  • Dannirr...   have a think about this little idea...   it could be a good laugh...

London to Brighton car rally, November 2012.   I'll race you.    You in your vintage car vs me running.   Loser buys the ice-creams!    We'll need to work out how long you think it'll take you and how long I think it'll take me.   You'll need to give me a head start but we'll time it so that we should aim arrive on Brighton sea front at the same time.   I'll wear my Spot Tracker, so you, and the forum, can be assured of no cheating and that I haven't run across London to Victoria station and jumped on the train.

What do you think...?    It'll be great fun...  image

My kids would like a ride in your car at some stage...!

ps..   I'll have a flake with my ice-cream!

  • Neil, US gallon is 17% less than an Imperial gallon.

Those consumption numbers are outstanding! I have never heard of such numbers - even the hybrids don't do that.

Hybrid cars aren't designed to be more efficient on long journeys. Diesel will ALWAYS win that fight because of the higher energy density per litre than petroleum. Hybrids will usually win out where there is lots of braking involved as they are able to recycle the kinetic energy. That process does not happen when you've got the cruise control on, so no energy recycling benefit.

One of the Toyota Prius variants has a photo-voltaic roof, but even this doesn't contribute directly towards motion as the energy is used to power secondary electrical systems like aircon. And the later Minis do have a wonderful diesel engine, although the earlier ones had relatively poor engines supplied by Toyota and then Peugeot. Anyone want to guess what industry I used to work in?

  • Dannirr - Baker's Cist, bursae, I don't know? But here's a couple of pics.

The shaded light blue area shows where the swelling is on the posterior of the knee. It starts from the centre and moves downwards and out to the medial side. It's not very pronounced at the moment. It doesn't hurt to press it but it is very hard.

This shows the maximum knee flexion before it starts to hurt. With the other leg I have not problem for the heel to come up to the butt.

Mrs O and I have Mini Steroid - otherwise known as the Countryman - and we love it. Normal mpg for commuting and everyday driving is 41mpg calculated full tank to full tank,

  • TD: I read up on baker's cyst today after your earlier post and it does look like that. The only thing I couldn't find any reference to was the way it vanished after running. I'll be interested to hear what our resident doctors think
  • mini MPG and TDs legs.  It's a good night on the forum!  My first car was a 1952 morris minor.  She was yellow and called murtle.  Then I got (dad got me) a morris 1000.  He was green and called toad. image mpg...no idea, but toad almost got up to 65 miles per/hr going down hill with the wind behind him.

DV & Dannirr - RACE!!!!!  Dannirr, watch out for sabotage from DV jnrs though, if you let them in the car.  Like pub stops etc.

  • DannirrDannirr ✭✭✭

TD - yes, that does look like a Baker;s cyst from the position. Funny - would not have thought that related to your previous issues, and like Neil, I didn't think they would spontaneously appear and disappear.  Got yourself a sharp needle?

DV - you might have me talked into a diesel Mini for myself now!  My diesel truck (F350) is horrible on gas consumption but of course, it's pretty huge.  Thse numbers are impressive. As for nitrogen - new cars in the US come with that standard now - which is a pain as filling is an issue  - so I just top up with air.

London to Brighton race?  Now we're talking! I'll be driving my 1902 Delahaye - a lovely French lass with a body to die for. My consumption will likely be about 10 mpg - and it will take me a while to get to Brighton.  I will start around 7.30 am from Hyde Park and expect (Ok, hope) to arrive on the pier around 2.30 pm (cutoff time is 4.30 pm).  I think your idea of a race is fabulous - you're on!  I don't think you'll need much, or any, start given my speed. Your kids are welcome to a ride - we'll be on Regent Street all day Saturday Nov 3rd.  In fact, any and all from this wonderful thread are welcome to "party" at my car on Saturday.

I smell a thread reunion coming on....

