Probably depends on what part of the country you live in. Round here in hertforshire, then if it's dry anything goes, so VFF treks are quite nice, if it's not dry then you need a bit of proper grip on the wet clay. Vivobarefoot neo trails and breatho trails work if it's slightly grotty, xtalon 190s work great in pretty much anything (and i'm guessing also baregrip 200s). Merrel trail gloves were a bit of a dissapointment, but I think i've got ones which are a bit too small so can't really comment. If you live somewhere stony then I haven't a clue. Maybe one of the new inov-8 trail-rocs might be worth a punt.
George: your optimum choice will depend on your foot shape as well as trail type, because some of the shoes are narrower, some wider.
VivoBarefoot Neo Trail took me through NDW50 both on the day (quite dry) and on very wet & muddy recce days. I am however thinking about getting a pair of those new Inov8 Trailroc 235s ready for Lakeland 50 next year, assuming they fit my feet.
A vote for the New Balance MT110's from me. Looking forward to the MT1010's too. Have the Inov8 x-talon 190's awesome too. Not tried anything more extreme but am very tempted with a pair of Luna Sandals.

I have a pair of Luna Sandals Leadville trail sandals with ats laces. Great for trails etc
Vivobarefoot Breatho Trails for me - tried VFFs as well, and found them a bit... wierd.
What are your local trails like George........
New Balance MT10s are the best trainers I have owned, and I've owned a lot. They saw me through a flooded Hadrians Wall run with no issues.

I really like the lok of the MT1010s for longer distnace trail stuff, do you know when they're out over here Alistair?
cheers for the responses. Near me there is a dusty path and also wood routes which are often more muddy than stoney.
