This thread has reminded me of that you tube video where the scouse lad repeatedly threatens the little tubby man at his door until mild mannered man decks him with a single blow and he crawls away...
As a "bookworm" i hope you have at least heard of it?
Those who use this the word Chav, like to say that its not just the white working class, on council estates, its anyone who is a, b, or c. If only that was true. Its a self-hating, class-ridden, devisive, odious little word. Not worthy of anyone who claims to be respectful of others, and intollerant of bad behaviour.
Yes ladies and gentlemen my left/liberal wings are out
I expect most regions have their claims to the word. I was under the impression it originated from Chatham.
I can't imagine anyone here has done a comprehensive nationwide survey, so I guess this will just be a list of places near where people live, that they like to look down on.
I see where Stephen is coming from, and I have the book "Chavs" at home waiting to be read, but I've always associated the term not with the working class but with the badly-behaved and antisocial element within the lower social order. Or whatever you want to call the less well-off, deprived, etc. From all accounts it's a thought-provoking book and it's next on my list.
I thought we were voting on where we were most likely to see a group of lads donutting a ford escort in a car park, wearing Burberry caps, whilst their girlfriends called Chardonnay and Tracey drink chilled Blue Nun from the bottle......
Clacton on Sea, I was their last week visiting friends when i saw a man wearing a t-shirt saying 'KEEP CALM....AND PLAY WITH MY BALLS. I just stared in amazement as he walked hand in hand with his girlfriend into the amusment arcade.

And Stephen raises an interesting paradox - in recognising poor manners and lack of respect, are you demonstrating poor manners and lack of respect?