  • Its my 33rd birday on the 2nd

  • Dannirr..  top man!     I'll be doing London - Newhaven in a few weeks time.  First time will be on my bike as a reccy to see if its runnable...  and then I'll run it once I've sorted a safe run route.  This is the route I'll take for the Paris run in April.   Looking at your London - Brighton route it is very similar down to Crawley after which I will detour off to Newhaven.   I'll try to stick to the same route as you as much as possible unless there are safety issues or other restrictions.   It'll be fun, especially if we catch each other up on the way down.

Once I've done the Newhaven run that'll give me a good idea of how long I'll need and we can work back from there for start times.  It's got to be fun, so if you were thinking of stopping for lunch on the way then still factor that in to your times.  I don't want to change your plans.

It'll be a good laugh...   and we need someone on the forum to update us both on progress in real time...  I'll have a GPS tracker which will show my precise position and it normally updates every 15 minutes.   Is there a way for your location/progress to be known in real time..?   At the very least, maybe we can have someone you can phone en-route at regular intervals..?   Or at least when you reach the various refreshment stops.

We'll definitely be there to see you on Saturday 3rd   image

  • Changing the subject to shoe porn...     I've ordered the Hoka Bondi B..    its a major issue for me...  first proper shoe change since 2005.   Delivery will be sometime after 15th August.   At £130, its not cheap....   but...  I've spoken to enough ultra runners in the last week or so who are very pleased with Hoka...  so..  in my efforts to get rid of the orthotics I'm going to give them a go.   many runners at Badwater last month ran in Hoka....   hopefully they will work for me.

My 2 x 10 minute barefoot sessions are going well....    well, apart from running through dog poo tonight...  yuk....   image    that wasn't such a nice experience.   Apart from that, I'm enjoying it.

  • I thought this was Runner's World?!

    Ha, joking.

Neil - amazing story. Have you a photo of the Corvette? I'd love to see it.

The new Mini - I'm sorry but I agree. It's a bit of a girl's car. But my car has a girl's name, I live it and so who cares?

Just watching Inglorious Basterds (sorry, taking a break from Olympic viewing post-running club tonight). Michael Fassbender is incredible - it's an amazing and grotesque movie. Some of the scenes are unbelievable, the movie itself doesn't really add up though...

  • Mercy, there's a lot of flesh and cars on here tonight image . Anyone want to buy a low-mileage BMW 1 series diesel? Since moving darn sarf I hardly ever use it - literally haven't taken on fuel since September. Can't quite get my head round advertising it for sale - I think it's because I've always had a car since I was 20 and my brain isn't ready to be a pedestrian yet.

The race sounds fun. Not sure about the ice cream on November though DV - sure you wouldn't rather have a hot chocolate? You could still have a flake. And you have just described in one sentence why barefoot running doesn't appeal image
  • Dannirr - meant to say: what a beauty!

DV - I'll use a GPS tracker too - I have one I usually use on long distance balloon flights.   We dont usually stop for lunch - I did the first time and then almost missed the cutoff time as I also had a breakdown that took me an hour to fix.  So now, aside from the mandatory stop in Crawley for doughnuts and a time check, we drive and only stop for petrol or mechanical issues. Oh, and the occasional "beverage".

  • 'I'll use the tracker I use for long distance balloon flights' image . That is the coolest throwaway line I've ever heard! You don't have a submarine as well, do you, or a space rocket?

I saw a bit in the news this morning about the Speed of Light run in Edinburgh this weekend, it looks very cool.

  • Dannirr: that Delahaye is beautiful. I love the running boards/ mudguards or whatever they are called. I know I could probably work it out from the times but it's easier to ask - what will your average speed be for the L-B run? I love the idea of this race, well done DV and Dannirr! And on DLR's 21st birthday as well!

Iain here's a picture as requested

  • Running Rodent - the 1-Series BMW shares the same diesel engine as the Mini - do you have the 1.6 or the 2.0L variant? Not that a RH drive BMW would be much use to me here in Belgium.

