Sounds like you are coming back strong TD- you'll soon be passing us old knackers again.

MM- sorry I've been away and missed although the stuff about your scare. I was shocked for a moment- misread your post and thought the doc had prescribed  you beta b*llocks'.

Must say I doubted Murray but he certainly delivered today.

I think I spend more nervous energy watching the Olympics than I ever do when I'm running!

Is ATM knitting us wedding outfits?

    Mary!!  Helloooooo!!

Kaz - they are very welcome to join my entourage, but I take no responsibility for the outcome after they have spent 4 hours with my brother....

Iain - don't worry, the minute I went to Poland last year they shut up shop and moved the thread...

  • An interesting selection of footwear and running styles from the eventual first, third and fourth placed runners this morning.

Hi Mary - I met a lovely man from New York this morning who said I must go across the pond and run the NY marathon. Maybe one day.

  • Yer_Maj - Thank you very much. It would be very much appreciated and I am sure that your brother can't make them any worse than at present!!image

Kaz - yay for the Positive Mental Attitude. Go for it girl. We're right behind you.

Eggy - when's the stag do?

TD - it's the midichlorians. The Force is strong in you. Result! Great job Neil for getting him out there and competing with him at talking - did you hold your own? image

  • Congratulations eggy and ATM's daughter! I wonder if she knows yet....

Question. Why is it 1500m and not the full mile?
  • ATMATM ✭✭✭

Welcome back, Mary image  Are you going to run Chicago, this year? ' Our' Eggy is heading your way....More to the point, are you coming back to Paris?

Hmmmm, Master Maj has decided that he wants to come too.  Suddenly.

HS - The IOC is French. They don't do miles in metricland.

  • I know but the track is 400m so why not do 4 laps, why 3 and a bit? Am I being a bit thick again?

Ooh a teenage outing to Paris! I bet they have more fun than anyone.
  • Eggyh73Eggyh73 ✭✭✭

Not thick, just one of those daft political things. Metric vs imperial measurements. Since the IOC is French they went with metric and everyone followed suit as the Olympics became the main focus for athletics.

Back in ye olden days it was common to have one mile track races in the UK and the USA.

  • Yer_maj - I hope thats not my doing.....sorry?? image

HS-mmmmmmm....I hope not!!!! image Mind you the girlz are  planning like mad......even planning on getting me in a bikini????image Aquaboulevard will never be the same again. To hear them you wouldn't think its 8 months away!!!

Truth be told  I can't wait either!!! image

  • Did anyone see the first heat for the men's 1500m just now - they were ALL wearing the same yellow trainers. What are they?

Orbutt: you know TD too wellimage

Yer maj and Kaz LOL. What can go wrong in a little under 4 hours (that should be 3.30 I think Kaz)?image
  • NB - Nae chance.

What about flourescent trainers for Paris too????image

  • yer majyer maj ✭✭✭

    Neil....you've met my brother, right?

I generally leave my son in charge.

  • Holy Moly...!     That 100m mens final was superb!!   image

  • It's pitch black outside but I feel like getting my trainers on a going for a wee sprint. Bolt showed the world that he is easily the best.
  • Changed my mind and had a beer instead. With all the Olympic excitement I forgot to say merci yer-maj for this wonderful new site. Page 3 already. Should I take my top off?

Wow - just watched the marathon tape - amazing!

And a new shiny thread - I feel spoilt.
  • Interesting result from yesterday's barefoot run...   on my usual morning run today the soleus muscles on both legs were definitely feeling tired.  This is good.  Just what I wanted.  Will do more barefoot running this evening....

  • Yer Maj, I think I might have met your brother, but it was your amazingly positive sister in law (George?) who left the biggest impression...

DV: take it really carefully with the bare foot stuff...! When I told my running partner I had bought some Vibrams his response was " will welcome you to the foot injury club in a few weeks then"... (he suffers with plantar fasciitis) and everything I've read suggests that a very very careful approach is needed...

