Sesamoid fracture/Sesamoiditis

Hi. I had a 4 month lay off last year due to what I was told was a sesamoid fracture. I questioned at the time whether it could be sesamoiditis as bipartite sesamoid bones are apparently quite common, but was told that it was most definitely a fracture. The NHS being the NHS they told me I didn't need a cast or crutches, just not to run on it (despite the fact that everytime I walked I rolled through the sesamoid as it's in the ball of the foot).
To cut a long story short, by mid December - 3 1/2 months post diagnosis - it finally felt pain free. I waited until New Years Day to run again (4 months at this stage) to run again. After the first few days the pain started to return. At this stage, my NHS appt for the original fracture arrived, which I kept today (17th of Jan). At the appt, the specialist told me that the problem was still there, and recommended either a cast to immobilise it for 6 to 8 weeks or a steroid injection, which he is saying also involves 6 to 8 week of inactivity.
His preference was the cast (because I think he knows I will probably run before the 6 to 8 weeke), whereas mine is the steroid injection - because I will probably run before the 6 to 8 weeks :-))
Question is, has anybody been through this before, and if so, what's your experience of sesamoid problems, and in particular of the reaction to the steroid injections, i.e. is running a day or two afterwards possible, advisable (presumably not), and does it affect how well the steroids work?

Many thanks.

  • Hi, I have had three years of this - I have been told no fracture but need injection on outside of ball of foot to clear inflammation,

I'm training for London having pulled out last 2 years, pain not too bad but longest run only 6 miles so far

I am due for a injection 5th March but not aware of 8 week lay off, can this be right - if so Boll$% I'm not missing the race - it will have to wait

Ta Gas Ed. I can run through it generally, but I know that that's not a good idea. I'm due for my injection 6th Feb and am planning on running Wokingham Half on the 11th, unless somebody tells me it's a very very bad idea........
Everything I read seems to point to ridiculous recovery times for these injuries, which you already seem to be aware of. Hope it works out for you.
  • Thanks Tipp Topp, touch wood for you too