Dannirr/ DV - I suspect another possible vector on your car vs man race is possible. How about someone cycles from Brighton Pavilion to Regent's Park in London and then returns back to Brighton again. About the equivalent of a Tour de France stage. I could possibly be tempted into doing such a feat. This is on 4th Nov, yes?

Only had time for a quick km in the pool this morning. Thought I'd arrive at work sharp and fresh. All I feel is tired and in need of intravenous espresso. Can't be a good thing. Not sure I like the idea of stick a sharp needle in my leg Dannirr...

Anyone heard anything from Princess Fiona or NGUG recently? I'm conscious I haven't seen or heard from either of them in a while and i miss them.

  • Correction from me on BBC coverage, I spoke too soon.  Taekwondo is on BBC1 right now!  Get watching NB.

TD - That bike challenge interests me...bikes start in Brighton going to London and back while DV and Dannirr make their way down...bigice cream party (in november, brilliant!) on the beach at the end.  What's the average time for London to Brighton cycle?  Think we'd have to do it on touring or mountain bikes to make it equitable.

and on that running thing some of us do occassionally.  I had a really bad one this morning image Took mon-wed as rest days as felt exhausted after wknd but had to get out today and it sucked.  VERY heavy legs, felt like no energy was going to them at all and my head was the same.  Feeling a bit better now though...hopefully wee 4miles has flushed a bit of whatever it is out. image

  • I contacted the organisers of the London - Brighton car rally this morning to advise them of what we are going to do and I got a very enthusiastic reply back...    they are going to give me a special access pass so that I can get into the restricted areas   image

Love the idea of including a bike race too...   you'll need to sort out real-time GPS trackers so that we know where you are!

I have nominated ATM to act as the communication centre to keep everyone advised of GPS locations etc.....

  • Neil.. car porn!   That looks stunning...  love the colour!

  • TD: True. And we haven't heard from KO'S for a bit either. I was starting to worry about DLR too (well more than usual) but it turns out his "holiday" was, liked a proper one.

My dream car would be a Karmann Ghia. Black with tan interior.

Or a Porsche 911 classic from late 1960s.
  • So should we make a list (as the list fairy is one of them) of MIAs and start speculating about what they're up to?  So far there's Princess Fiona, NGUG and KO...

  • Audrey: almost certainly fallen madly in love with a very rich Sheikh who has whisked her away to a deserted island where she is living in the lap of luxury, dripping with diamonds, waited upon by trained grape-peelers, palm wavers and sequined camels.
  • Exchanged something with KOs on FB yesterday. She's been in the states for a while and think she could possibly be in Italy right now. Mausey - I hope the relative lack of success from the Ozzies compared to your superior and probably arrogant Pommie associates here at RWUK, isn't putting you off visitng.

the olympics gets a lot less interesting when your country stops winning things.

RR - no submarine....yetimage. But you have to enjoy life - and I try do so with as little electronics as possible. Run. Fly. Drive. Family. Food. And the other thing.

DV - great! Did you speak with someone at the VCC (Veteran Car Club) or the production company they use to stage the event? You do realise of course, that you have to do the run in period clothing? ( shoes excepted, although barefoot would work image)

TD and RS - please join us on bikes - I did chat to a girl on a bike riding next to me for about 15 miles last year - great fun. I would suggest leaving out the Brighton to London bit - although only 60 miles from London to Brighton , there is much traffic and it will not be fast. Incidentally, on Saturday 3rd there is the Future Car Challenge - to compliment our run - from Brighton to London. Period clothing and a Penny Farthing?

If TD and RS you decide to do it (period clothing not really required), I can get you passes as they provide me with more than I can use.

Neil - I average about 10 mph overall. But that's about 3 mph on the uphills included! This will be the first time in the Delahaye - last two times I drove a Curved Dash Oldsmobile.

Just in case anyone wants to see our pictures or video clips from our first time, please go to our website at http://www.dansuskin.com/danni/London_to_Brighton_2010.html

  • Neil - wow. Just wow.

    Did practicality dictate the sale?