100m last night was great. Bolt was in a league of his own. His heat... where he looked around, saw he was easily in the lead, eased off and jogged over the line,,, in 9.82! Wow.

  • Another morning of fogimage Flourescents on and 10k done.

100m amazing last night. I can't believe my 10 yr old was sitting discussing their knee lift with me at 11pm, She is so impressed its a pleasure to watch her as wellimage I think she is being inspired!!!image

  • Neil...  thanks...  I did 2 x 10 minutes yesterday..   and was intending on doing this every day for a week to see how I get on.   What is your experience of this and did you develop any new injuries..?   I'm not planning on actually being a barefoot runner, just integrating it into my training as a way of strengthening my feet and lower legs.

  • Hi DV,

I haven't done much with my vibrams yet: I only got them 2 weeks ago, and so far have used them twice, to run with my 3yr old daughter. We do about 500m each time, very slowly image

You're much more experienced than me. I just thought that doing it every day might be a bit of a shock to the system and don't want to see you get hurt.

I think Dannirr might be another barefoot specialist?

  • Eggyh73Eggyh73 ✭✭✭

Dannirr ran Paris in his Vilbrams. I know he is very positive about using them.

  • Morning all. Hey there Mary on the other side of the pond!

Orbutt - Midichlorians?! Is that something well dodgy from Scientology. I don't go anywhere near that penicious crowd thank you very much. Would hate to end up married to Tom Cruise. Or be part of anything they do.

Eggy - me having a hareem because I am a faster runner? Quite the opposte my friend. Have to be fast to keep ahead of them. Am a one-woman-man. image And before Leeds Rob chips in, I don't mean one at a time. Congrats on being offered the gift of ATM's daughter. Am sure she's gorgeous like her mother.

DV - I tried barefoot running one day about three years ago. Did 10K on grass. The tear that developed in the Soleus was excruciating and needed about 4 weeks for the pain to go away. Probably too much in one go. It was lovely running on grass but was always worried about treading on something dangerous. My feeling is that by running in a variety of different shoes, you get a more diffuse build up of muscle, rather than your legs just getting used to how one particular pair or style of shoe works. I personally think barefoot is too risky, for benefits which are very difficult to establish. My advice would be a gentle upwards slope. Muscle tears tend to be traumatic (as in sudden), so quite hard to detect the warning that it is due.

HS - 1.500m rather than a mile.... well not only is a mile a weird imperial measurement, but the 1.500m is exactly half of the other popular middle distance event, the 3.000 metres. From a metric perspective, that is much more sensible than 1.600 metres.

Did anyone else notice that neither Bolt or Blake turned round to pay a moment's attention to their injured countryman in last night's 100m final? Everyone else came in under 10s except Asafa Powell. Not once did they turn round to see how he was. Having seen so much team spirit in the last week, I was really struck by the individualism of the sprinters and after 5 mins of watching the build up and a couple of the mins of the race and celebrations afterwards, I'd had enough of their egotism. Still admire their stunning speed but not interested in the rest of the show.

After yesterday's much longer run than I have been used to of late, I woke up with a good deal of morning stiffness today. I also noticed that my ankles, achilles and knees were a bit sore.

    Very impressive TD..   image

The barefoot running is apparently going to strenthen the arches on my feet and lift them.   I use the orthotics to correct my arches that collapse when I run.  Its got to be worth a try...   I want to find a way to run without using orthotics.   That is the objective.

  • As I was reading thought I'd offer to teensit for Kaz during Paris...but the Maj's have it.image  I think it'll make Kaz run faster to get her innocent wee scottish isle girls away from the welsh as soon as possible image

TD - YUP, the sprinters are a very different breed.  It's all about themselves and psyching out the competition to make a mistake.

ATM - can we be bridesmaids?  I love a bit of bridesmaiding!  All the fun, don't have to decide what to wear (can blame the bride if it's crap), get in all the photos and don't have to deal with that whole groom thing for the rest of our lives. Sorted!
