise it as a holiday and do more than one event anyway.
I'm also doing the Corrie for the 3rd year, it is the best 43 miles I have covered to date. The 17 mile run is like a fun jog with friends. I love my bike so tend to be more competitive in that part.
I am unsure of the Highland Fling but club members done it last year. I'm just a beginner at this :-)
Fairways is too far from the start, I want to be as near as possible. I'm also travelling up with some friends, they've booked a guest house in town (we won't have a car).
The Travelodges are great as long as you've got transport. Saying that Shades, I'm sure there would be plenty people willing to run you in on the morning.
Thank you Roobarb. You are my favourite fruit/vegetable!
I am really looking forward to this now that I've persuaded my friend to run too. She is a marathon virgin, so I shall run round with her and chat and enjoy the scenery!
BHA Bob- I did suggest it. We did both belong to a club last year, but I decamped to the Vegan Runners and she isn't keen enough to go down the track on her own. (and I don't blame her!) If she doesn't get in, we'll probably try for a charity place and raise the money between us.
morticia, as far as I'm aware everyone who entered through the ballot last year got in (at least those who posted on here did). Good luck to her anyway!

I see the Stoneyfield Travelodge is £26 for the Sunday night but £49 for the Saturday - still not as much a bargain as Fairways!

Want to be nearer town for forum social(s) and race start/finish
I've entered this but my friend is unattached and is entering through the ballot. Does anyone know how likely you are to get in that way?
Welcome to the thread!

Just a thought
I've been reading the race ratings, and there's differing views of the size of the hills!!
Shenders' website from 2005 has the course profile in it.
